Saturday, October 17, 10:00 am – Eden’s Gems: A Walk in the Village Orchard

Garden Thyme programs are held on the third Saturday of each month and are FREE for members of Old Sturbridge Village. Led by Village horticultural and agricultural staff, these programs and workshops are held at various sites and deal with a variety of plant-related themes and topics. Participants gather at the Visitor Center at 10 a.m. each month and are led to the appropriate site or setting.  On October 17, enjoy Eden’s Gems: A Walk in the Village Orchard, with Christie Higginbottom. Did you ever wonder why 1800s cooks and cider makers had over 800 apple varieties to choose from and we only have a dozen or so? Meet the Village’s historic fruits — the Mothers, the Spitzenburgs, the Russets, the Baldwins and the Sheepsnose apples. Learn about seedlings, scions and rootstocks. Find out how the art and skill of propagating these trees keeps our apple heritage alive.  For more information, and directions, log on to www.osv.org.

Tuesday, October 20, 6:30 – 9:30 – Landscaping and Decorating with Bulbs

Explore a variety of colorful bulb options you can plant now for a spring display for the mixed flower border or for indoor forcing. You will learn the secrets to growing bulbs outdoors, including when and how to plant, designing for color combination, and resources for quality bulbs. We’ll also explore options for bulbs in shady spots. We’ll go beyond tulips and daffodils to explore bulb varieties that will add interest to your garden, and expand the bulb blooming season with lasting color. Plan this fall for a colorful spring, and then just sit back and enjoy the show.  The class is sponsored by Brookline Adult and Community Education, costs $38, and is taught by Peter Medaglia, owner of Gold Medal Gardens, who traded-in a career in marketing to start his own landscape design and construction firm specializing in intimate urban and suburban gardens. He has studied at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, The Arnold Arboretum, and The New York Botanical Gardens.  To register, log on to www.brooklineadulted.org, or call 617-730-2700.

Rain Cancellation of Garden Club Table at NABB Street Sale

Once again, heavy rain and a forecast of lightning has scuttled our plans to participate in the Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay’s Street Fair, originally scheduled to take place today, October 3, on the Dartmouth Street Mall between Newbury Street and Commonwealth Avenue.  We haven’t heard whether or not NABB and other vendors are going forward with their plans (we suspect not), but thank our volunteers, especially Committee Chair Maureen O’Hara, for their work preparing for today’s event.
