She has twice been awarded the Quill and Trowel Award by The Garden Writers of America. • Chase Community Giving – The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts

Chase Community Giving is giving away $5 million, and you can help decide which 200 local charities receive donations.  The winning charity will receive $250,000, four runners-up receive $100,000 each, and 195 others will receive $20,000.  One of the not for profit organizations in contention is the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc. Voting ends July 12, and winners will be announced July 13.    Access voting on Facebook at http://apps.facebook.com/chasecommunitygiving/

The first Chase Community Giving program, held earlier this year, was the most popular corporate philanthropy “crowdsourcing ” campaign of its type. More than 2 million users on the Facebook platform became fans of the program and helped decide which of more than 500,000 charities should receive a share of $5 million. More than 100 winners from 31 states were selected. Chase Community Giving is back again – and improved. The number of charities eligible to receive awards has doubled and several new tools have been introduced.

Once on the Chase Community Giving Page, search “Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts” and five organizations will come up, with addresses in Sudbury, West Roxbury, Taunton, and Ipswich, as well as the main umbrella organization located in Wellesley Hills.   There is no cost involved in voting, and as a member of The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, the Garden Club of the Back Bay hopes to do its part and spread the word.  Unfortunately, the Federation’s own web site has no information on the contest, but you heard it here first!

  • Garden Club of the Back Bay Donates $2,500 to Esplanade Emergency Tree Fund

As most of you are aware, more than 50 of the Esplanade’s specimen trees were damaged or destroyed as a result of a violent storm that passed through Boston on June 6.  Willows, the iconic trees of the Esplanade, were particularly hard hit when they were uprooted and damaged beyond repair by what has been identified as a macroburst (although weather groupies say the more proper term is “microburst”).  Our Club Co-President Jackie Blombach says her dog Lily’s favorite apple tree is gone as well.  In response to the extensive damage sustained by the storm, The Esplanade Association’s Board of Directors has created the Esplanade Emergency Tree Fund to raise money to replace trees that have been destroyed.  The Garden Club of the Back Bay has sent $2,500 to this Fund, and we thank all who attended or supported our most recent fund raising event, The Twilight Garden Party, and all our loyal wreath buyers, without whom our ability to step forward in such emergencies would be impossible.

The destruction of so many historic and stately trees is a terrible loss to the park and to all who enjoy this special green space.  The Department of Conservation and Recreation has reported more than 50 trees will either need to be removed or severely pruned.  The DCR commenced a tree clean-up operation immediately after the storm to assure that public safety concerns were fully addressed.  The Esplanade Association will work with the DCR to inventory the trees and assess the full damage to the park at the earliest possible time.  That inventory is funded in part through grants from The Garden Club of the Back Bay.

You may contribute to this fund – donations of all sizes are urgently needed and will be tax-deductible – by logging on to www.esplanadeassociation.org, or by contacting Justin Burke at 617-227-0365, or by emailing him at jburke@esplanadeassociation.org.  If you are a GCBB member, please let him know.

  • Elimination of the Mounted Unit of the Park Rangers

The following  letter has been received by The Garden Club of the Back Bay from Michele Hanss, Chairman of The Boston Committee:

It has come to our attention that the Mounted Unit of the Park Rangers for the City of Boston may be eliminated later this month on June 30th due to cuts in the Parks and Recreation budget. This poses serious consequences primarily affecting the safety of the parks by sharply decreasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the Park Rangers. A number of park related non-profits such as the Friends of Jamaica Pond, Franklin Park Coalition, and the Emerald Necklace Conservancy are working hard to influence the outcome of this and our support is needed right now.

Monies are being raised privately through several sources and you can help by sending contributions to:

    The Emerald Necklace Conservancy
    891 Centre Street
    Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts 02130

Please include in the memo section of your check: horses. If, despite all this effort, the unit does not survive these tough financial times, the checks will be returned. If you have any questions concerning this please e-mail Julia Owens at jowens@ridgewayadvisors.com since she is handling all requests for information.

Thank you for your consideration in supporting our park lands.
