  • Saturday, June 29, 2:30 – 4:00 pm – Reveal the Hidden Forest: Fungi at the Arboretum

    Susan Goldhor, Biologist and President of the Boston Mycological Club, along with Joel Kershner, Arboretum Field Studies Guide and BMC member, will lead an Arnold Arboretum walk on Saturday, June 29, from 2:30 – 4 (rain date June 30), meeting at the Bussey Street Gate.  Turn your attention to the fascinating world of fungi at the Arboretum.  Discover and identify some of the fungi that interact in complex ways with other organisms under the soil, within leaves, on bark and rocks.  In case of inclement weather contact 617-384-5209.  Reserve on line at www.my.arboretum.harvard.edu.

  • Tuesday, June 25, 11:00 am – Ribbon Cutting for the Harbor-Link Gardens

    The Boston Committee of the Garden Club of America and The Boston Harbor Association invite you to a ribbon cutting for the Harbor-Link Gardens on Tuesday, June 25 at 11:00 am.  The event takes place at the old Northern Avenue Bridge in Boston, on the Seaport/Barking Crab side.  RSVP to Michele Hanss, Chair of The Boston Committee, if you plan to attend.  Her email address is m.hanss@comcast.net.  As you may know, The Boston Committee, through its Boston Committee Blossom Fund,  provided $50,000 in funding to The Boston Harbor Association to help create this new addition to Boston’s park inventory.  The Garden Club of the Back Bay is one of the thirteen clubs which make up The Boston Committee.  A website for The Boston Committee is under construction, and we will announce its launch here this summer.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm and Thursday, June 27, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – A Seaside Journey

    The Osterville Garden Club will present a standard flower show, A Seaside Journey, at the Osterville Historical Museum, 155 West Bay Road, Osterville on June 26th, 1-5 pm and June 27th, 10-4 pm. Take a trip to Shanghai with floral designs interpreting the journey throughout the museum rooms. An extensive horticulture exhibit will be on display in the Boathouse of the museum.     Twilight Garden Party 2013 – Signature Drinks

    We concoct a signature drink each year for the Twilight Garden Party, to serve along with wine and sparkling waters.  This year we had two, the Peach Blossom and the Rose Petal.  The Peach Blossom was 2 parts vodka, 2 parts fresh peach puree, 1/2 part peach schnapps, and 3 dashes peach bitters.  The Rose Petal was 1 part Monin rose syrup, 1 part Domaine de St. Germaine (elderflower liqueur), and 3 parts aromatic gin, such as Old Tom (not a super dry gin, like Beefeaters or Tanqueray).  Below is our retiring Treasurer Elisabeth Lay sampling a Peach Blossom.

  • Tuesdays, July 9 – July 30, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Chinese Painting and Garden History Workshop

    The Landscape Institute at Boston Architectural College will take a workshop on the road at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, on four successive Tuesdays, July 9 – 30, from 6 – 9.  Entitled Chinese Painting and Garden History Workshop, this rich seminar is collaboratively taught by Chinese landscape historian YoYi Chen and landscape painter Ma Qingxiong.  His work is shown below. This unique offering is a creative course, exposing students to historical concepts in Chinese landscape design, such as using multiple viewpoints and evocative juxtapositions, as well as teaching participants to compose artistic landscape ink drawings.  The format is a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and workshop painting in the gardens.  $300.  To register, log on to www.the-bac.edu/LI.

    Twilight Garden Party 2013 – Food

    Jules Catering did a wonderful job as caterers for our event this year, providing an elaborate cheese and terrine table, along with passed hors d’oeuvres including maple infused scallops wrapped in bacon, beef tenderloin on potato pancakes, Peking duck horns, vegetable samosas with mango dipping sauce, and brie and pear tartlets.

  • Thursday, June 20, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Vegetable Gardening for Everyone

    Thursdays at the Hort will present Susan Hammond, Master Gardener at the Keeper Vegetable Garden, on Thursday, June 20, at 7 pm, at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley. Vegetable gardening is something everyone can enjoy, from the novice to the experienced gardener. It can be a way to bring fresh food to your table, teach children where food comes from, or even a way to beautify your yard! We’ll look at different types of vegetable gardens and discuss layout, variety choices, and growing techniques.  $10 for Mass Hort members, $15 for non-members.  Register on line at www.masshort.org.   • Thursday, June 27, 6:00 pm – The Shadow of the Quagga

    On Thursday, June 27, beginning at 6 pm at The Harvard Museum of Natural History, 26 Oxford Street in Cambridge, Eric Scott will speak on The Shadow of the Quagga: What a Long-lost Zebra Reveals about Horses, Evolution, and Extinction. The quagga, a South African zebra, became extinct in the 1880s, but it still shapes our views on life and death in the animal kingdom. Paleontologist Eric Scott (San Bernardino County Museum) provides a brief history of the quagga—its discovery, exploitation, extinction, and potential rebirth—and reveals how these animals continue to inform us about paleontology, biology, and equine evolution.  Free and open to the public.
