  • Sunday, September 20, 11 am – 4 pm – Urban Agricultural Fair in Harvard Square

    Join Cambridge Local First for its First Annual Urban-Ag fair being held on the very historic site of the first marketplace in Newtowne (1630’s). The 2009 Urban-Ag fair will bring to market some of the most incredible locally grown fruits and vegetables ever seen. Prizes will be awarded for the tastiest, the biggest, the most interesting, and in some cases the ugliest fruits, veggies, baked goods, honey, flowers, preserves, pickles and eggs! Cooking demonstrations from local chefs, gardeners, and “Cambridge School student-growers” will be held throughout the day. Come to sample recipes and/or to stock up on the bounty of our harvest from our local farmers markets, get tips from local experts on composting, community gardening, rain barrels, and bee-keeping! All events are free, open to the public and family-friendly. Kids are encouraged to enter to win Student Prizes in every category!   • Saturday, September 26 – Sunday, September 27, 10 – 5 – 12th Annual Hancock Shaker Village Country Fair

    The Country Fair at Hancock Shaker Village celebrates the bounty of the harvest with agricultural demonstrations, wagon rides, a fabulous Farmers Market, and huge tents full of the work of the best local and regional crafters and artisans. Come out to the farm and see all the Country Fair has to offer! At the Country Fair, vendors fill the Village with delightful fresh produce, finished farm products, and crafts of all sorts. The Farmers Market tents boast vegetables, flowers, maple sugar treats and hand-made cheeses. Artisans have furniture, Shaker style oval boxes, original paintings, candles and hand-woven textiles available for purchase. Plan plenty of browsing time for this amazing marketplace! Don’t miss the Food Tent with area restaurants and brews! Try your hand as a Shaker Baker in our Country Fair Pie Contest! We have both professional and amateur categories, with judging held on Saturday afternoon, September 26th, 2009. Warm up your rolling pins! A display of quilts in the Round Stone Barn ell has become an integral part of the Country Fair each year. About 45 antique and newly made quilts are displayed in this juried show, fine examples of craftsmanship and tradition. You can submit a quilt for exhibition! Daily demonstrations of quilting techniques as well as a hands-on chance for visitors to contribute to a “Linus” quilt that will be donated to those in need.  Adults – $16, Children 13 – 17 – $8, Children under 12 and Hancock Shaker Village Members Free.  For directions and more information, log on to www.hancockshakervillage.org.

    Rides, games, live music, livestock, competitions, craft demonstrations, food, shopping, art show, and awards for homegrown vegetables, fruits, flowers and homemade goodies. And of course, the ever popular dog show. There’s truly something for everybody.

  • Saturday, August 22, 1:30 pm – South Middleborough Grange Fair

    The South Middleborough Grange #337 invites you to attend its 52nd Annual Grange Fair at the Grange Hall, 570 Wareham Street, South Middleborough, Massachusetts.  The Grange Fair is held in cooperation with the Massachusetts State Grange.  All exhibits of fruits, vegetables, flowers, canned goods, baked goods, needlework and crafts will be on exhibit beginning at 1:30 pm.  There will also be a baked goods sale and a bazaar.  A chicken pie supper will be served at 6 pm ($8 adults, $3 children), and at 7:15 there will be an auction of vegetables and flowers.  See the most gorgeous pumpkins, squash, beans, tomatoes, herbs, potatoes, onions – many with ribbons attached!  The South Middleborough Grange was organized in 1913 by 98 charter members, and annual events include clam bakes, dances, suppers and meetings with programs.  The annual agricultural fair is a long-standing tradition for the grange and community, and is symbolic of our agrarian past and continued support of rural and agricultural values.
