In this seven part series at the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens, award-winning artist and educator Susan Swinand offers critiques and projects to spark your creativity and develop your skill.  The class is suitable for adults at all levels of experience. Lessons will focus on basic design principles, learning to portray what you see, mixing color, and watercolor painting techniques such as applying washes and glazes, wet-into-wet color, achieving hard and soft edges, etc.  The classes begin Thursday, October 7 from 1 – 4 and continue through November 17.  Friends of Wellesley Botanic Garden member price $200, nonmembers $250.  Register at 781-283-3094.1822535-CVLKHJXM-7

Wednesday – Friday, October 19 – 21, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Fruits of Fall: Botanical Illustration

Enjoy the bountiful fruits of fall in a lasting portrait. In this three-day colored-pencil workshop at Berkshire Botanical Garden on October 19 – 21, botanical illustrator Carol Morley will examine the colors, shapes and light, and shade of the fruit. It is easy to fall in love with the brilliant color of a subject only to find the final portrait falling flat. In this workshop, students will learn how to control and select the colors needed from the beginning and progress with confidence. Starting with a tonal study of the fruit in graphite, the class will have fun finding all the colors that are present in the fruit, making a color palette that will serve as a guide. Working from the palette, students then make a 3D color study and progress to the fruit’s final portrait, selecting the appropriate colors that will give the fruit form and capture its succulent character. Carol Ann Morley is a professional artist and dedicated teacher working in Milton, NH.
