  • Sunday, August 12, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Meditations in Ink: Asian Brush Painting – Orchids

    Students in this Massachusetts Horticultural Society workshop on August 12 from 10 – 4 will learn the art of Asian Brush Painting and focus on the orchid. This workshop is for those interested in learning and using the traditional tools and techniques of Asian Brush Painting (aka “sumi-e” in Japan). Through step-by-step instructor demonstrations and hands-on brushpainting projects using the “Four Treasures” (bamboo brushes, handground ink, inkstone, and rice paper) you will explore this ancient and elegant art and leave class with two completed works.

    NO ART EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. Against a backdrop of meditative music, this workshop is your doorway to the exciting yet contemplative world of Asian art!

    Bruce Iverson is an artist who has specialized in Asian Brush Painting since 1972 with master brush painters Jean Shen, Ning Yeh, and I-Hsiung Ju. He has exhibited in group and juried shows throughout the United States and has had several one-man shows in New England. He has traveled to China for a deeper understanding of the context of brush painting and is a juried member of the New Hampshire Art Association. His work is grounded in a three thousand year old tradition in which the tools, techniques and philosophy of this Asian art form have had a lifelong resonance.   • Saturday, August 11, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Native Botanical Cyanotype Workshop

    In this hands-on New England Wild Flower Society workshop at Nasami Farm in Whatley on Saturday, August 11 from 10 – 2, we will explore the history and methodology of botanical cyanotype prints and create our own. Cyanotypes are an early photographic process using light-sensitive materials and sunlight to create unique and striking ‘blue prints’ or ‘sun prints.’ The process lends itself beautifully to the documentation of botanical specimens, both scientifically and artistically.   • Saturday and Sunday, August 11 – 12, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Heirloom Tomatoes: Botanical Drawing in Color

    Heirloom tomatoes are the jewels of summer. In this two-day workshop at Tower Hill Botanic Garden on August 11 & 12 from 10 – 4, join botanical artist Helen Byers to draw their fascinating forms, rich colors, and surface and interior textures in detail. Helen’s demos, tips, and personalized instruction will guide students in practicing a technique of botanical drawing that combines colored pencil and watercolor.

  • Wednesday, August 8 – Friday, August 10, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Drawing Daylilies in the Garden

    Capture the beauty of daylilies and other flowers that grow at Berkshire Botanical Garden. Sit amongst the daylilies and bring their beauty to life on the page of your sketchbook. Bring along a camera to document what you draw and see. In the classroom explore ways to enhance your field studies, bring more depth to petals and leaves and record their vibrant colors applying a variety of graphite and colored pencil techniques. Create a final page of garden flowers.

  • Saturday, July 28 & Sunday, July 29, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm – Drawing Birds in Their Habitats

    This two day New England Wild Flower Society workshop taught by Dorie Petrochko will introduce students to the fascinating world of drawing and painting birds. We will learn how to observe the structure and form of various bird species by field-sketching birds. A small field-painting kit with graphite pencils, micron pens, a small watercolor set, and colored pencils is all you will need to render successful bird studies. Hands-on demonstrations and individual guided instruction and critiques will be offered. Participants will produce a finished portrait of the bird of their choice in its habitat. The sessions will take place at Garden in the Woods on July 28 and 29 from 10:30 – 2:30. $100 for NEWFS members, $115 for nonmembers. Materials not included.     Join botanical artist Helen Byers on July 28 and 29 from 10 – 4 in this two-day Tower Hill Botanic Garden workshop to celebrate summer flowers. Analyzing the forms of selected blooms from life and under magnification, we will create detailed watercolor studies of their botanical features and “personalities.” Helen’s demos, tips, and personalized instruction will guide students in the practice of painting in layers, using wet-into-wet, dry-brush, and masking techniques to achieve luminous color, challenging textures, and fine details.

  • Sunday, July 15, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm – Encaustics Painting Workshop

    In this one day Tower Hill Botanic Garden workshop on July 15 from 11 – 3, we will cover the basic techniques for creating an art piece using encaustic paint (pigmented beeswax). Create a series of small artworks with collaged paper, found objects, photographs, image transfer, incised and carved line drawings and fusing techniques. Supplies are included, but please bring any papers, photographs, photocopies or other objects you would like to use in your artwork. Beginners welcome.

    Instructor Suzanne Hauerstein (a piece of her encaustic art is pictured below) is a studio artist and art instructor based in Central Massachusetts. She began working with encaustics in 2005 after a decade long career as a ceramic artist. Her works have been included in museum and gallery exhibitions in Texas and throughout the east coast, including Brooklyn, New York, Mystic, Connecticut and multiple locations throughout Rhode Island and Central Massachusetts and the Greater Boston area. $75 for Tower Hill members, $85 for nonmembers.   • Sunday, July 8, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Floral Still Life Painting

    Working from direct observation, take time to study and paint a beautiful floral arrangement. Whether you’re an experienced artist, or just interested in experimenting with acrylic paint, this Tower Hill Botanic Garden class on Sunday, July 8 from 1 – 4 will be a fun, guided afternoon of creative exploration. All materials included in the fee ($45 for Tower Hill members, $55 for nonmembers).

    Instructor Julianne Martin is an artist whose work consists of paintings that celebrate nature and experience. Made from acrylic paint, graphite and glitter, Julianne’s work presents a convergence of delicate whitewashed rainbows, stained emblems of animal spirits, impressions of the night world, and enlivened botanical patterns. Julianne lives in Boston, where she offers art lessons, art parties and workshops. She also teaches art to children and adults at Brookline Arts Center. Julianne received her BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. She has an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design at the Fine Arts Work Center.     Explore the world of botanical art in this Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens course designed especially for the beginner.  Sarah Roche guides you through structured exercises, projects and demonstrations, exposing you to the basic techniques of botanical drawing and watercolor painting.  The four day class will be held at the Wellesley Community Center  Monday through Wednesday, June 4-6, from 9:30 – 3:30, and on Thursday , June 7, from 9:30 – 12:30.
