Friday, April 14, 12:30 pm – iNaturalist City Challenge

Contribute to Science, and participate in the iNaturalist City Challenge.

Every observation can contribute to biodiversity science, from the rarest butterfly to the most common backyard weed. iNaturalist shares your findings with scientific data repositories like the Global Biodiversity Information Facility to help scientists find and use your data. All you have to do is observe.

Record your encounters with other organisms and maintain life lists, all in the cloud. Works on all devices: smartphones, tablets, etc. Help scientists and resource managers understand when and where organisms occur. Connect with experts who can identify the organisms you observe (they look at your picture and provide identification.) Build your knowledge by talking with other naturalists and helping others.

The Emerald Necklace Conservancy is on a mission to make Boston the city with the most documented natural species. Join them on a nature walk Friday, April 14 at 12:30 (meet at the Longwood T stop), or make observations on your own using the iNaturalist app between April 14 – 18. Register for the walk at www.emeraldnecklace.org.

Thursday, April 20, 6:00 pm – Ocean Evolution Today

A Harvard Museum of Natural History Panel Discussion on Ocean Evolution Today will take place Thursday, April 20, beginning at 6 pm in the Science Center, Hall D, 1 Oxford Street. Participants will include:

Samantha B. Joye, Athletic Association Professor in Arts and Sciences, Department of Marine Sciences, University of Georgia

Bruce H. Robison, Senior Scientist and Midwater Ecologist, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute

Randi Dawn Rotjan, Research Assistant Professor, Department of Biology, Boston University Marine Program

Moderated by Peter R. Girguis, Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University; Adjunct Research Engineer, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute

Human activities are causing changes in the ocean that could influence the evolution of its organisms. In this panel discussion, three marine scientists with expertise in chemistry, microbiology, geology, marine conservation, and the use of remotely operated vehicles to study deep-sea organisms will discuss the impact of human activity on ocean and coastal ecosystems and answer questions about actions that individuals and organizations can take to support the health of the ocean.

Presented in collaboration with the Cambridge Science Festival. The Evolution Matters Lecture Series is supported by a generous gift from Drs. Herman and Joan Suit.  Free parking is available at the 52 Oxford Street Garage.Free and open to the public.

Thursday, April 13, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – An Evening with Carl Dooley

For the Trustees of Reservations Signature Chef Tasting Series, The KITCHEN is partnering with some of the region’s most celebrated chefs who source from New England’s local farmers, fishermen and artisans. We’re continuing the series with Chef Carl Dooley from The Table in Cambridge on Thursday, April 13th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

Chef Dooley trained at the New England Culinary institute and spent years working under some of the best chefs in the country, learning a wide range of styles and techniques from molecular gastronomy to butchery. He was also a Season 13 competitor on Top Chef. His restaurant, The Table, showcases French techniques to highlight both seasonal ingredients and international flavors.

At Chef Dooley’s tasting event (and all the events in this series), you will enjoy a seated dinner while you watch the Chef make each dish, taste multiple courses with wine pairings, and delight in learning from one of Boston’s innovative culinary leaders.
