  • Friday, December 17 – Sunday, December 19 – Winter Solstice with The Trustees

    The Trustees are celebrating the Winter Solstice on December 17, 18, and 19 at a number of different venues. Appleton Farms in Hamilton and Ipswich is the site of a Winter Solstice Family Fun, and Fruitlands Solstice Stroll in Harvard  features a candlelit walk followed by hot chocolate and s’mores around the outdoor firepit. The deCordova Museum presents a solstice clay candle lanterns workshop. Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich is where you’ll get to participate in a Winter Solstice Hike.  Powisset Farm in Dover will hold a Winter Solstice Supper,  and for those near Governor Hutchinson’s Field in Milton, enjoy a fire dance performance at Solstice Illumination Night.   • Fridays – Sundays, August 27 – October 3 – Nature: A Walking Play

    This immersive and family-friendly telling of Emerson, Thoreau, and their mutual love of the natural world returns to The Trustees. Offered at three properties throughout the state, audience members walk along with the actors as the play’s scenes unfold throughout the grounds of each property. Performances are filled with music, song, story, and celebration as scenes unfold around them in this feast for the senses. The play will be performed August 27 – September 6 at Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, on September 10 – 19 at Appleton Farms in Ipswich, and September 24 – October 3 at Francis William Bird Park in Walpole.   • Thursday, December 17, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm – The World of Maple Sugaring Webinar

    As winter approaches the world of maple sugaring comes alive. Lines and buckets are prepared, sugar maples are examined, bottles and caps are ordered, and the dreams of nights in the sugar shack begin.

    During this December 17 Tower Hill Botanic Garden webinar, beginning at 6:30 pm, instructor Kyle Jacoby will walk you through the history of maple sugaring, how syrup is made today, the differences in syrup types, and tips for starting to make it at home. This webinar is perfect for both those who want to learn about this special treat or begin their own maple sugaring journey.

    Kyle Jacoby is the Manager of Adult Education at Tower Hill Botanic Garden. Kyle has taught and managed environmental programs for 13 years. Notably in the world of maple sugaring, Kyle managed the maple syrup production and education at Appleton Farms in Ipswich, MA and works with local sugaring farms during the season.

  • Thursday, June 13, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Sweet and Savory Strawberries

    It’s strawberry season at Appleton Farms in Hamilton and Ipswich, and we’re celebrating the arrival of this favorite crop by cooking up all things strawberry in the kitchen.  Our workshop begins with a brief walk out to the fields (weather permitting), learning more about berries while sampling and harvesting some for our class.  We’ll then head to the kitchen to prepare a delicious menu of sweet & savory strawberry recipes while covering traditional cooking skills and techniques along the way.  Class includes hands-on cooking, professional chef instruction, printed recipes, and a ‘strawberry celebration’ dinner at the end of the evening.  BYOB beer & wine allowed.

  • Sunday, June 9, 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm – Ravenswood Park Property Hike

    Did you know there is more to the Trustees in the Northeast than just Crane Estate and Appleton Farms? Let them show you around properties you might not have heard of to expand your hiking repertoire and learn more about the natural history of the area.

    Ravenswood Park is an expansive preserve that offers over 10 miles of trails through spectacular natural environments. If the weather cooperates, the native sweetbay magnolias may be blooming in the Great Magnolia Swamp!

    Bring water and dress for the weather to maximize comfort. Unless otherwise communicated, Neighbor Property Hikes will convene at that property, not at Crane Estate. 

    Weather cancellation policy: All trips will take place rain or shine with the following exceptions: If there is a high confidence that thunder and lightning will be present, we may cancel a trip up to one hour in advance. If the forecast is for steady and heavy rain all day, we may decide to cancel by 3pm on the day before the event. If either of these happens, all registrants will be notified by email and/or phone with as much notice as possible.

  • Friday, December 7, and Saturday, December 8, 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm – The Farm Nisse

    The Nisse – a farm elf from Scandinavian folklore – will visit Appleton Farms  in Hamilton and Ipswich on December 7 and 8 from 4:30 – 5:30 pm. While we wait for the Nisse to awake from her slumber in the hayloft, there will be children’s holiday crafts, cookies and hot chocolate, and carols. Upon her decent from the hayloft, the Nisse must be offered her porridge. If the porridge isn’t just right, she will play tricks on the farmers and tie the cows tails in knots! If she likes the porridge, she will let us help spread the magic seeds bringing good fortune to the farm in the year ahead.

    Registration is by the family- if you have 6 or more in your family, please register 2 families as we want to have enough cookies and hot chocolate for all. $24 per family for members of The Trustees, $30 for nonmembers. Register at http://www.thetrustees.org.

  • Wednesday, August 29 or Wednesday, September 26, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Farm to KITCHEN Cooking Class: Classic Greek Flavors with Chef Jody Adams

    The Trustees of Reservations and The KITCHEN at the Boston Public Market are honored to welcome James Beard Award Winner and Top Chef Masters contestant Chef Jody Adams for a very special hands-on cooking experience. In Chef Adams’ class, attendees will learn the traditional Greek cuisine that has people lining up for her newest restaurants, Saloniki, in Boston and Cambridge. She will also draw on techniques and flavors of her other popular restaurants, Trade, Porto, and formerly, Rialto. Join us to cook side-by-side with one of Boston’s most prestigious chef heroes who is committed to highlighting New England’s local farmers, fishermen and artisans on her menus.

    In this lively, hands-on cooking class you’ll learn how to utilize the produce and products of the farmers and artisans of the Boston Public Market. Guided by Chef Adams you’ll create an exciting three-course meal based on seasonal, local food, and increase your comfort in the kitchen through new knife skills, techniques, and flavor profiles.

    This in-depth look at Appleton Farms’ dairy operation will take you from the pastures to the cheese kitchen viewing area – and everywhere in between – to learn about how we make our delicious farm fresh cheese. Our cheesemaker will show the process in action and answer any questions you have. Finish up with a sampling of some of our products. The Sunday, September 4 program meets at our Dairy Store at 3:30 pm and there is no need to pre-register. Become a Trustees member at the farm and day of and come on the tour without charge!     On Saturday, July 2 from 9 – noon, join The Trustees and the North American Butterfly Association for an annual summer butterfly count at Appleton Farms, in Hamilton and Ipswich, Massachusetts. Appleton’s wet meadows and farm fields provide important habitat for many common and uncommon butterfly species. Trustees Ecology Program Director Russ Hopping and Massachusetts Butterfly Club President Howard Hoople will orient the group with an Introduction to butterflies before setting out for the count. Participants should wear long pants, sunscreen and proper clothing to be walking through fields of tall grass. Bring a lunch.   • Sunday, April 12, 11:00 am – 1:30 pm – Farmstead Cheese Tour

    Pull on your boots and head out to Appleton Farms in Ipswich to learn about cheese production from start to finish. Set off where cheese making begins with milk collection in our dairy barn. Then move on to our cheesemaking kitchen, and wind up in the farm kitchen for some hands-on country cooking. We’ll cover the basics of cheese making and make our own ricotta along with a couple of signature dishes that incorporate some of Appleton’s farmstead cheeses. This April 12 workshop, from 11 – 1:30, includes the farm tour, hands-on instructional workshop, printed recipes, and a light meal.
