Wednesday, March 13, 9:30 am – Sugar, Sex and Poison: Shocking Plant Secrets Caught on Camera

Engaging speaker, horticulturist, author, and photographer Bill Cullina will entertain The Lexington Garden Club, and the public, again on Wednesday, March 13, beginning at 9:30 am at the National Heritage Museum, 33 Marrett Road in Lexington. This time the Executive Director of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens will give us a close-up view of the many clever and beautiful ways plants defend themselves and attract animals, insects and other partners in the work of pollination, seed dispersal, and nutrient acquisition. We’ll also have an opportunity to purchase Bill’s books before and after his talk.  Free.

Wednesday, March 20, 7:00 pm – Dumpster Diving with greenGoat

The Millis Garden Club and the Norfolk Garden Club will present Dumpster Diving with greenGoat on Wednesday, March 20, beginning at 7 pm at the Norfolk Public Library, 139 Main Street in Norfolk. Leading the trend in green building, one local company rescues building materials and landscaping in residential renovation projects, often giving materials away. Enter greenGoat, a green demolition charity that has redistributed reusable building materials, including garden plants, that would otherwise get dumped. To date, the organization has channeled over 700 tons of material back into reuse and shows no signs of slowing. Donor homes get a tax deduction, and adopting homes get a very good deal, making this matchmaking exercise a winner.

Amy Bauman, greenGoat’s founder and director, will share stories and strategies at the joint March meeting of Millis Garden Club and Norfolk Garden Club.  Bauman’s presentation, will cover decisions that homeowners can make to minimize the environmental impact of home renovations. The talk is free and open to the public.

Saturday, April 20, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm – 14th Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup

Want to make a difference in your community? Join thousands of volunteers from throughout the watershed for the 14th Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup! Every year the Cleanup engages over 3,000 volunteers to beautify the Charles River and its tributaries by picking up trash and cleaning the riverbanks at over 100 sites from Milford to Boston. The Esplanade Association is now registering volunteers to participate in the Cleanup!

Last year volunteers helped remove 40 tons of trash along the Charles River. The Esplanade Association provides volunteers with cleanup supplies, snacks, and a free t-shirt. Following the Cleanup you are invited to a volunteer appreciation picnic at the Hatch Shell with music, games provided by Knucklebones, and other fun. Visit our website, www.esplanadeassociation.org, to find out more. March 14th is the last day to register to participate in the Cleanup. Spots on the Esplanade fill up very fast. We are already at 350 volunteers and we often meet our volunteer maximum of 600 people well before March 14th, so please register now!
