  • Friday, April 8 – Sunday, April 10 – Bangor 2011 Flower Show

    The Bangor 2011 Flower Show will take place Friday, April 8 – Sunday, April 10 at the Bangor Auditorium  See eight garden displays as they compete for Best in Show and People’s Choice Award, while sampling from over 50 vendor booths to supply all your gardening needs.  This is the 20th anniversary of the show, general admission is a mere $5 at the door, and times are 10 am – 8 pm Friday and Saturday, 11 – 4 on Sunday.  Events will include A Taste of Local Color cooking demonstrations, Get the Honey Bee Buzz, Garden for Your Health seminars from St. Joseph Healthcare, Public Community Gardens presentation, Water Wise Gardening, Sustainable Landscape Design, Creative Container Gardening, Fruit Tree Tips for Amateurs, Kids Programs, Orchid Society Tea Party with the Eastern Maine Orchid Society, True Living Organics, a juried flower show, and more.  Contact Wendy Warren at 207-992-4255, or email wendy.warren@bangormaine.gov, or log on to www.bangorgardenshow.com.   • Thursday, June 16 – Sunday, June 19 – Bonsai in the Bluegrass

    The American Bonsai Society invites you to the 2011 American Bonsai Society Symposium Bonsai in the Bluegrass, to be held at the Fern Valley Hotel and Conference Center in Louisville, Kentucky June 16 – 19.  They have scheduled International Bonsai artists from Europe, Asia, Mexico, and the United States. Ryan Neil, Jonathan Maples, and Doug Philips are among the fourteen workshop leaders. There will be a large number of bonsai vendors on hand to provide a variety of trees, pots, tools, and various other supplies. Also, part of the program includes a terrific bonsai display of well styled trees from across the United States.

    Registration for the Symposium is $295. The registration includes four classes/workshops, your lunch Friday and Saturday, dinner Friday night, banquet Saturday night, access to the demos, vendor area, as well as the bonsai and suiseki exhibit. There is a good rate at the resort for participants, and the hotel looks forward to your arrival.   • Saturday, April 9 – Sunday, April 10 – 28th Annual Cactus & Succulent Show

    The Connecticut Cactus and Succulent Society will hold its 28th  Annual Show and Sale on Saturday, April 9, from 10 – 5, and Sunday, April 10, from 10 – 4, at Naugatuck Valley Community College’s Art & Music Center Cafeteria, Fifth Floor, 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, Connecticut (Exit 18 off I-84).  Free admission.  This is a judged show, with an auction, refreshments, book sale, lectures and demonstrations. Many leading cactus and succulent vendors will be there.  Each day the first 50 families will receive a free plant.  Lectures will cover such topics as Raising Succulents from Seed, Yankee Ingenuity in Horticulture, Flower Show Growing and Preparation, Living Stones, Potting Mixes for Succulents, Hardy Cacti for the New England Garden, and Ariocarpus (pictured below, in an image from www.botanica.uk.net.)  Each lecture lasts approximately 20 minutes, and programs are subject to change.  For more information, log on to www.ctcactusclub.com, or call 860-489-8356.

  • Thursday, March 10 – Sunday, March 13 – Portland Flower Show: The Enchanted Earth

    Join The Portland Company for the annual rite of spring, the 2011 Portland Flower Show. They are a collaboration of green industry landscapers, growers, gardeners and industry retailers dedicated to the continued success of everything about “Gardening in Maine”. Whether you are a property owner, renter, or consumer of fine flowers and vegetables, this is the garden show that will bring it all together for you. They have every aspect of the landscape industry represented here at 58 Fore Street in nearby Portland, Maine. These buildings lend themselves to supporting the new inside the old.   • Tuesday, April 26 through Thursday, April 28 – Flower Show School Course II

    Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts Flower Show School Course II will be held Tuesday, April 26 through Thursday, April 28 at the Holiday Inn in Taunton, Massachusetts. Instructors include Mary Huntoon (Design), Dottie Howatt (Horticulture, Daffodils and Broadleaf Evergreens), and Sandi Joyce (Procedure). It is not necessary to have taken Course I, but all members interested in being a Flower Show Judge must eventually take all four courses and get passing grades on all exams on Flower Show Procedure, Horticulture, and Design.   • Sunday, May 22 – Tuesday, May 31 – Gracious Gardens & Architectural Gems of London, Sussex & Hampshire

  • Tuesday, March 15, 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm – Boston Flower Show Preview Party

    The Boston Parks and Recreation Department will host the Boston Flower & Garden Show Preview Party at the Seaport World Trade Center, from 5:30 – 8 on March 15, 2011. All proceeds will benefit the Boston Parks Department. This event is a great opportunity for both individuals and businesses to support Boston’s parks, from planting new trees to caring for our large, old ones throughout our city’s parks. In addition to helping keep our parks healthy, the Boston Flower Show Preview Party will be a wonderful way to see the flower show: there will be no waiting in lines or working your way through crowds. All guests will receive a gift bag. A Friend or Sponsor will receive a VIP gift bag plus a chance to win fabulous prizes from local businesses.   • Wednesday, March 16 – Sunday, March 20 – The Boston Flower & Garden Show

    Leave behind the gray days of winter and rejoice in the 2011 show, entitled A Burst of Color: Celebrating the Container Garden. Boston’s biggest horticultural happening provides the tools and inspiration to kick off the season in style.  Hours are 9 am – 8 pm Wednesday, March 16 through Saturday, March 19 and 9 am – 6 pm on Sunday, March 20.   A complete schedule of lectures and demonstrations will be posted at www.thebostonflowershow.com, but some highlights include a talk by Tovah Martin on The New Terrarium, a lecture by Ellen Ecker Ogden  on The Complete Kitchen Garden, and a charmingly entitled “Growing Your Groceries in Containers” by Teresa O’Connor and Jayme Jenkins.   The show plays host to amateur competitions as well, coordinated by The Massachusetts Horticultural Society along with The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts.

  • March 6 – March 13 – Philadelphia International Flower Show

    The 2011 Philadelphia International Flower Show, March 6 – 13 at The Convention Center in Philadelphia, will transport visitors to the beautiful City of Light – the capital of art, fashion, food, and love. A blooming “Springtime in Paris” will greet guests with a bucolic park scene along the Seine. Flowering trees, lilacs, roses and borders of lavender will lead visitors through gardens inspired by the Tuileries. In the distance, a daring Moulin Rouge atmosphere will pulse with cabaret performances, spectacular flower sculptures and carousel topiaries.
