    The Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens has scheduled a three day program at the height of sunflower season, July 29 – July 31, 9:30 – 3:30, which will lift your spirits.  Van Gogh’s iconic paintings of sunflowers have inspired many artists to capture their strength and vibrancy.  Don’t be daunted by the complexity of their spiral centers.  Join this workshop with Elaine Searle to explore the sunflower from all angles.  Create a study sheet or small painting filled with sunshine.  You may discover that the backs of the blooms are just as fascinating as their faces.  Friends price $340; non-members $425.     Master botanical composition with the Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens in a three day course August 5 – 7 at the Visitors Center of the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens.  Are you stymied when attempting to capture the beauty and grace of your favorite summer flowers?  Whether trying to portray a single flower or a garden bouquet, discover the nuance of botanical composition with Catherine Watters.  Analyze elements of composition with a focus on shape, structure and negative space, and then paint your composition.  Catherine will also discuss mixing colors as well as balancing light and shadow to make your painting come to life.  $395 for Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens, $495 for nonmembers.   • Tuesday, July 22, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm – Tablet Computers as a Tool

    The Friends of Wellesley Botanic Gardens have arranged for Elaine Searle to help you look objectively at the role of the iPad and similar devices as tools for the botanical artist, and to evaluate some of the most interesting apps available for reference and recording.  Discover the difference controlled lighting can make to your plant reference photography.  Elaine will also cover usage etiquette and the possible pitfalls of over-reliance on these devices.  While the focus will be on iPad usage, many of the concepts are easily transferrable to other tablets which have built-in cameras.  The class will take place at the Visitors Center of the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens on Tuesday, July 22, from 9:30 – 3:30.  Wellesley Friends – $85; non-members – $110.  Sign up by calling 781-283-3094 or email wcbgfriends@wellesley.edu.

  • Sunday, June 1, 9:00 am – 12:00 noon – Painting the Secret Garden: A Watercolor Workshop at the Codman Estate

    Join Historic New England Site Manager and watercolor painter Wendy Hubbard on Sunday, June 1 at 10 am for a morning of family-friendly watercolor painting. Paint pictures inspired by the Codman Estate’s secret garden in full bloom. Fun for dabblers of all ages. Appropriate for ages four and up; kids must be accompanied by grownups, who are also encouraged to get creative and messy.

    The Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens will sponsor a class on seven consecutive Thursdays, May 1 – June 12, from 1 – 4 pm on campus, entitled Watercolor Landscapes.  Susan Swinand teaches adults at all levels of experience to solve those awkward problems of painting on location: changing natural light and cast shadows, elements of atmospheric and linear perspective, color and composition and all the techniques you’ll need for success.  Learn to use ordinary elements of nature for expressive purposes.  Follow your own interests in the classroom or work on site in the gardens.  One-on-one instruction and group critiques further your progress as you explore what makes a painting work.   • Saturday, November 9 and Sunday, November 10, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm – Seeds and Gourds: Botanical Art in Colored Pencil

    In this two-day Tower Hill Botanic Garden weekend workshop, late-fall seedpods and colorful gourds will be your inspiration as botanical artist / illustrator Helen Byers demonstrates how to draw and paint them using colored pencils. The class will take place Saturday and Sunday, November 9 and 10, from 11 – 4, and costs $90 for THBG members, $100 for nonmembers.
