  • Wright-Locke Farm – Adult Education Program

    Wright-Locke Farm’s education programs for teens and adults are a great way to learn practical skills related to healthy living, small-scale agriculture, and the wonders of nature. All workshops take place on the Farm, 78 Ridge Street in Winchester, or at Saint Eulalia’s Parish (50 Ridge Street- right next door) and are open to individuals ages 14+ unless stated otherwise. Instructors are needed for future workshops. They are always seeking out local experts to lead workshops centered on the following subjects:

    backyard farm animal or beneficial insect care
    organic home gardening (edible and ornamental)
    soil health and composting
    herbalism
    flower arranging
    birdwatching
    foraging (especially mushrooms)
    culinary skills or healthy cooking techniques
    natural fiber and related crafts (especially wool)
    nutrition and health
    food preservation (especially pressure canning, cheese making, meat curing, and home brewing)
    outdoor fitness
    art and photography

    If you or someone you know might be interested in leading an adult workshop, please contact the Education Director, rcarter@wlfarm.org. Please mention your typical rate for a 2-3 hour workshop (with or without material cost estimates), or if you are willing to present as a volunteer. Workshop themes not mentioned above but relevant to our work are open for consideration.

  • Wednesdays, July 14, 21 & 28, 2:00 – 3:30 pm – Flower Arranging

    The Cambridge Center for Adult Education is pleased to announce a series of flower arranging seminars with the acclaimed Cass the Florist.  Ever wonder how to turn a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store or flowers from the garden into an elegant centerpiece? This course will teach you how to create your own beautiful flower arrangements. You will learn the essential elements and principals of floral design while creating three different arrangements. You will learn how to care for flowers to achieve long-lasting freshness, and how to select appropriate containers and flowers for the look you want to achieve. Seasonal flowers and foliage will be used and seasonal themes emphasized. This is a hands-on course and at the end of each class you will have a stylish arrangement to take home to enjoy or give as a gift. A materials fee of $45 (cash or check only) is payable at the first class. Limited to 10.

  • Saturday, February 6, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Sweet Fun: Making Your Own Maple Syrup

    Take a short course on the principles and practice of making maple syrup, from identifying the maple tree to bottling the syrup.  Practical advice on simple procedures and equipment for each step will prepare you for an enjoyable late winter outdoor experience and a sweet reward.  You will go home with a bucket, lid, spile (you’ll find out), and hook – ready to jump into the upcoming season.  This one session event takes place Saturday, February 6, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at the Natick Community Organic Farm, and is sponsored by the Boston Center for Adult Education.  The cost is $40, and you may register on line at www.bcae.org.

  • Monday, December 14, 5:30 – 8:30 pm – The Green Home

    The Green Movement has entered the mainstream and is rapidly becoming an integral part of the environment.  A Green Home (environmentally friendly) house can be more energy efficient than a traditional house.  It can be less expensive to operate, last longer, be more comfortable and be healthier than an existing home.  While many Green Homes are new construction, or require a major retro fit to an existing home, there are some relatively easy and inexpensive techniques that can be employed so you may live in a greener home environment.  This one session course will look at basic green design, green materials and will cover some incentives that can make the process of creating a Green Home environment more palatable.  You will find where to locate green materials, familiarize yourself with basic green terms, and learn the process of making your home green.

    The course is taught by David Kelman at the Boston Center for Adult Education, and costs $51 (BCAE member price $43).  You may register on line at www.bcae.org.  The class will be held Monday, December 14, from 5:30 – 8:30, but if the holiday season precludes your attendance at this time, consider signing up for the second date of Monday, February 22, 2010.

  • Thursdays, October 1 & 8, 5:45 – 7:45 pm – Habitat Gardening

    The Cambridge Center for Adult Education will offer a two session course led by Kim DeAndrade and Ellen Sousa on Habitat Gardening. You don’t need to get in the car and drive somewhere to enjoy nature. By learning to create a backyard habitat, you can create a sanctuary for songbirds, butterflies, and people, right in your own backyard. In this two-session course, for beginners or experienced gardeners, you will learn how and what to plant to attract various kinds of wildlife; how birds, dragonflies, bats, and beneficial insects all provide free pest control; plus other ecological gardening techniques. They will walk you through the process of providing the four elements that wildlife need: food, water, cover, and places to rear their young. They will explain how your property, large or small, can become a National Wildlife Federation-certified backyard wildlife habitat. Beautiful photos of New England habitat gardens will inspire you and wash away any remaining post-winter doldrums. Help create habitat, one yard at a time! Limited to 16.

  • Saturday, September 26, 10 – 12 – Green Roofs: A Climate Solution

    The Cambridge Center for Adult Education offers a seminar in Green Roofs on Saturday, September 26, from 10 – noon.  Green roofs are an inspiring and intelligent solution to environmental problems. By installing vegetation on rooftops, we can enjoy many social and economic benefits for property owners and society as a whole. These include absorbing storm water, reducing building energy costs, improving air quality, extending the service life of roofs, and creating new green space. Apex Green Roofs, a local design/build company, will give an overview of these benefits, design considerations and case studies. We will have a model on hand that shows the different layers of a green roof system. Limited to 16.
