  • Sunday, October 14, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm – Under the Spell of Succulents

    Succulent nursery owner Jeff Moore introduces us to the world of cultivated succulents, offering insight into how we engage with these plants, from the casual enthusiast to collectors and growers. Learn about their use in container gardening, landscaping, bonsai and more, on Sunday, October 14 from 1 – 2 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden. Moore will also showcase the major genera, including aloes, euphorbias, agaves, cacti, crassulas and kalanchoes, with stunning images, and plenty of opportunity for Q&A.

    Co-sponsored with Massachusetts Horticultural Society. Jeff Moore is a long-time succulent enthusiast who has owned Solana Succulents, just north of San Diego, since 1992. He is the author of three books, Under the Spell of Succulents, Aloes and Agaves, and Soft Succulents. All three books will be available for purchase and signing after his talk.   • Saturday, January 28, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Growing Succulents: Agave and Aeoniums

    Join plantsman Rob Gennari of Glendale Botanicals at Berkshire Botanical Garden on Saturday, January 28 at 1 pm for a focused look at growing and overwintering succulents, agaves, and aeoniums indoors. Come warmer weather, this great group of plants make a special statement on a terrace or patio in the summer, but how do these stately specimens make it through winter in the indoor setting? Learn what varieties and cultivars are best for overwintering, how to care for these plants, where to situate them, and seasonal tips for watering and fertilization. After a transplanting demonstration (an art all of its own when dealing with sharp-tipped agaves), participants will go home with a few treasures to grow on.

  • Saturday, February 25, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Hot Scaping with Succulents, Orchids and More

    Investigate the trend of gardening with plants from around the world, in a demonstration/workshop to be held at Berkshire Botanical Garden on Saturday, February 25, from 1 – 3.  Consider agaves and other succulents as low maintenance patio plants that double as houseplants for the winter months. Learn about orchids and how to care for these exotic beauties. Practical information on selection, cultivation, maintenance and overwintering will be covered, with a focus on keeping plants beautiful and healthy. Students will practice dividing and repotting a variety of specimen plants and take home divisions to grow on. Materials are included in the cost of the workshop (BBG members $37, non-members $45), but please bring gloves, pruners, and a cardboard box to transport your plants home.  Additional plants will be for sale following the class.  To register, visit www.berkshirebotanical.org.
