  • Thursday, October 29, 5:30 pm – Landscapes for Art with Ann Kearsley

Come to The Landscape Institute, 30 Chauncy Street, Cambridge, MA on Thursday, October 29 to hear Ann Kearsley speak about her exhibition of landscape design work, including drawings and photographs that document the process from foundations to cranes to finished installation of built landscapes and of sculpture installations.  Ann Kearsley MLA, MLAUD, principal/owner of Ann Kearsley Design, has been designing landscapes for art since 1996. Her lecture will discuss the challenges of designing landscapes for modern sculpture, using examples of her work that include sculpture by Tony Smith, Mark di Suvero, Willem de Kooning and others. Sculpture has been placed in landscapes for millennia. For centuries, figurative forms in public landscapes and private gardens communicated specific meanings through formal expressions of shared cultural iconographies. In the 20th century, as the imagery of abstract art moved away from mainstream culture, the role of sculpture in designed landscapes began to change as well, creating an opportunity for our consideration of the relationship between sculptural and landscape forms.

This lecture is free and open to the public.  The exhibition will continue through December 3, 2009.  The reception begins at 5:30, the lecture at 6:00.  Please rsvp to landscape@arnarb.harvard.edu, since seating is limited.  For directions and parking information, log on to www.arboretum.harvard.edu.

  • Thursdays, November 5 – December 17, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm – Drawing the Garden Landscape

The Landscape Institute of Boston Architectural College offers a degree in Landscape Architecture, but for those who are interested, certain courses may be audited at a lower price, without receiving academic credits.  One such course is Drawing the Garden Landscape, taught by Clare Walker Leslie.  This module gives students an opportunity to gain confidence and experience in their drawing skills.  Classes focus on methods for using pencil, pen and ink, colored pencil, and watercolor pencil.  Particular attention will be paid to techniques for drawing individual plant specimens, group assemblages, plants in a landscape composition, perspective, walls, paths, water, buildings, and people in a garden setting.  The goal is to learn how to draw better so that clients (or your loving family) can more clearly understand proposed garden designs.  Emphasis will be on gardens in different seasons and conditions.  Attention will be paid to the specific needs of each student.  Several drawing sessions will be conducted outdoors.  Each student is required to produce and present a final drawing suitable for presentation to a client or inclusion in a portfolio.  The audit fee is $950 (compared to $1,380 if you wish to accrue credits).  Course number VS026.  For more information, log on to www.arboretum.harvard.edu/programs.

  • Wednesday, August 19, 7:30 p.m. – Plant Hunting in Asia with Dan Hinkley

Trekking through remote forests in exotic destinations in search of rare and wondrous plants may seem like a Victorian pursuit, but not to plant explorer Dan Hinkley. This award-winning horticulturist, nurseryman, and garden writer has traveled the globe to bring unusual plants to North American gardeners. While he experiences plant exploration as a joyous adventure, he also sees it as an imperative. He emphasizes, “We need to know what is surviving at this moment in time on the planet.” For this program The Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury has asked Hinkley to share his breathtaking pictures and plant hunting adventures in Taiwan, Japan, and Korea to coordinate with their plant collections and Polly’s historical interest in Asian plants. 7:30 pm. $10/$5 for PHA members. Sponsored by Donaroma’s Nursery.  For more information, contact Karin Stanley at 508-693-9426, or email her at karin@pollyhillarboretum.org.

  • Wednesday, August 12, 7:30 p.m. – Bringing Nature Home

Can gardeners make a difference for the future of biodiversity in our communities? Come to the Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury, Massachusetts for the Annual David H. Smith Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, August 12, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Yes we can! In this talk based on his book, Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens, Douglas Tallamy, professor and chair of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, reveals the importance of the interaction between plants and insects in our own backyards.

Tallamy will illustrate the unbreakable link between native plant species and native wildlife: when native plants disappear, native insects disappear, impoverishing the food source for birds as well as other animals. Learn how as gardeners we can help sustain this link by planting native species that support our native wildlife population. Book signing after lecture. $10/$5 for PHA members. Begins at 7:30 pm.  Sponsored by SBS: the Grain Store.  For more information contact Karin Stanley at karin@pollyhillarboretum.org, or call her at 508-693-9426.
