Saturday, November 7, 2-4 pm – Holiday Floral and Decor Demonstration

The Millis Garden Club invites you to a Holiday Floral and Decor Demonstration this Saturday, November 7, from 2 – 4 pm, at the St. Thomas Large Hall/Rectory, Route 109, Millis, Massachusetts (between 972 and 984 Main Street).  Master Floral Designer Barbara Wysk of Wysk Designs will create beautiful arrangements suitable for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and all arrangements will be raffled off.

Barbara’s world is flowers.  Her sense of design and her eye for color is extraordinary.  Her mind runs full of creative thoughts 24/7.  She’s ingenious on recycling objects found around the home into her designs. Her motto is “If it holds water, it’s fair game” and she will demonstrate that during this program.
One does not have to be a floral arranger to enjoy this program. She will offer many tidbits of information so that everyone can incorporate something into their upcoming holiday tables.

Festive holiday savories and sweets will be served.  $5 donation at the door suggested.

Saturday, November 14, 9:00 – 11:00 am – Asian Longhorn Beetle Battle

Asian Longhorned Beetle (“ALB”) is an invasive wood-boring pest that was discovered in Worcester, MA in August 2008. It is a huge threat to the trees that grow in our parks and along every street, and puts the livelihood of our state’s forests as well as our nursery and maple syrup industries at risk. Help us survey Boston’s trees for signs of this invasive beetle. Learn how to recognize ALB and ALB tree damage, and what trees are most vulnerable. A brief training session will be held before the survey. Friday, November 27 – Friday, December 4 – Festival of Trees

Beginning November 27 and continuing through December 4,  the Massachusetts Horticultural Society will hold its first Festival of Trees. Decorated Christmas trees of all sizes and styles will fill the Hunnewell Building. The trees, all “near real” will be decorated by a myriad of groups, societies and clubs. There will be a “Trustee’s Tree”, a “Volunteer Tree”, a “Master Gardeners” Tree, a “Garden Club” Tree, “Children’s Trees” and many, many more!  For further information, log on to www.masshort.org.

Saturday, November 21 & Saturday, December 5, 9 – 12:30 – Introduction to Winter Tree Identification

The Arnold Arboretum is sponsoring a two session class on Saturday mornings, November 21 and December 5, beginning at 9:30 a.m., with Arborist Kyle Stephens.  This class will provide an overview of the information necessary to identify deciduous trees during their dormant season. Looking at specific character combinations, participants will learn to determine the genus and species of several types of trees in the Boston area. The group will begin indoors with a discussion of basic classification techniques and then go outside to the Arboretum grounds to explore maples, oaks, lindens, buckeyes, hickories, hornbeams and as many other trees as time will allow. This class is recommended for the beginner-to-intermediate tree observer. The first class meets at the Dana Greenhouse Classroom. The second class meets at the Hunnewell Building. Dress warmly for spending the morning outdoors. A hand lens may be helpful, but is not necessary. Fee $65 Arboretum member, $75 nonmember.  To register, log on to www.arboretum.harvard.edu.
