  • Holiday Wreaths – Deadline Approaching

Tomorrow is the absolutely, positively, very last day to order a fully decorated wreath online, and we encourage you to click on to https://bostonflora.com/shop/ and do so now. Next week, when we are at The First Lutheran Church making and delivering, we will sell you a wreath with a bow while wreath supplies last, if you stop by, but no amount of wheedling will succeed in scoring you one of our custom designed fully decorated wreaths. We look forward to seeing our volunteers next week, and keep watch on Instagram for live “action shots” of the proceedings.

The picture below features the work of Jessica Smith of Folium. Folium is a study of the colors, scale, patterns, and repetitive components of flowers, foliage, and small plants — recreated entirely in paper. Jessica Smith is a Boston-based artist. She received her BFA with a focus in jewelry and metalsmithing from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2007. In addition to her studio jewelry, this ongoing study is born out of a lifelong love of plants. All work is hand-dyed, hand-cut, and assembled individually. No two flowers are quite the same. Materials include tissue paper, Italian crepe, canson paper, vintage stamens, and wire. Colors are manipulated using pastels, alcohol inks, and artist’s gouache.

  • Saturday, December 7, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Shrubs in Winter

Even without leaves, most shrubs are easily recognizable in winter. On December 7 from 10 – 2 at Garden in the Woods in Framingham, learn to identify 20 native New England shrubs through such characteristics as branching patterns, bark, persistent flowers and fruits, growth forms, galls, and habitats. We begin indoors looking at twig samples and slides, then head out into the Garden for a close look at our subjects. We will also consider the natural history of these shrubs, and finish indoors with a twig quiz. Bring lunch and a hand lens. The class will be led by Roland “
Boot” Boutwell, and is $60 for NPT members, $72 for nonmembers. It is co-sponsored by the Massachusetts Association on Conservation Commissions. Register at http://www.nativeplanttrust.org/events/shrubs-winter/

  • Holiday Wreaths – Supporting Parks

The Garden Club of the Back Bay gives annual grants to many parks throughout the city and region. We support The Friends of the Public Garden, The Esplanade Association, The Friends of Copley Square, the newly created Charlesgate Alliance, The Emerald Necklace Conservancy, and more, in addition to the hands-on work we undertake in the neighborhood. Those grants are, in some cases. critical to the the continued operation of the organizations. In other cases, it is a show of support and an opportunity to raise awareness of the issues the groups face. Please order a holiday wreath today, or a beautiful poinsettia plants, and help us help them. https://bostonflora.com/shop/
