  • Saturday, June 26, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm – Digging Deeper: A Small Space with a Big Feel

Join The Garden Conservancy and George and Marcia Chapman for a walk through their remarkable 37-year-old, half-acre garden on Cape Cod, in East Falmouth, on June 26 at 10:30 am. Moving purposefully through the space, these horticultural experts and generous teachers will share the specific techniques used—layering, vistas, winding paths, and obscured property lines—to create a garden with an engaging array of features that feels much larger than its actual size. Along the way there will be discussion of the hundreds of varieties of plants these collectors use with finesse. Regardless of the scale of your garden and the depth of your experience, be prepared to be inspired and take away practical ideas you can apply elsewhere. The Chapmans have worked in professional horticulture for more than 45 years, directing three retail garden centers and growing plants on fifteen acres and in three acres of greenhouses. Their garden has been featured in Cape Cod Home and Fine Gardening magazines.

  • Friday, June 18 – Sunday, June 20 – Blooming Art 2021

Blooming Art is Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club’s exciting show that pairs the artwork of Vineyard artists with floral designs inspired by those works, created by Garden Club members.  Happy news is that Blooming Art is returning to the Old Mill this year… A little different from past years, but happening nonetheless.  In past years, we began the Blooming Art event with an ‘Opening Night Cocktail Celebration’, but due to the uncertainty of Covid, we have chosen to not have the opening night event be a part of Blooming Art this year.  Instead, this lovely celebration of art and flowers will begin on Friday, and will be open to the public on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm and on Sunday from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm.  No pre-registration is necessary, an admission fee of $10.00 will be taken at the door. This event will be Covid compliant, based on the State and town regulations in place at the time of the Show.

This year we have 34 artists presenting their work and have paired the art with 34 of our Garden Club members that will be doing the floral designs for the show.  All of the art work will be for sale with the Club receiving a percentage of the sales. We are planning an in-person demonstration for floral designers in May, so for exact dates and times that are available, please email Anda Woodward at andawoodward@gmail.com. • Friday, June 18, 10:30 am – 12:00 pm – Hydrangea Propagation, Online

Mal Condon, Heritage Museums & Garden’s Curator of Hydrangeas, will share the details of plant propagation techniques developed specifically for the home garden. Propagation is a pleasurable pursuit and a most enjoyable way of making more plants – for your own garden and to share with gardener friends. While hydrangeas will be the main focus of this demonstration, these practices can be applied to many other woody ornamental plants. Participants will be introduced to the needed components and shown step-by-step instructions to prepare and “strike” their own cuttings at home. Details on “next step” nurturing to transition your rooted cuttings into well-rooted plants will also be presented.

The live webinar on June 18 from 10:30 – noon will include time for questions, as well as a PDF of the slides for your reference. All program registrants will receive a link to the video recording, available for 48 hours after the event. Advance registration is required. Don’t miss this important “how-to” workshop – register today! $17 for Heritage Gardens members, $27 for nonmembers. Visit www.heritagemuseumsandgardens.org.

This Zoom presentation will take place June 16 at 5:30, and is sponsored by The Polly Hill Arboretum, Bartlett Tree Experts and the Dukes Conservation District. $10; FREE for PHA members. • Christmas Stroll Updates

With community safety as its top priority, the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce has postponed the 47th Annual Christmas Stroll until 2021. There will be no organized Christmas Stroll for 2020. In its place, Nantucket Noel, a shop local initiative, will run from 27 November through 31 December 2020, allowing Nantucket’s residents to safely enjoy the magic of the season virtually, while still supporting local businesses for their holiday shopping.

Kennebunkport’s Christmas Prelude, December 3 – 13, will be primarily virtual, with tree lighting, caroling, Santa’s arrival, but the town will be decorated as always and there will be a special Outdoor Christmas Market. Updated 2020 Modified Schedule on the Official Kennebunkport Business Association Website

Chatham’s Christmas by the Sea Stroll 2020 was scheduled to be held Friday, December 11 – Sunday, December 13. While Chatham is unable to host this year, they invite you to visit throughout the entire season. Smaller events, sales and promotions may be viewed at https://chathammerchants.com/christmasbythesea

Other locations which traditionally host holiday strolls have either cancelled or have not yet announced plans, but I think we can safely assume most towns will be cautious. Tree lighting ceremonies in the Boston Parks are still on the calendar, but we will update as we learn more. Visit https://www.boston-discovery-guide.com/christmas-tree-lighting-ceremonies.html
