Wednesday, April 29, 12:00 noon – 1:00 pm – Planting Design Considerations Webinar

On Wednesdays at noon, ELA invites you on A Walk in the Garden, a virtual weekly diversion as we adjust to the restrictions that the COVID-19 virus has forced onto our lives.

Presented as free webinars to gardeners everywhere, these presentations invite garden and landscape experts to share gardening tips, beautiful images, and inspiration. We hope anyone who is isolating, quarantining, or sheltering-in-place will find comfort and collective strength with a communal walk in the garden.

On April 29 at noon EDT, join Christie Dustman to discuss Planting Design Considerations. As you survey your garden, do you have only one of each plant? Do you see other gardens that seem to be in bloom throughout the seasons and then come home to your unexciting garden? Does planting design seem to be an innate sense that you just don’t have? Come and learn to think about plants in terms of their form and function first, and then learn some strategies to best lay out your planting plan.

Saturday, May 2, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm – Introduction to Coiled Basketry – Cancelled

Have you ever looked around outside and wondered what you could make with the abundance of natural materials growing in your yard? In this workshop led by Katie Grove you will learn how to take grasses, cattails, daylily leaves, and so many other natural materials and create coiled baskets. Coiling is an ancient and versatile basketry technique used all over the world to create beautiful vessels that can be either decorative or functional.

During the May 2 workshop at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, we will discuss how to identify, harvest, and prepare a variety of local materials and then use them to create a unique basket. Cattails, grasses, ornamental foliage, daylily leaves and several other locally harvested plants will be provided for students to make their basket. Everyone’s basket will turn out to be a unique work of art. If you are excited about using found natural materials to create art and learning a fun and unique new skill, then join us! Everyone will leave with a medium sized basket (approx. 8” x 8” x 5”), the skills to create more pieces in the future, and inspiration to explore your local natural landscape.  $110 for Mass Hort members, $135 for nonmembers.
