    Butterflies are welcome visitors to our gardens. Join Susie Bowman, teacher/naturalist at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary and avid gardener, at the Polly Hill Arboretum on Thursday, July 5, from 10 – noon, to learn how to attract more of these beautiful insects to your garden. She will introduce the basic needs of butterflies and how to plan or modify gardens to meet these needs. Susie will illustrate with images of island butterflies that frequent specific plants at the Felix Neck butterfly garden. The program will conclude with a walk to the Polly Hill homestead border. Butterfly-friendly plant list included!

  • Tuesday, July 17, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm – Gardens of Martha’s Vineyard

    Join the Polly Hill Arboretum on Tuesday, July 17, from 9 – 4, for a special tour of some spectacular Vineyard gardens.  Begin at the Bressler Garden on Oyster Pond.  This small garden incorporates shrubs, grasses, native plants, and perennials, including 85 lavender plants, on the shore zone at Oyster Pond. From there, proceed to the Geiger Garden in Chilmark (pictured below,) tucked away in the woods, featuring an elaborate water garden.  Lunch will be served at the Polly Hill Arboretum, and from there you will proceed to the Coyne Garden in West Tisbury, located on Looks Pond, the former garden of Nina Schneider, a contemporary of Polly’s.  Then, on to “The Folly,” the Biggs Garden in West Tisbury, hidden off Lambert’s Cove Road.  The large stucco Italianate home features a variety of formal and informal garden areas.   • Friday, June 22, 10:00 am – 3:30 pm – Chatham by the Sea House and Garden Tour

    The Chatham by the Sea House and Garden Tour, sponsored by the Friends of the Eldredge Public Library, will take place Friday, June 22, from 10 – 3:30.  This is a unique chance to tour four fabulous Chatham homes with breathtaking water views and to walk through several special Chatham gardens.   • Wednesday, July 11, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Sandwich Garden Tour

    Visit a number of lovely, private home gardens in Sandwich at your leisure anytime between 10am and 4pm on Wednesday, July 11.  Enjoy light refreshments served overlooking the award-winning Wildflower Garden (below) at the Green Briar Nature Center.  Tickets are $15, and all proceeds benefit the environmental education programs of the Thornton W. Burgess Society and its Green Briar Nature Center.  Tickets, which contain a map and directions to each garden on the tour, are available in advance at Green Briar or on the day of the tour.  Rain date is Friday, July 13.  For further information, call 508-888-6870.

  • Thursday, June 21, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Open Days Garden Tour in Nantucket

    Explore seven private gardens on Nantucket, open to the public to benefit the Garden Conservancy and Sustainable Nantucket. No reservations required; rain or shine.  Special highlights include topiary lilac, a homemade greenhouse, a charming garden shed, and a copper-lined rill among the plants.  Begin at 11 Mill Street, where volunteers will be available to assist and answer questions, or see website, www.gardenconservancy.org,  for additional locations. Most gardens can be reached by walking or biking. $5 per garden. Please note that Moors End Farm, 40 Polpis Road, is also open on this date, offering plants and produce available for purchase (see proprietor Sam Slosek below – photo by Nicole Harnishfeger).

    11 Mill Street is old fashioned and whimsical.  Heathland Gardens at 131 Polpis Road abuts the Middle Moors with a peek at the harbor, and includes many perennial beds connected by stone walks.  Kathryn Young’s Secret Garden at 77 Polpis Road is hidden in the scrub oak and wild shrubbery, and contains five areas of perennials and roses.  The Morash Victory Garden at 41 Shawkemo Road has expanded several times during the past thirty years.  Today, two deer fences protect twenty raised beds.  The MacKenzie Garden at 35 India Street was designed by Nantucket landscape designer Lucinda Young in 2008, with garden designer Kristina Wixted collaborating on the choice of herbaceous flowering plants.  The Tristram Bunker House is nearly 300 years old and was originally located in Nantucket’s early harbor town of Sherburne.  It was moved to its present location (address will be disclosed through the Open Days Directory or at any of the other gardens open the day of tour) in 1756. The Twin Street Gardens at 1 Twin Street is a charming downtown garden behind large hedges.

     

  • Thursday, June 14, 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm – Floral Photography

    The wonders and beauty of nature are often difficult to photograph. If you plan to be on Martha’s Vineyard on Thursday, June 14, from 4 – 6, join photographer Katherine Rose at the Polly Hill Arboretum to improve your photographic skills through a variety of techniques. Instruction will include understanding your camera’s controls and capabilities, the color of light, long shots versus close-ups, and developing a point-of-view for all your shots. Your own eye is the guide for this late afternoon photo foray at the Arboretum. Katherine was garden photographer for the Boston Globe for ten years and has taught photography at the university level and at Featherstone for the last thirteen years.   • Tuesday, June 12, 10:00 am – 11:00 am – Meet the Heaths!

    The rhododendrons are just one branch of an interesting and attractive family tree. Join Polly Hill Arboretum staff for a look at the heath family (Ericaceae) at PHA on Tuesday, June 12, from 10 – 11. There’s more to this family than our 523 (not that we’re counting!) beloved rhododendrons. On this walk we will tour the living collection and meet the relatives, discovering many lesser-known ericaceous plants including native shrubs, evergreen groundcovers, and summer-blooming trees. $5/free for PHA members.  For more information, visit www.pollyhillarboretum.org.

    Enough about the distinguished Federal and Greek Revival homes of Edgartown— have you experienced the tree tour?! Join Polly Hill Arboretum collections and grounds manager Tom Clark for this informative and fun walking tour of the many glorious mature trees of Edgartown. In the midst of the mantle of green that envelops downtown Edgartown, the hydrangeas and picket fences, many unique and fine specimen trees await discovery.   • Tuesdays, June 5 – August 28, 10:00 am – 11:00 am – Guided Wildflower Garden Walks

    Enjoy an informal and informative guided walk along the paths of the award-winning Shirley G. Cross Wildflower Garden on the grounds of the Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen, 6 Discovery Hill Road (off Route 6A) in East Sandwich. Registration is not necessary for this drop-in program to be held each Tuesday, June 5 – August 28, beginning at 10 am and sponsored by the Thornton W. Burgess Society. The garden, conceived and designed by Dr. Shirley G. Cross (pictured below) is a living museum for those interested in the study and use of wildflowers. The one-third acre contains over 300 plants and is maintained by a small group of dedicated volunteers.   • Saturday, June 2, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm – Willow Workshop

    Join award winning professional basketmaker and willow grower Wendy Jensen to learn the “way of the willow.” This Polly Hill Arboretum workshop on Martha’s Vineyard begins with an introduction to the versatile willow plant, Salix. The many uses and the growing of willow will be discussed, then participants will build their own 4-5’ decorative “Flower Tower” from willow rods. Pairing, a willow basketmaking technique will be used to create the flower tower. This openwork of weaving allows the plants to grow through and around the tower. No experience is necessary, although some hand strength is required. Participants should bring hand pruners and garden gloves.
