  • Friday, April 19, 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm – Blithewold in Bloom: a 2024 American Daffodil Society Show

    Join Blithewold Mansion Gardens & Arboretum and the American Daffodil Society on April 19 at 5 pm to celebrate the dedication of Blithewold’s exhibition space, which will be officially named the Marjorie Van Wickle Lyon Gallery. The address is 101 Ferry Road in Bristol, Rhode Island.

    Get a sneak peek at the glorious display of floral arrangements and specimens in the Visitors Center and throughout the first floor of the Mansion. Guests will enjoy delicious hors d’ouevre from The Kitchen at Blithewold, signature cocktails, and a performance by students at The Ballet Center.

  • Friday, November 4 – Sunday, November 6 – American Daffodil Society Fall Forum

    The American Daffodil Society will host the 2022 Fall Forum and Fall Board Meeting (FBM) in Newport, Rhode Island at the The Newport Harbor Island Resort (formerly known as Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina). The Fall Forum is an annual event that all ADS members and their guests are invited to attend with advance reservations. The event includes the ADS Fall Board Meeting, but it is intended to maximize the education and enjoyment of all members, at an affordable registration fee.

Bettie is an author, founder and editor of the luxury lifestyle website PrivateNewport.com, designer of the Parterre Bench and a national lecturer. As a Bon Appetit editor for eleven years, Bettie featured everyday sophisticates in “Entertaining in Style.” She was a host and creative producer of the PBS series, “The Presidential Palate: Entertaining in the White House.” She has also been featured for garden design in Flower Magazine and now for entertaining, for the third year in a row she is listed on “The Salonniere 100: America’s Best Party Hosts.”

    Bettie’s design talents and love of landscape were put to use in the creation of her Newport retreat on Bellevue Avenue, as well as her new Parterre Bench. Her often toured gardens are documented in the Archive of American Gardens at the Smithsonian Institution and are featured in the Garden Club of America’s Gardens, Private and Personal. Her home in Newport is the inspiration for her most recent coffee table books on lifestyle and design, Private Newport: At Home and in the Garden and Living Newport: Houses, People, Style, which will be available for purchase.

    Her lecture includes the newly restored “Blue Garden” whose unveiling in 1913 at the celebrated Bal Masque still resonates in the annals of Newport social and cultural history. Bettie’s lush images, played across the spectrum of stunning landscapes, captures the social pastimes, rituals and well-earned traditions of a fabled town, now celebrating its 375th anniversary.

    On September 20 from 11 – 2 at Berkshire Botanical Garden in West Stockbridge, learn the ways and whys of selecting, purchasing, planting and designing with hardy flowering bulbs. If you’re catalog-buying, learn what to expect from a supplier. If shopping at the local nursery, discover what to look for when choosing a bulb–and the hints that packaging gives towards its successful culture.     David Burdick, a distinguished plantsman and zealous collector, shows regularly at the American Daffodil Society exhibition. A practicing horticulturist, he has worked at Berkshire Botanical Garden and Windy Hill Farm. David is an engaging teacher, and his latest venture is a specialty plant and cut-flower business, Daffodils & More, in Dalton, MA.

  • Friday, August 17 – Sunday, August 19 – 14th Annual In The Garden Weekend

  • Wednesday, May 19 – Friday, May 21 – 43rd Annual New England Regional Symposium

    The 43rd Annual New England Regional Symposium will take place Wednesday – Friday, May 19 – 21, at The Colony Hotel, 140 Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport, Maine (below).  This program is presented by the Garden Club Federation of Maine, Rebecca Linney, President, and New England Region Director Kathleen Thomas.  The course is accredited by National Garden Clubs, Inc.

    Instructor Dorothy (Dottie) Howatt is a resident of Wilmington, Delaware, is a NGC Accredited Master Flower Show Judge, a Flower Show School/Symposium Horticulture Instructor, and a Daffodil Instructor for the American Daffodil Society.  She holds a BS degree in horticulture from the University of Maryland.  Instructor Bobbi Heenan, a resident of Georgia, is also a NGC Accredited Master Flower Show Judge and a Flower Show School/Symposium Horticulture Instructor.  She has been exhibiting, teaching and lecturing on design for thirty years throughout the United States and South America.

    The deadline for hotel reservations is May 13.  All reservations are to be made directly with the Hotel at 1-800-552-2363, or on line at www.thecolonyhotel.com/maine/.  Register with the Registration Code: New England Regional Symposium in order to receive the NER group rate of $139 + 7% tax (tax amount subject to change), double or single occupancy.  The rate includes free parking and a breakfast buffet each day.

  • Saturday, April 24, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm, and Sunday, April 25, 10:00 am – 4:30 pm – 36th Annual Daffodil Flower Show

    In connection with the previously reported Nantucket Daffodil Festival, the Nantucket Garden Club, Inc. (member of The Garden Club of America), in conjunction with The American Daffodil Society, Inc., will host the 36th Annual Daffodil Flower Show on Saturday, April 24, from 2 – 5, and on Sunday, April 25, from 10 – 4:30.  The title of this year’s event is Island Lights, and the show organizers encourage entries in horticulture, arrangement and photography.  All entrants are encouraged to use www.daffodilusa.org for assistance in identifying specimens.  For more information, contact Sally Nash at 508-228-4912, or email sally@Polpis.com, or Mary Malavase at 508-221-2093, email mmalavase@comcast.net.  No admission charge.
