Wreath of the Day 2011 – How We Keep Track

Once our Garden Club of the Back Bay Holiday Wreath order forms are in the mail, the action begins.  Many customers – our favorite customers, naturally – shoot those order forms right back to us with a check, and they specify what they want.  Bow color is of paramount importance, of course, and if the wreath is fully decorated, we want to know about accent color preferences, and whether the wreath is destined to be hung inside or out.  All this information is logged into a database with 58 separate fields.  We can access records back to 2004.  We can tell you how many people want silver bows, how many fully decorated standard wreaths have been ordered, how many people on Marlborough Street will receive a wreath, etc.  We slice and dice the data in many different ways, and are always trying to improve the system.  Forgotten what size you ordered last year?  We can tell you.  Need the delivery between 5 and 6 only?  Can do.  Below is a wreath designed for a darker space, a vestibule which is sheltered but remains cool.  The iridescent clear and milky white balls were a perfect foil for the white ribbon which also had a rainbow sheen.

Wreath of the Day 2011 – How It Begins

Each year, in the fall, The Garden Club of the Back Bay begins preparing for our annual Holiday Wreath Sale.  Once prices are determined, order forms are printed and mailed to everyone who purchased from us the previous year, and to those who purchased two years ago and who did not, for one reason or another, buy again.  After two years, we drop names from our mailing list, since we truly are at capacity.  Notices go out in the bulletin for The Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay, and on this web site.  Word of mouth is our best advertisement.  The classic wreath shown below is designed to be hung outside, since holly is a prominent design feature.  Holly speaks to the spirit of Christmas, yet does poorly when hung indoors, drying out quickly.

Wreath of the Day 2011 – A Thank You to All Our Volunteers

The Garden Club of the Back Bay’s annual Wreath Week has wrapped up, and Co-Presidents Jackie Blombach and Jolinda Taylor, along with Wreath Project Co-Chairs Margaret Pokorny, Francine Crawford, Catherine Bordon, and Elisabeth Lay thank all the volunteers who made this project such a success.  From now through January 1, we will post a picture of the Wreath of the Day, along with a brief description of the wreath and the process, from initial ordering to the last sweeping of the floor.  Since Hanukkah is beginning, we’ll start off with a wreath specially designed to celebrate the season, designed by a first time decorator and new club member.  The sophistication of the wreath proves that a multi-year design apprenticeship is not necessarily a prerequisite.
