  • Tuesday, November 13, 10:00 am – Immortal Garden

    Gloria Lieberman, world-renowned expert on antique jewelry, will trace the different ways that floral motifs are incorporated into jewelry designs. She will cover all different periods and some of the more prominent retailers’ designs. Lieberman’s many television appearances include the BBC’s The Great Antiques Hunt, the PBS series The Antiques Roadshow, and the Boston-based series Chronicle. The program is presented at the South Church Fellowship Hall, 41 Central Street, Andover, on Tuesday, November 13, beginning at 10 am, and is sponsored by the Andover Garden Club.  Free for members of the Andover Garden Club, non-members $10.

  • Tuesday, April 3, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Creating Lush Containers

    The Andover Garden Club will hold a meeting, open to the public, on Tuesday, April 3, beginning at 10 am at South Church, 41 Central Street in Andover.  A $5 suggested donation is requested. Garden designer, writer, and lecturer Donna Lane, speaking on Creating Lush Containers, will demonstrate how to create lush container gardens that will be the envy of the neighborhood. She will discuss color, texture, form, mass, and scale; how to select plants; the best soil for planters; which plants are best suited to containers; professional secrets; and use of accessories.

    Founded in 1927, the Andover Garden Club is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that encourages the study and practice of horticulture, landscape design, and floral design; aids in the beautification of the town of Andover; and helps protect and conserve natural resources.   • Saturday, June 4, 9:00 am – 12:00 noon – Andover Garden Club Plant Sale

    A variety of plants will be offered for sale by the Andover Garden Club on Saturday, June 4, from 9 – noon, primarily perennials that are proven performers in Andover-area gardens.  In most cases, the divisions will be considerably larger than those offered for sale by garden centers.  AGC members will be on hand to offer “how to” advice on planting and growing the plants.The sale will take place at the Old Town House, Main Street in Andover, and admission is free.  For more information call 978-337-7942, or email wrightspaces@comcast.net.  Below is monarda ‘Fireball.’

  • Thursday, October 1, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm – Apples, Apples, Apples

    Spend a morning at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, Massachusetts with Betsy Williams, proprietor of The Proper Season in Andover.  Apples, one of our most ancient and useful fruits, have played important parts in fall and winter celebrations for centuries.  Learn the history of this ancient and important fruit.  Make an apple candle to decorate your seasonal table, a spicy apple pomander, fragrant mast balls, apple-cinnamon ornaments, and two quarts of spicy Autumn Apple Potpourri.  Please bring floral scissors and an apron to class – this is a messy class, so be sure to wear old clothes!  Betsy will be giving a separate class in the afternoon (Glorious Autumn Pot), so plan to have lunch at Twigs and spend the day.  Cost of the Apples, Apples, Apples program is $50 for Tower Hill members, $55 for non-members.  Register on-line at www.towerhillbg.org.

  • Thursday, October 1, 1:30 – 3:00 pm – Glorious Autumn Pot

    Betsy Williams of The Proper Season in Andover will help you plant a pot that captures the glory of autumn in New England during this workshop at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA.  Summer may be over but there are at least two, sometimes three, months of growing season left.  Fill a 12″ pot with brilliant mums, richly colored kales, a miniature evergreen tree, English ivy, and other hardy plant material.  With proper care, your pot will brighten your doorway or patio through November and your evergreen tree will live for many years.  Be sure to bring an apron and floral or garden scissors to class.  Register on-line ($50 for Tower Hill members, $55 for non-members) at www.towerhillbg.org.

  • Saturday, September 12, 7 a.m. – Ride for Green 2009

    The Ride for Green, sponsored by The Trustees of Reservations, is a one-day, 125-mile cycling event dedicated to protecting Massachusetts’ natural landscapes and preserving the health and well-being of our communities through local green initiatives.  One-hundred percent of the proceeds raised through the Ride will go toward The Trustees of Reservations’ land conservation fund so that special places throughout Massachusetts can be protected and preserved for everyone, forever. In Massachusetts, more than 1 million acres of land are in urgent need of protection — together we can change this.

    If you are an avid cyclist who loves the outdoors and you are passionate about protecting our natural landscapes, then please join The Trustees on September 12th. Together we will inspire a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future.  The 125 mile, point to point ride begins in Cohasset and travels through Norwell and Sharon before turning north through Dover, Wellesley, Weston and Concord.  It then heads northeast through Tewksbury, Andover, and Topsfield before finishing at Appleton Farms in Ipswich.  The Ride will pass by several historic sites, including Walden Pond, the Old Manse (Emerson’s former home), and the Old North Bridge.  Cyclists will ride by more than eight Trustees of Reservations properties along the way.  There will be two aid stations on the route to restock and refuel. The ride will finish with a BBQ, beer, and music at Appleton Farms in Ipswich.  We expect over 250 Trustees members and other leaders in conservation at the post ride party to welcome riders and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Trustees’ Conservation Council.  Families are encouraged to attend the post-ride celebration.  For more information log on to www.thetrustees.org.
