Sunday, June 12, 11:30 am – 3:30 pm – Dover Library House and Garden Tour

The Friends of the Dover Library are pleased to announce the Dover Library House Tour will be held on Sunday, June 12th, from 11:30 – 3:30 pm. Several exciting changes have been made to this popular event in order to offer patrons something different each year. This year, the Tour moves to the Spring to become the Dover Library House and Garden Tour. In addition to presenting three of Dover’s finest homes, the tour will now showcase three of Dover’s most distinguished private gardens. There are six separate venues in all.

Two of the homes are beautiful antique farmhouses which celebrate Dover’s rich agricultural past. Indeed, one of the properties dates back to the town’s earliest settlements of 1640. The third home is a newly-constructed contemporary shingle-style house with grand living spaces.

At each house, guests will sample gourmet fare from Dessert Works, Dover Market, and Sherborn Inn. The homes will be splendidly decorated by the floral experts of Chicatabot Garden Club, Dover Garden Club, Perennial Designs and Powisset Garden Club.

The three gardens are destinations in themselves. One is found along the banks of the Charles River and features a stone terrace, rose, grass, and shrub gardens which gently slope down to the water’s edge. The second garden is located on a pond with a wonderful rill and a unique sunken garden with raised beds of flowers, vegetables, and herbs. The third is an ever-changing woodland garden created by its owner, a noted landscape designer, which includes works of sculpture, a Tuscan courtyard, ceremonial fire pit, and water features.

This year, they will also be holding a special raffle on the day of the tour, with many items for the home and garden, as well as gift certificates from local stores, salons and restaurants. For more information, log on to www.friendsofdoverlibrary.com.

Wednesday, September 22, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – Autumn Splendor in Two Gardens

Find inspiration with the New England Wild Flower Society on Wednesday, September 22, from 10 – 1, at Ellen McFarland’s four-season garden in Westwood, Massachusetts, beautifully designed by Gary L. Koller with a series of garden rooms surrounding the converted carriage house/ barn. Mature plantings of trees and shrubs provide a backdrop for the interplay of color and texture from masses of perennials. A landscaped swimming pool with cascading waterfall adds a soothing note midway through the garden. This garden combines the best in design, plantings, and hardscape, seasoned with works of art. Then travel to Dover where you are invited to “enter and forget from where you’ve come.” This is the intention of designer Kevin Doyle for his garden visitors. Set on a rocky rise in Dover, “Cairn Croft,” unfurls down a slope, infused with beauty, plant texture, and moments of surprise and fun. Explore a woodland path, pond, wetland, formal parterre and driveway courtyard enhanced by elements of sculpture and garden art. The fee is $32 if you are a member of NEWFS, and $38 if you are not a member. To register, and for more information, log on to www.newfs.org.  Painting below by Leif Nilsson.

Wednesday, September 30, 10 am – 1 pm – Two Collectors’ Gardens

Visit two of the area’s finest fall gardens in their autumn glory.  The Dover garden sits on an acre of land, not far from the Charles River, with rich alluvial soil and plenty of moisture and light.  With these ingredients, Carrie Waterman has created an outstanding naturalistic garden, which has evolved to accommodate the owner’s passions for plant propagation, native plants and color. Plants with long bloom times and handsome foliage fill the mixed borders which peak in fall splendor. In nearby Needham, discover a fall garden that glows in the autumn light, highlighting a collection of brilliant maples, golden birches and deciduous confers, beech, bamboos and grasses of every type.  Using variation in foliage size, color, and texture, Ellen Lathi has achieved a bold and colorful effect for four-season interest. Natural stone, a bog filled with large-leafed plants, and a stream add to the fall scene. Both gardeners are fans of serendipity and love to see the native plants, with the help of the birds, spread themselves around and get comfortable!  Many Garden Club of the Back Bay members may remember seeing Ellen Lahti’s slide presentation at The Country Club last year, sponsored by The Boston Committee.  This tour is presented by The New England Wild Flower Society, and will cost $30 if a NEWFS member, $36 if a non member.  To register, log on to www.newfs.org, or call 508-877-7630.http://images.mooseyscountrygarden.com/mooseys-garden-tour/driveway-garden/autumn-garden-colors.jpg
