  • Wednesday, August 11, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – Plein Air Watercolor Painting in the Garden

    Explore the Berkshire Botanical Garden through the pleasure of watercolor painting with artist Ann Kremers on August 11 from 10 – 1. The class will work outdoors translating the vistas and details of the garden into paintings. Each session will begin with discussion of student work, demonstration, and a helpful assignment. Ann offers encouragement and suggestions throughout the painting sessions to help each person find their way to express the Garden. Beginners and experienced painters are welcome.   • Thursdays, August 8 – August 29, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – The Garden in Watercolors Session II

    Explore the Garden through the pleasure of watercolor painting. We will work outdoors in the garden translating its vistas and details into paintings. Each Berkshire Botanical Garden class will begin in the Center House with demonstrations and helpful assignments. Ann Kremers will offer encouragement and suggestions throughout the painting sessions. Beginners and experienced painters are welcome. In case of rain the Center House offers a lovely venue that is sheltered from the elements.

    Ann Kremers is an artist and calligrapher from Bennington, Vermont.  She teaches watercolor painting, drawing and calligraphy to beginners as well as experienced painters, some of whom work with her on an ongoing basis. She has received numerous commissions for paintings and created calligraphy for institutions and private individuals.

  • July and August, 2017 – Berkshire Botanical Garden Art in the Garden Summer Program

    Berkshire Botanical Garden has opened registration for its Art in the Garden Summer Program, a lineup of five workshops ranging from watercolor painting to drawing nature and the art of cut paper.

    The Garden in Watercolors Session I: En Plein Air Watercolor Painting in the Summer Garden, will be offered four consecutive Wednesdays beginning July 5, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Each class will begin with an introduction and demonstration by instructor Ann Kremers, followed by study of forms, composition, and simple, direct color schemes. Participants are welcome to attend all four classes or individual classes, but all are encouraged to attend the first session, when the basics of watercolor, paint brushes and paper will be explained. Students of all levels are welcome; no previous experience is necessary. This four-session workshop will be repeated beginning August 2, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., and will follow the same curriculum. Fees for the classes are: four sessions $185 / $155 members; individual classes, $50. A materials list is available at berkshirebotanical.org.

    A workshop on the Art of Cut Paper — Scherenschnitte, is offered on Thursday, July 20, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Taught by Pamela Dalton (pictured below,) this hands-on program includes instruction on the simple techniques of cut paper. Students will create multiple Scherenschnitte, executed in the style of the Pennsylvania German tradition drawing on farming and gardening themes from the 19th century. The instructor will also share paper cutting from a variety of cultures and historic periods. Fees for the class are $85 / $75 members. View a materials list at berkshirebotanical.org.     Basic Drawing: Observing Nature with Graphite Pencil, a workshop taught by Carol Ann Morley, is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, August 14 and 15, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Students will learn how to look at the natural world and give shape and definition to their subject through graphite shading techniques. This workshop is open to any level of student from beginner to those with drawing skills. Fees for the workshop are $250 / $225 members.

    Carol Ann Morley will also instruct the workshop, Drawing in Nature: A Visual Narrative. This consecutive three-day program begins Wednesday, August 16, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and focuses on how to present an image of nature to achieve an interesting drawing that engages the attention. Students are encouraged to bring several natural subjects to choose from as the focus of their drawing, and will work in graphite during design stages, but can select a color medium for a final rendering. Open to students of all levels. Fees for the workshop are $315 / $290 members

    Seeing and painting the garden en plein air is the subject of this series of Wednesday classes, to be held at the Berkshire Botanical Garden July 9 – 30 from 10 – 1. Students of all levels are welcome in one or all sessions; no experience is necessary. The first session will focus on drawing forms, finding compositions and simple, direct color schemes. Composition will be stressed. Each class will begin with an introduction and demonstration by the instructor and then move into the garden to paint, with the instructor circulating among the students to provide input and answer questions. You can attend the whole series or pick and choose individual classes; however, everyone is encouraged to attend the first meeting, when the basics of watercolor, paint, brushes and paper will be explained. Individual classes are $45. BBG members may pay $145 for the series, and nonmembers may register for the entire series for $175.   • Friday, August 26, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Nesting Project: Connecting Nature with Art

    Berkshire Botanical Garden, 5 West Stockbridge Road in Stockbridge, is branching out.  Consider the great outdoors your artist studio and learn how to make sculpture using twigs, sticks, string, leaves, moss, and other natural materials. The project: think like a bird and use imagination and creative engineering to build a nest for your yard or garden. The project focuses on constructing natural materials without glue, tape, staples or hammer and nails, rather like a bird. Take a tour of the Berkshire Botanical Garden’s Bird Habitat Exhibition, watch a demonstration, collect materials on the ground of the garden and then join artist Ann Kremers for a delightful nest building exploration. Take home your nests and the skills to construct other environmental art projects in your own back yard. This workshop is appropriate for adults or children 10 and up accompanied by an adult.  The program will be held Friday, August 26, from 10 – noon.

    Ann Kremers is an artist living in Bennington, Vermont. She focuses on watercolor, drawing and teaches environmental art to all age groups. She has led many workshops thorough out northern Berkshire County connecting people with nature through art and has taught at the Clark Museum and in area schools.     View the summer garden with an eye for color, mood, texture and painting in this series of classes at the Berkshire Botanical Garden beginning Tuesday, July 12, from 10 – 1, and continuing through Tuesday, August 2. Learn the basics of composition and color through the medium of watercolor. Each class will begin with explanation and demonstrations by the instructor. Most of each session will be devoted to painting with the instructor providing input and responding to questions. No prior experience is necessary and beginners are welcome. You may attend the whole series or pick and choose individual classes. However, everyone is encouraged to come to the first meeting when the basics of watercolor, paint, brushes and paper will be explained.
