  • Friday, November 15, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Transformation: Through the Eyes of a Designer

Transformation: A Design Showcase in Rapid Images, features the work of landscape designers who have rejuvenated abandoned and tired spaces into places which inspire hope and delight. Presentations by contributing artists and contractors show the many layers, skills, and creative inspirations that go into making a truly memorable landscape.

Designers’ presentations will be in a Photo Flash format: Each presenter gets 10 slides and 20 seconds per slide to tell their story. The event takes place at Lexington Depot, home of the Lexington Historical Society, 1332 Massachusetts Avenue (Depot Square), Lexington, Massachusetts, on Friday, November 15, from 6 – 8.

So many stories to tell “Quickly”: From empty lot to happy dog park in Dorchester; from post-construction high school devastation to award winning campus in Lexington; from inner-city Boston grunge to fabulous neighborhood oasis; from tired turf to soothing garden for mourning kids in Arlington.

How do designers envision and create these miraculous transformations? Come find out, see the stories, mingle with designers, sip, munch.

  • Holiday Wreath Deadline Alert – A Late Thanksgiving!

Holiday Wreath Deadline Alert – A Late Thanksgiving!

Ordinarily we don’t begin to worry about wreath orders until much later in the season, but this year we need to remind everyone that Thanksgiving is late – November 28, and that day is our wreath order deadline date.  Yes, if an order comes in on Friday we will certainly accept it, but the danger is that many people wait until Thanksgiving is over to begin thinking about Christmas or Hannukah, and this year that is not an option.  No extra week between Thanksgiving and wreath week means your orders must be in the mail before you carve that turkey.  We will be setting up for decoration on the Sunday following Thanksgiving, and decorating from Monday through Thursday, December 2 – 5.  We don’t accept orders for fully decorated wreaths during wreath week, so please click here and print your order form today.

  • Holiday Wreaths 2013 Season Kickoff

    Holiday Wreaths 2013 Season Kickoff

While you may think we’re crazy to think about holiday wreaths in October, we actually think about holiday wreaths all year long.  In summer and fall we clip and dry natural materials, buy ribbon on sale, schedule venues, design order forms and advertisements, and generally obsess about the beautiful creations we will make in December.  This year, our wreath project will be in full swing December 1 (set up at The First Lutheran Church of Boston), then, on Monday December 2 – Thursday December 5, we will produce and deliver hundreds of glorious wreaths for our neighborhood and beyond.  All proceeds benefit the trees of Back Bay, and help fund our many charitable projects.  Order forms will be mailed soon to customers from the past two years, and to our membership.  If you are not on that list, you may print the order form from this website, email info@bostonflora.com and request one (we can send it by email or snail mail as you prefer,) or call 617-859-8865 and leave your name, address and telephone number.   Over the next weeks we will feature pictures and information on our many styles, each of which is custom designed for the customer.

  • Thursday, October 17, 7:00 pm – 114th Honorary Medals Dinner

Please join The Massachusetts Horticultural Society for an evening of cocktails and dinner and welcome  keynote speaker William Cullina, Executive Director of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens,  the 2013 George Robert White Medal of Honor Awardee.

The 114th Honorary Medals Dinner will take place Thursday, October 17, 2013 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Hunnewell Building Carriage House,  900 Washington Street, Wellesley, Massachusetts. The keynote address is Gardening On the Edge of the Continent.  Gardening in Coastal Maine has more than its share of challenges and opportunities. Close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean buffers the coast from the worst of winter cold and as importantly, summer’s heat. Still, winter is long and snow-cover unreliable. Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is trying out many, many perennial species and cultivars for suitability and adaptability. In this talk, William Cullina will detail some of the Gardens’ triumphs, failures, and “too soon to tells” in an informative, humorous, and visually rich presentation about gardening on the edge of the Continent.

Other award winners include Mary Ann Streeter, Allandale Farm, Art Scarpa, the Garden Club of America, the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, Katherine Tracey of Avant Gardens, and meteorologist David Epstein.  Tickets are $125, and may be ordered online at www.masshort.org.

  • Charles River Clean Up Boat Update

The Garden Club of the Back Bay is proud to support Tom McNichol and the Charles River Clean Up Boat.  Below is Tom’s end of season wrap up and a link to an article published in The Boston Globe. To contribute, visit www.cleanupboat.org:

It’s been a wonderful year on the Charles. The Spring was rainy and it upset our schedule for a while, but by the end of June we were right on track.

The 4th of July was a great party and a credit to the City and all the people and organizations involved in putting it on.

For the Clean Up Boat it is always a day we need to prepare for. This year, in an effort to get some new donors, we worked to get some publicity. Anne Benaquist worked hard to get articles in the Cambridge and Newton Tabs. The Metrowest Daily News wrote a nice article on the Clean Up Boat. But nary a donation materialized from these efforts. Peter DeMarco wrote an article in the Globe when we were starting (9 years ago) and it generate a number of donations that got us going. Since this was our 10th year he agreed to do another story, only if I guaranteed that there would be trash. The first time he came, we went all day and got very little trash. So I set it up for him to come right after the 4th, and we did not disappoint him.  By the way, David Solomon was the crew for that day, and the article included a nice picture of him.

The volunteers have been wonderful. Always on time. Always cheerful, enthusiastic and hard working. Our schedule was basically full in late July and we have had only a rare cancellation.

We are doing a great job. Last Friday, Bob Gaffney, a 10 year veteran captain of the Clean Up Boat, reported he had never seen the river so clean.

Our combined efforts have kept the river clean, for so long, that people assume it is always clean. Not so, but our efforts have made it so. As always take a few moments and enjoy this unique asset that we have right in the middle of our metropolitan area.
