Saturday, April 27 – Monday, April 29 – Art In Bloom

Once again, garden clubs (including The Garden Club of the Back Bay) and professional designers from around New England will create floral arrangements inspired by works of art.  Art in Bloom 2013 includes the transformed William I. Koch Gallery with its collection of 16th and 17th century European paintings and Hanoverian silver as well as a spectacular new display of the Museum’s prized Korean collection.  Special events include an illustrated lecture and floral demonstration as well as flower arranging master classes presented by Shane Connolly, the heralded British floral designer and author.  Space is limited.

The Shane Connolly Master Classes will take place Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28, from 10:30 – 12:30.  These are hands-on workshops, and are priced at $200 each.  Mr. Connolly will also present, on Monday, April 29 at 10:30 am, the lecture and demonstration entitled A Year in Flowers: Inspiration for Everyday Living, followed by a book signing ($55.)

For those who missed her at our Club’s March meeting, Maureen Bovet will present The Gardens of New York on Sunday, April 28 from 3 – 4, and past GCBB lecturer Suzanne Mahler will present Designing a Garden for All Seasons on Monday, April 29, also from 3 – 4.

Saturday & Sunday, April 28 & 29, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm – Paula Pryke Master Classes

British floral designer Paula Pryke is known worldwide for her cutting edge, innovative floristry.  An inspiration to novices and experts alike, she speaks across the US and in Europe and Japan.  Her clientele includes celebrities, royalty, film set designers, and luxury cruise lines.  She has run an internationally renowned flower show school since 1994 and has written 14 best-selling books on flowers.  Her newest book, Flowers Every Day, was published in February 2012.  She will hold two separate master classes at The Museum of Fine Arts as part of this year’s Art in Bloom.  These hands-on flower arranging instruction sessions will take place Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29, from 10:30 – 12:30, with each class size limited to 22.  $200 for each session, and you may register on line at www.mfa.org.


Monday, April 30, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm – Paula Pryke: Cutting Edge Floral Design

Join the MFA for an Art in Bloom floral demonstration and lecture with British floral designer Paula Pryke, who, as we detailed above, is known world-wide for her cutting-edge, innovative floristry. Her Master Classes are small and are priced accordingly, but you may see her demonstrate her skills while she lectures at the modest price of $35 on Monday, April 30, from 10:30 – 12:30.   She has run an internationally renowned flower school since 1994 and has written 14 best-selling books on flowers; her newest book, Flowers Every Day, was published in February 2012. Coming soon! Celebrate spring at this annual festival of fine art and fresh flowers. See the MFA’s galleries transformed by almost 70 extraordinary arrangements inspired by magnificent works of art. Art in Bloom is free with Museum admission; no reservations are required to see the floral arrangements and participate in most of the programs. Saturday, March 31, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Sunday, April 1, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm – Norwood Evening Garden Club’s Art in Bloom

Norwood High School art students will once again join the Norwood Evening Garden Club to present Art in Bloom 2012. This is the eighth annual event where club members create floral displays to interpret the work done by students in Drawing and Painting III and 2D Digital Design III classes.

The historic George H. Morse House at 1285 Washington Street in South Norwood will host this year’s Art in Bloom on Saturday, March 31 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 1, from 1:00-5:00 p.m. The public is invited. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

Friday, March 2 – Sunday, March 4 – Needham’s Art in Bloom 2012

See student artwork with floral interpretations in two venues in Needham.  On Friday, March 2, from 2 – 4 pm, exhibits will be on display at Needham High School, in the Lobby of the Senior Center, and at Town Hall.  Saturday, from 9 – 5, go to the Needham Public Library, where forty arrangements will be shown.  Sunday, the hours at the Needham Public Library will be from 1 – 4. Needham’s Art in Bloom was modeled after the annual springtime exhibit Art in Bloom presented by the Museum of Fine Arts, in Boston.  Beth Shalom Garden Club’s goal was to organize a community event that would engage people of all ages, interests, and life experiences. Each piece of mixed media artwork created by talented Needham High School students will have an accompanying floral interpretation produced by members of the award winning Beth Shalom Garden Club. Saturday, April 30, 12:00 noon – Grand Opening of the Emerald Necklace Visitor Center

Celebrate the grand opening of the Emerald Necklace Visitor Center at 125 The Fenway, Boston, on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1.  All events are free and open to the public.  At noon, Mayor Thomas M. Menino will cut the ribbon along with special guests.  From noon until 3:30, a very special Art in Bloom floral arrangement inspired by the Back Bay Fens will be on display, courtesy of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.  From 12:30 until 2, Gerry Wright will appear in his “other” persona, Frederick Law Olmsted, and the Park Rangers Mounted Unit “Adopt a Horse” program will be featured.  At 2, 2:30 and 3, there will be screenings of Stories from the Emerald Necklace, a documentary film depicting the variety of visitor stories found in the Necklace.  Also, between 12:30 and 1:15, artist Dustan Knight will talk about the creative process as Dustan works in watercolors to capture the special Art in Bloom floral arrangement on paper.

From 12:45 – 3 pm, you may meet the gardeners at the Fenway Victory Gardens and visit the newly renovated Special Needs Garden, as well as participate in hands-on workshops.  From 1 – 2:30, Alan Banks, Supervisory Park Ranger, will lead an interpretive walk through the Back Bay Fens beginning at the Visitor Center entitled “Garden in the Machine.”  For the athletes, join a fun run with 3, 5 and 7 mile options led by Mark Lowenstein, author of Great Runs in Boston, with a route starting at the Visitor Center, continuing along the Necklace out to Jamaica Pond, and returning to the Visitor Center, starting at 1:15 pm.

Over at the Wentworth Institute, Frederick Law Olmsted, a one-man play written by performed by Gerry Wright, will begin at 3 pm, followed by a short reception, and at 4:30, in the same venue, there will be a screening of The Olmsted Legacy: America’s Urban Parks documentary.  If you prefer, at 3 pm you may join Conservancy president Julie Crockford and City Councilor Mike Ross for a bike ride to Franklin park, and stay for the 4 pm Weeds as Feed walk led by a Franklin Park coalition naturalist.  For complete times and directions, log on to www.emeraldnecklace.org/visitorcentergrandopening/.

 

 

 

 

 


Saturday, April 30 – Monday, May 2 – Art in Bloom

Celebrate spring at this annual festival of fine art and fresh flowers on April 30–May 2! See the MFA’s galleries transformed by fifty extraordinary arrangements inspired by magnificent works of art. This year a highlight of Art in Bloom is the Art of the Americas collection, on display in its spectacular new wing.

Art in Bloom is free with Museum admission; no reservations are required to see the floral arrangements and participate in most of the programs listed below.

Family Day on Saturday, April 30, features storytelling, performances, and activities for children. On the evening of Sunday, May 1, there will be a special members-only viewing of the festival with dining, shopping, and spotlight tours in the galleries. On May 2 from 5 to 9 pm, the Museum throws open its doors to the greater Boston community for a free Monday evening Open House featuring entertainment, flowers, and art. Free gallery tours and floral demonstrations will be offered from Saturday through Monday, and Elegant Tea will be served on Saturday and Sunday afternoons (reservations required for Elegant Tea; call 617-369-4204).

This year’s special events include an illustrated lecture and floral demonstration—as well as a flower arranging master class—presented by the renowned Nancy Clarke, former chief floral designer, The White House. Mrs. Clarke has created thousands of beautiful decorations and floral designs for six American Presidents and First Ladies, their families, and international dignitaries. For 30 years she designed everything from simple bud vases for the First Lady’s nightstand to elaborate, formal arrangements for state dinners. Her floral designs and holiday decorations have delighted kings and queens, heads of state, members of Congress and journalists, as well as thousands of White House visitors. Art in Bloom at the Fitchburg Art Museum will take place Friday, April 15 (12 noon – 4 pm) and Saturday and Sunday, April 16 and 17 (11 am – 5 pm). Fourteen galleries house a diverse collection of American and European paintings, prints, drawings, ceramics and decorative arts as well as Greek, Roman, Asian and pre-Columbian antiquities. In addition, the Museum organizes temporary exhibitions of works from other museums, private collections, and emerging and established contemporary artists.
