  • Wednesday, October 10, 6:00 pm – Friends of the Public Garden Members Reception

    The Friends of the Public Garden invites you to a Members Reception Wednesday, October 10, at 6 pm, at the Union Club, 8 Park Street in Boston.  This is a time to socialize and to hear David Dearinger, member of the Friends Sculpture Committee, talk about the unlikely transience of large public sculptures in Boston, including some of the ones that do (or did) grace Boston’s Public Garden and Commonwealth Avenue Mall. David is the Susan Morse Hilles Curator of Paintings & Sculpture at the Boston Athenaeum, and a specialist in nineteenth-century American sculpture.  The event is free but please rsvp as space is limited.  Email no later than Friday, October 5 at info@friendsofthepublicgarden.org.  Call 617-723-8144 for information.  Your membership can be renewed at this event.  Motor Mart Garage is the reception sponsor – thank you.

  • Monday, October 15 – Wednesday, October 17 – NER Symposium 2012

    The Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. is hosting the 2012 NER Symposium at the Providence Marriott, One Orms Street, Providence, Rhode Island on October 15 – 17.  Barbara May is the Design instructor.  Her subject will be Innovative Exhibition Tables, and she will also teach an allied subject Viva La Difference.  Barbara, whose home state is Massachusetts, is a past president of National Garden Clubs, Inc.  David Robson is the Horticulture Instructor.  His subjects will be A Different Take on Collections and Displays, as well as Orchid Plants.  He will also teach So You Think You Know the Handbook?  David has been involved with NGC programs for a long time, and currently is an FSS Accrediting Chairman.  He is an Extension Specialist at the University of Illinois in the Pesticide Safety Education Program.  This is his first visit to New England.

  • Thursday, June 14, 6:00 pm – 25th Annual Meeting of The Friends of Hayes Park

  • Tuesday, June 5, 7:30 am – 3:00 pm – The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts Annual Meeting

    The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts will hold its Annual Meeting on Tuesday, June 5 at the Holiday Inn, Mansfield, 31 Hampshire Street, Mansfield, Massachusetts.  The day will begin with registration and coffee from 7:30 am.  Registrants may select one workshop to attend from 8:15 – 9, either How to Take Minutes and Write Reports, taught by Nancy Donaldson, GCFM Parliamentarian pro tem, or How to Develop Your Club’s Web Site and Service It, instructor to be announced.  At 10:15 the Acton Garden Club will present Problems with Lyme Disease, and at 10:30, Nancy Brennan, Executive Director of the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, will speak.  President’s Certificates and Club Awards will be announced at 11:30 am, followed by a social hour and boutique shopping.  Lunch will be served at 12:45, and the 2012 Life Members will be introduced.  At 2 pm, there will be a floral design program, with four GCFM floral designers honoring four major visionaries of New England’s cultural landscapes – Frederick Law Olmsted, Fletcher Steele, Charles Eliot, and Beatrix Farrand.  Following a registration report, the meeting will adjourn.   Below, Heidi Kost-Gross is presented the Landscape Design Council Award for Excellence by Joan Butler (right) at the 2010 meeting.

  • Thursday, April 26, 10:30 am – Boston Committee Spring Meeting and Luncheon – Living on Earth

    The Boston Committee of The Garden Club of America invites members of its constituent fourteen clubs to its Spring Meeting and Luncheon on Thursday, April 26, beginning with registration at 10:30 am at The Country Club, 191 Clyde Street in Brookline. The featured speaker will be Steve Curwood.

    In 1970, as a writer for the Boston Phoenix just out of Harvard University, Steve broke the story that Polaroid’s instant photo system was key to apartheid pass system in South Africa. Steve moved on to the Boston Globe as an investigative reporter and columnist and shared the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service as part of the Boston Globe’s education team.  His production credits in public broadcasting include reporter and host for NPR’s Weekend All Things Considered, host of NPR’s World of Opera, producer for the PBS series The Advocates with Mike Dukakis, and creator, host and executive producer of Living on Earth, the prize-winning weekly environmental radio program heard for more than 20 years on public radio stations  and distributed by Public Radio International (PRI) since 2006.

    The cost of the lecture and luncheon is $50, lecture only $25. Please make your check payable to The Boston Committee of the GCA and mail to Jensie Shipley, 40 Dunster Road, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts 02467 before April 19, 2012, and note on the memo portion of your check your Garden Club affiliation. All reservations will be held at the door. Garden Club of the Back Bay members will receive written invitations and a car pool notice in the mail.

  • Thursday, November 17, 10:30 am – 1:30 pm – The Boston Committee of the Garden Club of America Fall Lecture and Luncheon

    The Boston Committee of The Garden Club of America invites its member clubs to the Fall Lecture and Luncheon on Thursday, November 17, featuring Carol R. Johnson, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Carol R. Johnson Associates.  Carol will speak on A Life In The Landscape.  Boston-based landscape architect Carol R. Johnson has spent the last four decades transforming urban spaces, campuses, industrial sites, and neglected waterfronts into vital, celebrated parks and public spaces.  In her lecture she will talk about her life, career, design philosophy, and what it means to be a pioneering woman in the field of landscape architecture.  At the Thursday, November 17 meeting, The Boston Committee will also present the 2011 Boston Bowl to Arabella Dane, past President of the American Horticulture Society and the World Association of Flower Arrangers, as well as a Master Judge for National Garden Clubs and the author of several books on horticulture and butterflies.  The Beautification Award will be presented to Boston University in special recognition of its work planting, paving, and enhancing the Commonwealth Avenue landscape.  Registration will begin at The Country Club, 191 Clyde Street, at 10:30 pm, with lecture and luncheon to follow.  $50 for lecture and luncheon, $25 lecture only, with checks made payable to The Boston Committee of the GCA and mailed to Mrs. William U.   • Wednesday, October 5, 6:00 pm – The Future of Trees in the Public Garden, Boston Common and Commonwealth Avenue Mall

    The Friends of the Public Garden invites all members to a Members Reception on Wednesday, October 5, beginning at 6 pm at the Union Club, 8 Park Street, Boston.  There will be time to socialize and to celebrate Henry Davis, a distinguished arborist who has spent over four decades working with the Friends to care for the trees in our three parks.  Hear Henry’s insights on The Future of Trees in the Public Garden, Boston Common and Commonwealth Avenue Mall.  The event is free to members, but please rsvp, as space is limited.  Email by Friday, September 30 at fopg@gis.net, or call 617-723-8144 for information (or to join, if you have not already done so.)  Membership can be renewed at this event as well.

  • Saturday, August 6, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Garden Tour of Codman Estate

    Historic New England Gardener Ellen Mackey leads a tour through the beautiful Codman Estate Garden in Lincoln, Massachusetts on Saturday, August 6, from 10 – noon.  Hear about the ongoing restoration project to bring it back to its appearance in the 1930’s.  This program is free and open exclusively to Historic New England members, so if you haven’t joined this wonderful organization, now is the time.  For information, visit www.historicnewengland.org, or call 617-994-5934.
