Saturday and Sunday, July 30 and 31, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Cape Cod Bonsai Display and Demonstration

The Cape Cod Bonsai Club will bring a variety of bonsai trees for display throughout the Highfield Hall and Gardens mansion over the weekend of July 30 and 31. Members will be present to answer questions about this time-honored tradition. On Sunday, July 31, at 11:00 am, club members Charles Orr and Andy Arnault will host a demonstration, which is included in the price of your admission. For twenty five years, the club has pursued the historical, aesthetic and horticultural aspects of this art from and helped advanced the education and enjoyment of the art of Bonsai through meetings, exhibits and publications. Tuesday, May 17, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm – Garden Day at Show House

Expert horticulturalists will present throughout the day On Tuesday, May 17 under a lovely white tent. Tea and treats will be available for purchase. Your $35 ticket includes one time entrance to Decorators’ Show House 2016 at the 1854 Greek Revival Nathaniel Allen House in West Newton and access to all Garden Day presentations. Lucinda started her floral design and arranging career in 2000 after twenty years in senior financial management. She is a Senior Associate at the MFA and belongs to the Junior League and Milton Garden clubs. She does flower arranging demonstrations as well as events, weddings and funeral flowers for people who are connected to her business by word of mouth. Her arrangements have graced Green Sales, Annual Forbes House tour, galas, openings, Show Houses and St. Michael’s Flower Guild.

Glen Lord, Horticulturist and Bonsai Expert

Glen Lord is an avid bonsai artist with over 15 years in the art form. He spent seven years teaching and making bonsai at Bonsai West, the oldest bonsai nursery in the Northeast. He is also the bonsai specialist for the Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection that is housed at The Arnold Arboretum. Bonsai is the ancient Japanese method of growing and caring for a tree whose growth is restricted by the size of the shallow pot in which it is planted and by the pruning of its branches and roots. In this presentation Glen Lord, who consults for the Arnold Arboretum’s bonsai (Japanese) and penjing (Chinese) collection of dwarf potted plants, will speak first about the history of bonsai. He will then demonstrate the methods employed in creating and caring for a bonsai.

Christine Paxhia is a life long gardener who turned her passion into a garden design and coaching business. After 30 years in corporate America, she became a Principal Master Gardener. She spends much of her time designing garden beds, and redesigning landscapes that have become old and overgrown. Her specialties are shade gardens, sun gardens and planters.
On Garden Day, she will talk you through a few basic principals of designing and planting a garden bed for the shade and for the sun. She will discuss how to determine the site, preparing the site, soil and plant selection.
Christine will do a planter demonstration with seasonal plants.

Watch Michael Levin create a finished specimen bonsai from raw nursery stock while sharing his tips on sculpting, pruning, wiring, repotting and more. This Saturday, August 1 class will take place at Tower Hill Botanic Garden. Learn about bonsai care and maintenance from A to Z, with plenty of time for Q & A. Berkshire Botanical Garden in Stockbridge offers a Bonsai Workshop on Saturday, March 14 from 10 – noon.  Learn about bonsai, the ancient Japanese method of growing, pruning and caring for a miniature tree in a small pot. Bonsai is a rewarding blend of science and art, and this workshop will help students find the right path to enjoying this horticultural pursuit. They will learn the history, methods and tools used in bonsai, with a focus on basic pruning, styling, potting and aftercare for a tropical bonsai. Using your newly minted skills, practice with your own tree to begin a bonsai collection. Instruction, bonsai plant, tools, soil and pot are all included in the cost of this class. Instructor Glen Lord is a long-time grower of bonsai. He is an authority on bonsai and was the assistant nursery manager at Bonsai West, an east coast specialty bonsai nursery. Join Bonsai expert Glen Lord at Berkshire Botanical Garden in Stockbridge on Saturday, January 31 from 10 – noon for an informative talk and live demonstration on successfully growing bonsai in a home setting. Many beginners focus on the wonderful art form of bonsai, but to achieve success, the first skills to learn are good growing techniques. Topics for discussion will include selection of the proper plant for your location, soils, light and food. Abundant information will be available for both the beginner and the seasoned hobbyist. Glen will showcase some of his phenomenal Bonsai as demonstrations.

Monday, March 10, 12:00 noon – Bonsai

Come to the Bourne United Methodist Church on Sandwich Road in Bourne on Monday, March 10 at noon and meet Les Lutz, new director of horticulture at Heritage Museum and Gardens. He will use a PowerPoint presentation to introduce us to bonsai, followed by a demonstration of how to start with nursery stock and end up with a beginning bonsai specimen. The free program is sponsored by the Aptucxet Garden Club.

Saturday, February 1, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Botany in Art: A Botanical Tour of the Worcester Art Museum

Judith Sumner, Ph.D, botanist, author, and past Garden Club of the Back Bay speaker, will conduct a Tower Hill Botanical Garden tour entitled Botany in Art: A Botanical Tour of the Worcester Art Museum, on Saturday, February 1, from 10 – 12. Meet at the Worcester Art Museum for a gallery tour with a different twist. Explore the collection for botanical images, from the bonsai and lingzhi fungus of the Chinese jade collection to the stylized fruit depicted in the highly regarded Antioch mosaics. Paintings also reveal subtle botanical symbolism, such as the wildflowers that appear in the Renaissance religious art. Investigate floral paintings and tulipomania, idealized landscapes of the 19th century, and John Singer Sargent’s painting of Lady Warwick ( a Socialist who later abandoned society and founded a women’s horticultural college).   Co-sponsored with New England Wild Flower Society. $24 for members of THBG or NEWFS, $29 for non members.  Register by clicking here.

The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University presents Bonsai Matching with Arboretum Docent Robbie Apfel on Sunday, October 20 from 2 – 3:30 pm at the Hunnewell Building of the Arboretum. Most of the species seen as bonsai in the Arboretum’s Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection can also be found in the landscape. Explore the history and culture of bonsai and the Arboretum’s relationship with these plants, and compare bonsai with their “unrestricted” counterparts in the landscape.  This activity is free. Saturday, September 28, 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm – The Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection: Celebrating 100 Years

Enjoy an afternoon of history and horticulture with Peter Del Tredici on Saturday, September 28, from 1 – 3:30, as he speaks in depth about the Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection. Imported to the United States in 1913 and donated in 1937 to the Arnold Arboretum, the core of this collection consists of seven large specimens of compact hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Chabo-hiba’)—each between 150 and 275 years old—that the Honorable Larz Anderson purchased from the Yokohama Nursery Company. Additional Anderson bonsai were donated in 1949 and the collection has expanded to include some younger plants. Peter will speak about the history and significance of this unique collection; give a detailed tour, and discuss the care regimen for these plants to ensure their continued health.
