  • Wednesday, June 6, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Landscape Pests and Problems Walkabout

    Get some hands-on experience scouting and identifying landscape diseases, insects, weeds, and abiotic problems on Wednesday, June 6 from 5 – 7 pm. Join Tawny Simisky, Extension Entomologist and Russ Norton, Horticulture and Agriculture Extension Educator, for a walk through the Heritage Museums & Gardens landscape as they discuss and demonstrate how to put IPM practices to work efficiently and examine some of the most common pest and cultural problems of woody ornamentals. Dress for walking; workshop held rain or shine. Bring a clipboard, pencil and hand lens if possible. Preregistration required as space is limited; the cost is $50.     Spring comes just a little later on the Cape. The Osterville Garden Club will hold its Annual Plant and Bake Sale on Saturday, May 26 on the lawn of the Osterville Village Library, Wianno Avenue, from 9 – noon. Please note the rain date of Sunday, May 27, just in case!  You will find a wide selection of plants and baked goods, plus gently-used gardening supplies, available for purchase.   • Sunday, February 18, 10:30 am or 12:30 pm – Amazing Animal Ambassadors

    Bethany Jakubson is the owner of Amazing Animal Ambassadors and grew up on Cape Cod. She has been working in zoos and aquariums since 2006 and went on to get a Bachelor of Science degree in Captive Wildlife Care and Education at Unity College in Maine. She has studied Wildlife Management through the University of Pretoria in South Africa as well. Bethany went on to work for several traveling companies who teach with an assortment of animals, and over the years she has rescued many animals of her own. Two years ago she started the company using some of the animals she had rescued over the years and since then has been expanding the business to have a wide variety of reptiles, birds, mammals and even amphibians and insects. It is Bethany’s passion.

    Bethany will be bringing to this Cape Cod Museum of Natural History program some of her favorite members of the natural world including: Cali, the talking Sulfur Crested Cockatoo; Boomerang, the Kookaburra, a member of the Kingfisher family; Big Red, the Red Tegu which is a large lizard from the rain forest of South America; Milo the Fennec Fox and Peter Pan the African Pygmy Hedgehog (pictured) that is covered with quills but not related to the porcupine. Bethany will also be bringing an assortment of smaller reptiles and insects. Fun for the whole family!   • Saturday, January 13, 10:00 am – 11:15 am – Winter Walk at Polly Hill Arboretum

    Join Polly Hill Arboretum staff for a look at plants of interest in the winter landscape. Every season of the year the arboretum offers something of beauty and interest to visitors. Meet at the Visitor Center, 809 State Road, Tisbury, Martha’s Vineyard, and dress for the weather. Tours are free with $5 Admission/ free for members and children 12 and under, and run for a little over an hour. No pre-registration required.

    Winter Walk tours run the 2nd Saturday of each month, November – March.

    The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster presents its annual Owls of the World event on Wednesday, December 27 at three times, 10, 12:30, and 3. Have you ever seen an owl up close? Join naturalist Marcia Wilson and photographer Mark Wilson as they introduce you to live owls of New England and beyond…including the Great Horned Owl, the Snowy Owl and the Eurasian Eagle Owl. The owls you will see, due to injury or mishap, are unable to survive in the wild. Learn about their field marks and natural history. Everyone is treated to a hooting lesson, as well as tips on attracting and protecting the owls near you. $15 at the door, online $10 for Museum members, $12 for nonmembers.   • Friday, December 8, 11:30 am – The History of Cacao

    Just in time for the Holidays, Master Chocolatier Raymond Hebert presents a History of Cacao from Pre-Columbian Central America to the Palaces of Western Europe. From aphrodisiac, to health food, to confection and back to health food, Cacao has come full circle. In addition, Ray will discuss new archaeological discoveries in North America that show the presence of Cacao in ancient Native American sites in the West that are re-writing the history of the movement of Cacao from Meso-America to other areas on the planet, where it cannot possibly grow on its own. The new evidence being offered suggest that 1000 years ago trade in cacao moved over a 1200 mile range to the North. This Cape Cod Museum of Natural History Lunch and Learn will take place Friday, December 8 at 11:30 am at the Museum, 869 Main Street, Route 6A, in Brewster.

  • Holidays on Cape Cod – Selected Events

    Much is happening in Cape Cod over the next few weeks.

    Through December 30, the Annual Glassblowers’ Christmas takes place at the Sandwich Glass Museum on Main Street in Sandwich Village. In addition to the spectacular glass exhibits the Museum is known for worldwide, this time of year features special trees decorated with hundreds of unique glass ornaments created by some of the region’s foremost glass artists.     On December 1 – 9, stop by the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum on Main Street in Hyannis.Throughout the Museum you’ll see rooms filled with Christmas trees – all festooned with lights and ornaments, and surrounded with decorations and gifts. They’re all waiting for lucky raffle winners to take them home. (Yes, if you have the winning ticket for your favorite tree, it’ll be yours to keep – decorations, gifts and all!)

    Falmouth Holidays By The Sea takes place December 1 – 3, and includes the arrival of Santa sailing into Falmouth Harbor, the Annual Lighting of the Falmouth Village Green with caroling and a downtown Holiday Stroll. Noon on Sunday is kick-off time for the annual Falmouth Christmas Parade. Renowned for being southeast Massachusetts’ largest Christmas parade, highlights include decorated floats, marching bands, live animals, costumed characters and Santa Claus, too. It’s one of the premier Cape Cod events in December – definitely not to be missed!

    Brewster won’t be left out. Brewster for the Holidays is a town-wide celebration is a long-standing tradition in the historic “Sea Captains Town” of Brewster. Festivities begin on Friday morning when local shops, galleries and inns open their doors for a weekend of family-friendly events, activities and promotions. Highlights of Brewster for the Holidays include the Tree Lighting and the Lighting of the Windmill at Drummer Boy Park, blacksmith demonstration and windmill tours, a Holiday band concert, Arts & Crafts Show, and the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History’s Gala Family Party.

    That same weekend you can go to Christmas in Harwich. This weekend in Harwich begins with the Harwich Port Stroll where locals and visitors join together for the tree lighting ceremony and caroling. Also on Friday evening, have your photo taken with Santa (he arrives by fire truck), and take a horse-drawn carriage ride through Harwich Port.     For the wow factor, attend Holly Folly Weekend December 1 – 3 in Provincetown. Holly Folly Weekend, the Provincetown Business Guild’s Gay and Lesbian Holiday Festival, kicks off on Friday with the “Holly Folly Shop Hop”, a great time to peruse Provincetown’s amazing variety of shops and galleries for unique gifts that’ll “Wow” everyone on your list – pets included!

    Throughout the weekend there’ll be events all over town. Open houses, dance parties, drag bingo, a Jingle Bell Bathing Suit Run down the center of town … that’s just a little sampling of the fun and frivolity in P’town on Holly Folly Weekend.

    Chatham gets into the act December 8 – 9 with Christmas in Chatham. Christmas in Chatham will bring you back to days gone by. This weekend is part of a month-long celebration of the Holidays that includes a town light parade, caroling, visits with Santa, music and theater performances, sweet treats, Christmas fairs, open houses and shopping throughout the town.

    The Historic Bass River Holiday Cookie Stroll will take place December 9 from 10 – 3. Tour grand homes in the historic village of Bass River, see the sights, and pick up home-baked cookies along the way. What could be better?? When you purchase a ticket for the Cookie Stroll, your ticket is actually a cookbook with recipes for cookies served at the sites along this two-mile walking tour.  Tickets ($20)  to this popular event are limited and sell out quickly.
