Through December 12 – Environmentally Friendly: Works on Wood by Tova Speter
Somerville artist Tova Speter uses found wood as a conduit to artistic exploration. The grain serves as her guide on a journey into the lines, shapes, and flow of the composition of the particular piece. In transforming scrap wood into works of art, she conveys the idea that everything has an inherent beauty that will shine through when viewed from a new perspective. Her work is currently on display in the Hunnewell Building Lecture Hall at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, through December 12. For hours and directions, log on to www.arboretum.harvard.edu. The artist will donate a portion of the sales from this exhibition to Spontaneous Celebrations in Jamaica Plain.

Join the artists participating in the Arnold Arboretum’s current exhibit Plein Air in the Arboretum: Paintings by the NHPleinAir Artists for a short presentation and Q&A session on Saturday, August 14, from 1:00–3:00pm.
Since last fall, intrepid painters from NHPleinAir have been making regular pilgrimages to the Arnold Arboretum, braving the elements—and the traffic!—to realize their collective and individual visions. The works in this exhibition feature the trees and landscapes of the Arboretum captured en plein air (“in the open airâ€) throughout the seasons. The group was founded in 2004 and has over 300 members who paint outside regularly throughout New England. The show will be in the Hunnewell Building Lecture Hall from August 7 – September 19, 2010. For more information, log on to www.arboretum.harvard.edu.

Saturday, March 13, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – The Sacred Forest Opening Reception
The works in Sacred Forest convey the power and spirituality that we feel in the presence of an ancient or immense grove of trees.
Inspired by a concern for the environment, and motivated by mounting evidence that trees around the world are increasingly at risk, Lynn Avery has created a series of powerful, large-scale paintings that speak both to trees’ immense power and their uncertain future.
The Sacred Forest is Avery’s way of promoting public awareness of the issues surrounding the future of our natural world. The opening reception for the exhibit will take place Saturday, March 13, from 1 – 3 pm in the Hunnewell Building of the Arnold Arboretum, 125 The Arborway, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. The reception is free, and you may find more information by calling 617-384-5209, or by emailing marc_devokaitis@harvard.edu. Directions to the Arboretum may be found at www.arboretum.harvard.edu.

The Arnold Arboretum invites you to a reception with artist Anthony Apesos on Saturday, February 20, from 1 – 3 pm, at the Hunnewell Building Lecture Hall in the Arnold Arboretum. The exhibit, Summer in Winter, will be on view January 9, 2010 through March 3, 2010, and Mr. Apesos will also give an artist talk on Thursday, February 25, from 6:30 to 8 pn. For more information log on to www.arboretum.harvard.edu.

A perfect antidote to winter weather, Apesos depicts the wide-ranging Arboretum landscape in deep summer, from the rugged outcrops of Hemlock Hill to the meadows from which dawn redwoods spring.
Anthony Apesos is a professor of painting and art history at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. His paintings are inspired by such landscape artists as George Inness, John Constable, and Samuel Palmer.
