  • Wednesday, July 15, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. – Sandwich Garden Tour

    Visit lovely Sandwich homes at your leisure on Wednesday, July 15, from 11 – 3.  Light refreshments will be served at Green Briar Nature Center, 6 Discovery Hill Road in East Sandwich. This event is a benefit for The Thornton W. Burgess Society.

    The Thornton W. Burgess Society is a non-profit educational organization founded in 1976 to carry on the pioneering conservation work of author/naturalist Thornton W. Burgess (1874 – 1965). Mr. Burgess, who was born and grew up in Sandwich, Massachusetts, went on to achieve national and international recognition for his childrens stories that teach lessons of conservation and love of wildlife.

    Over 170 books and 15,000 stories by Burgess chronicle the tales of Peter Rabbit and his animal friends, including Jimmy Skunk, Grandfather Frog, Johnny Chuck, Sammy Jay, Reddy Fox, Hooty Owl and many others. Through these engaging stories, generations of young people have learned about the natural world and have developed an understanding of the importance of conservation of our natural resources.

    The Thornton W. Burgess Society operates three facilities. The Thornton W. Burgess Museum on the shores of Shawme Pond on Water Street (Rte 130) in Sandwich village and the Green Briar Nature Center, the Jam Kitchen at 6 Discovery Hill Road (off Rte. 6A) in East Sandwich and the East Sandwich Game Farm.

  • Thursday, July 16, 6-9 pm (rain date Thursday, July 23) – 11th Annual Lantern Festival

    Join The Friends of Forest Hills Educational Trust on Thursday, July 16 from 6 – 9 pm (rain date Thursday, July 23) for a moving memorial ceremony inspired by Buddhist rituals. Inscribe a lantern with a personal message to friends or family and float it across Lake Hibiscus at sunset.

    In this breathtaking ceremony of remembrance, visitors to this lush, Victorian landscape make paper lanterns and set them afloat on the peaceful waters of a small lake. This ritual is based on the traditional Japanese Bon Festival, a time when a door opens to the world of the ancestors, allowing us to send messages to the other side. People enjoy picnics on the grass and a multi-cultural program of music and dance. They decorate their lanterns with calligraphy and notes to those who have died. At sunset, a candle is lit in each lantern, and the glimmering lanterns are set afloat.   • Friday – Saturday, July 10 and 11, 10 – 4 – Seaside Gardens Tour

    The Rockport Garden Club presents Seaside Gardens, a tour of fifteen private Rockport seaside gardens, on Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Ten stops provide access, and each garden offers unique plantings and styles.  Most of the gardens are on the waterfront along Rockport’s spectacular coastline, while others feature ocean views.  Perennials, refreshments, and original art will be offered for sale at designated tour sites.  All proceeds will be used to maintain Rockport’s town gardens and to fund civic projects and scholarships.  This is a rain or shine event.  Admission is $25 in advance (call 978-546-2250 or 978-546-7871).  Tickets may be purchased at Toadhall Bookstore, 51 Main Street, Rockport.  For further information,  you may email Elaine Hassler at e.hassler@comcast.net, or log on to www.rockportgardenclub.org.

  • Thursday, July 9, 10 – 4 – Enchanted Garden Tour of New Seabury

    Join Heritage Museums discovering the enchanted private sanctuaries of New Seabury and Popponesset Island on Thursday, July 9th, 2009 from 10a.m. to 4 p.m. (rain or shine). All proceeds benefit the many wonderful programs and activities at Heritage Museums & Gardens. Make the day even more special with a luncheon at the New Seabury Club.  The extraordinary vistas from the main dining room are the perfect complement to your garden tour experience!

    The gardens are located throughout the New Seabury & Popponesset Island area and all can be reached by car. Parking is available near and around all the homes on the tour. Be prepared to walk from parking areas to each of the gardens.

    There will not be any shuttle services provided. This is a garden tour and walking is involved. Please be prepared with comfortable walking shoes—and dress for the weather !

  • Tuesday, July 14, 4 – 8 pm – Children’s Party at Green Animals Topiary Garden

    Children and adults of all ages are invited to join the festivities at the Preservation Society of Newport County’s annual Children’s Party at Green Animals Topiary Garden, 380 Cory’s Lane, Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The party will feature circus acts, music, magic, clowns, puppets, pony rides, kiddie rides, refreshments and much more on this historic seven acre estate overlooking Narragansett Bay.  No reservations required, and tickets are sold at the door only.   • Thursday, July 9 – Saturday, July 11 – Antiques in the Gardens

    Antiques in the Gardens will return to Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay Harbor, Maine,  in an expanded format on Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11, with a gala preview party on Thursday evening, July 9. Dozens of selected members of the Maine Antiques Dealers Association will show and sell their finest wares. The Gala Preview Party will offer a first glimpse at the antiques show amid a delightful atmosphere and with superb food and drink. See below for the latest list of the exceptional featured caterers for the preview party.

    The Gala Preview Party from 5:00-8:00 p.m. includes wine, beer, and spirits from across Maine, along with delectable treats from Maine’s finest food purveyors; for example, Hartstone Inn, Treats, Sweetgrass Farm Winery & Distillery.

    Tickets to the Preview Party are $75 per person and must be purchased in advance, either by logging on to www.mainegardens.org or calling (207) 633-4333. Preview Party tickets include not only admission to the party on Thursday, July 9, but also admission to both the Gardens and show for Friday and Saturday.

    11:30 a.m. -1:00 p.m. The Herb Garden in 18th Century New England, Judy Hallberg $20

    Herbs provide interesting foliage and are also the basis for lotions and salves with healing properties. Learn about herbs and the ways in which they were gardened and used in the 1700s. Judy Hallberg works with the 17th and 18th century gardens of the Ipswich Historical Society and recently completed restoration of the society’s 17th century Housewife’s Herb Garden.

    1:30 p.m. -2:30 p.m. Cape Ann Museum, Docent-led tour of the exhibit “A View from the Terrace” Free

    Old Garden Roses are rewarding and easy to grow using organic methods. You’ll learn how to plant, prune and care for these beautiful roses. Each person will take home a potted rose cutting. Bring gloves and a pair of pruners. Peggy J. Flanagan is a landscape designer and an adjunct instructor in the landscape design program at North Shore Community College. She specializes in the history of New England gardening.

    Tower Hill’s annual tour of exceptional private gardens this year will feature the gardens of Northborough, Massachusetts.  Discover the gardeners’ unique perspectives, and return to your own garden with fresh ideas and inspiration. This special event features lush, meticulously tended gardens in the Northborough area.

    As always, a ticket to “City Spaces/Country Places” includes FREE admission all day to Tower Hill Botanic Garden. As a bonus this year, the Rose Society will present a Rose Show at Tower Hill on the same day as the Garden Tour!

    “City Spaces/Country Places” is an important fund-raiser for the Worcester County Horticultural Society and helps to support the educational programs and the ongoing care and stewardship of the gardens at Tower Hill. You can show your support for the Garden Tour by purchasing a sponsor ticket at $125 or a patron ticket at $75. These tickets help Tower Hill meet its mission and must be purchased in advance.   • Saturday, June 13, 9:30 – 12:30 – Walk for Open Space

    The Allston Brighton Community Development Corporation, Allston Brighton Green Space Advocates, and Whole Foods are sponsoring a walk in support of the CDC’s open space advocacy work.  Register on line or by telephone by June 12.  Check in begins at 9:30 a.m., and walk begins promptly at 10.  Meet at Brian J. Honan Apartments on Everett Street, just south of the bridge over the Mass.
