Saturday & Sunday, June 26 & 27, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Braveboat Harbor Farm Tour

This York, Maine garden, which has been evolving over the last 75 years, surrounds and complements a Georgian-style stone house. There are formal and informal borders, a vegetable garden, orchard, and collections of various flowering trees and shrubs. Apples and pears are espaliered on the house and along the walls of the formal front garden. Water features include a pond in the woodland garden, a farm pond with rustic bridge, and the Atlantic Ocean. This treasure is protected by a sculpted arborvitae hedge on the northwest, a mature stand of hickory on the northeast, and an extensive screen of old lilacs on the southeast.

Ongoing projects include expanding the collection of magnolias and rhodendrons, a new shrub border in the old orchard, a woodland walk, a summerhouse with views to the pond and the sea, and the constant refreshing of the front walled garden. The Garden Conservancy is sponsoring this garden as part of its 2021 Open Days schedule. To register, visit www.gardenconservancy.org

Friday, July 9, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm – Harvard Designs: Arboretum and Science Complex

Join The Native Plant Trust on July 9 from 9:30 – 2:30 for a landscape study of two Harvard University landscapes—Arnold Arboretum and the Science and Engineering Complex—designed by the award-winning landscape architecture firm STIMSON. This program follows the landscape architecture process from planning to implementation. We begin at Arnold Arboretum, discussing the Arboretum’s role in selecting plants for all Harvard University projects. We will then visit Harvard’s Science and Engineering Center (SEC) to tour the newly installed landscape and see the implementation of the arboretum’s recommendations. STIMSON landscape architects will also discuss the role of the SEC landscape project in the evolution of Harvard’s campus and key design factors such as stormwater management, landform orientation, and surface materials. The program is cosponsored with the Boston Society of Landscape Architects. Instructors will be Glen Valentine and Joe Wahler, principals, and Ryosuke Takahashi, associate, STIMSON. $60 for sponsor members, $72 for nonmembers.
