    EcoLogic will hold its Annual Benefit on Thursday, November 19, from 6 – 9 pm, at the Boston Center for the Arts, Carol Dean Rehearsal Hall, 539 Tremont Street in Boston.  Come discover how EcoLogic is promoting environmentally-friendly agriculture and making a positive difference for rural farmers in Central America. Plus, experience the taste of New England as local chefs present delectable dishes made with sustainably-grown ingredients.  You will be joined by Frances Moore Lappé, author of Diet for a Small Planet, as well as one of EcoLogic’s field staff, who will speak about how our work with agroforestry is helping both the environment and poor farmers.  Admission: $50 ($40 for non-profit staff) www.ecologic.org/greenag.

  • Sunday, November 1, 2:00 pm – An Infinite Variety of Fruit

    Garden History Consultant Christie Higginbottom’s illustrated program at Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, Massachusetts on Sunday, November 1 beginning at 2 pm will explore the role played by apples at the table and on the farm landscape in the past, and will look at the revival of interest today.  The program is free with admission to the Museum.  For more information, log on to www.fruitlands.org.

  • Sunday, October 25, 10 – 4 – Come See Our Bloomers!

    The Berkshires’ longest running and best-known community event will take place during the first weekend in October, October 3 – 4, from 10 – 5, at the Berkshire Botanical Gardens. An old fashioned, family-oriented community festival with something for everyone, including rides, games, food, music, crafts, giant tag sale, and lots more.   • Through September 30 – Beauty on the Wing: Life Story of the Monarch Butterfly

    Enjoy a unique exhibit combining photography, text, and video celebrating the life story of the Monarch butterfly, now through September 30. The exhibit shares with visitors the poetry and beauty of the Monarch butterfly and expands the viewers understanding of the extraordinary life story of the Monarch.  A wealth of information is provided for the visitor interested in creating a garden designed to support adult butterflies and their caterpillars.

  • Saturday, October 10 – Sunday, October 11, 10 am – 4 pm – Annual Cranberry Harvest Celebration

    Join The A.D. Makepeace Company and the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association for the 6th Annual Cranberry Harvest Celebration, Saturday and Sunday, October 10 – 11, 2009, at A.D. Makepeace Company Headquarters at Tihonet Village, 158 Tihonet Road in Wareham.  10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, admission $2.00, age 6 and under free. Free event parking.

    This fun family event features juried crafters, activities for children, cooking demonstrations, pony and wagon rides, and much more. The highlight of the day is a guided tour of a working cranberry bog. Please, no pets.

    Please join The Herb Society of America (www.herbsociety.org)  for its 62nd Annual Fair, celebrating herbs. See the glorious garden,and shop at tables featuring fresh herbs and wreaths, jams, jellies and vinegars, potpourri, baked goods, books, plants, and more. We will have a raffle and a delicious herb-filled lunch with our Northeast Unit’s signature Lovage Soup. Admission is free; proceeds support herb gardens in the New York area.

  • Through October 11, 8:30 – 4 pm – Botanical Architecture Exhibit

    Students in Smith College’�s Introduction to Architecture: Language and Craft studio, taught by Jim Middlebrook, were asked to reinterpret the spatial language of flowers. Each student chose a flower from the Botanic Garden, then photographed it and analyzed its spatial character. Students built models according to this visual �language.� These forms were used to design a theoretical pavilion for flower display next to Paradise Pond. On display are the photos, models, and pavilion designs. Come to the Smith College Lyman Plant House, Church Exhibition Gallery, 15 College Lane, Northampton, Massachusetts now through October 11 to see the fabulous work created by these very talented students.   • Friday, August 21, 10:00 a.m. – Planting and Growing a Kitchen Garden

    Learn about planting and growing kitchen gardens from the Pilgrims to the present, and find out what past generations relied on to nourish and cure them.     The Town of West Stockbridge will hold its 6th Annual West Stockbridge Zucchini Festival on Saturday, August 8, beginning at 10 in the morning, and running until 9:30 at night.  The location is at the junction of Routes 41 and 102, 1/4 mile west of Exit 1 of the Mass Pike.  Admission is free.  There are activities for kids and adults, including a pet parade, rides and races, a zucchini recipe contest, zucchini decorating, a zucchini weigh off contest, live music and entertainment, games, food booths, and more.  For additional information, call 413-232-0222.
