    Get ready for something special. We’re traveling to Melbourne with no passport, no plane ticket and no luggage. And yet you’ll experience all the sights, sounds and stories with just your laptop, favorite snack and an amazing content creator.

    The tour will last about 60 minutes and will be live-streamed by tour guide Alexander directly from Melbourne. Forget about slideshows or pre-recorded videos, this is a live broadcast and anything can happen!

    While on the tour you’ll be able to see a full screen video of your content creator and their surroundings, interact with them and other travelers through the live chat, see where you are in the world on a map and show your appreciation with a tip.

    If you’re a fan of Tulips then you’ll undoubtedly LOVE this tour! A festival dedicated entirely to Tulips, showcasing a variety of colors and patterns. This is an annual event.

    Tulips are known for their bold colours, symmetry and exquisite shapes. They are a true symbol of unconditional love and, when you’re in a field full of them, it’s hard to not feel loved!

    Founder and owner of Pine House Edible Gardens, Leslie Bennett designs, builds, and maintains edible and culturally resonant landscapes that are beautiful and productive. The gardens she creates provide visual, physical, and cultural inspiration-along with nourishing organic harvests of food, flowers and medicinal herbs. With degrees from Harvard, Columbia Law School, and University College London in the fields of environmental law,cultural property, and social justice, Bennett brings a rare and important perspective to her landscape designs and her business practices. One effort of Pine House Edible Gardens is the Oakland, CA-based Black Sanctuary Gardens project, founded by Bennett in 2018, which actively works to create garden spaces of refuge and beauty in collaboration with Black women and communities.

    Recently, Leslie Bennett received the American Horticultural Society’s 2020 Great American Gardeners Landscape Design Award. She is co-author of The Beautiful Edible Garden, and has been featured in Better Homes & Gardens, Martha Stewart Living, and Garden Design. Joining Bennett in conversation will be Jennifer Jewell, creator and host of the award-winning public radio program and podcast Cultivating Place.

    What can we do to support birds visiting our homes this spring and beyond? In this online NDAL (New Directions in the American Landscape) workshop on February 17 from 1 – 2:15 pm Eastern time, we will take an in-depth look at native plants that you can plant to make your home more bird-friendly to our year-round residents and those stopping over on their migration journeys. In this workshop, we will explore the importance of choosing native plants and how to select native plants to attract specific birds to your yard. Jillian Bell leads, and the fee is $28.   • Thursday, January 21, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Botanical Latin: An Introduction, Online

    Botanical Latin becomes less intimidating once you understand the history and rationale for botanical plant names. Join Jennifer Bakshi for a brief history of botanical terminology from the time of the Roman empire through the development of binomial nomenclature by Carl Linnaeus. Jennifer will provide clarification on the meanings of botanical terms, genus, species and family, how the names are formed and the conventions for writing them. You’ll also learn the correct pronunciation of Latin plant names and explore the hidden meanings of favorite plant names that every gardener should know. This Berkshire Botanical Garden online class will take place January 21 from 6 – 7, and is $11 for BBG members, $16 for nonmembers.     Jenn Bakshi is a designer, manager and teacher. She has built a thriving landscape design business and teaches botanical Latin and botanical history at the New York Botanical Garden. Students appreciate her infectious enthusiasm and are put at ease by her method of breaking down complex ideas into logically simple components. She has lectured for garden clubs and the American Horticultural Society. She recently participated in a podcast on botanical Latin for Joe Gardener, host and producer of the PBS show, Growing a Greener World. Jennifer holds an MBA from Rutgers University, a BA from Beloit College and Certification in Landscape Design and Horticulture from New York Botanical Garden.

  • Wednesday, July 1, 12:00 noon – 1:00 pm – Specialist Bees Webinar

    The monarch butterfly is probably the most famous insect specialist (the caterpillars only feed on milkweed), but did you know that many native bees are also specialists?

    Female native bee specialists or oligoleges, only collect pollen from a narrow range of native plants; this could mean just one plant genus or many genera that belong to one plant family. During this Walk in the Garden Ecological Landscape Alliance webinar on July 1 at noon, Heather Holm will highlight many of these native plant-bee specializations as well as the overlapping habitat requirements of the bees and plants.

    The presentation will also include the threats to specialist bees such as habitat loss and climate change. Heather Holm had an avid interest in natural history and botany at a young age and spent much of her childhood exploring the woodlands and prairie on the family property. She studied horticulture and biology at the University of Guelph and later web programming and digital design at Seneca college, Canada.

    Heather is an award-winning author and nationally sought-after speaker spending much of her time passionately educating audiences about the fascinating world of native bees and the native plants that support them. Her first book, Pollinators of Native Plants, was published in 2014, and her latest book, Bees, published in 2017, has won six book awards including the 2018 American Horticultural Society Book Award. Heather’s expertise includes the interactions between native bees and native plants, and the natural history and biology of native bees occurring in the upper Midwest and Northeast.

    Heather currently lives in Minnesota with her husband. She is a self-employed author, designer, and publisher. For the past few years, she has been assisting with native bee research projects. In her spare time, Heather is an active community supporter, writing grants and coordinating neighborhood volunteer landscape restoration projects. Currently, she is working on three projects with volunteers, restoring approximately ten acres of city-owned land in her neighborhood for pollinators and people.
