  • Saturday, July 9, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – New England Society of Botanical Artists: The Art of the Woody Plant

    With 150 members, the New England Society of Botanical Artists brings a strong, artistic presence to the Arnold Arboretum this summer. Up to thirty works will be exhibited ranging from watercolor to pastel during The Art of the Woody Plant, running July 8 – September 11 in the Hunnewell Building, 125 Arborway in Boston. The Society has recently shown at the Brush Gallery in Lowell, Massachusetts, participated in the New England Flower Show, and includes many artists within the group who have received prestigious awards from the national organization— the American Society of Botanical Artists, as well as the British counterpart—The Society of Botanical Artists. The focus of this show, woody plants of New England, offers a unique, artistic interpretation of many of the plants included in the Arboretum’s collection. The New England Society of Botanical Artists last exhibited at the Arnold Arboretum in 2007, and now brings fresh faces and new art for our visitors to enjoy. A reception with the artists will take place Saturday, July 9 from 1 – 3. Art Shows are free and open to the public.

  • Wednesday, August 3, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – All Around Us: Paintings by Ricardo Maldonado

    When observing trees, change is a constant. The passing of the seasons, the weather, and the time of the day produce endless variations in light, shape, and color. Both subtle and abrupt, these changes challenge self-taught painter Ricardo Maldonado to embrace the shifting elements of the natural world, creating expressive yet wholly recognizable shapes that elicit unexpected emotions.  The paintings of Ricardo Maldonado will be exhibited in the Hunnewell Building at the Arnold Arboretum beginning July 30 through September 11, and a reception with the artist will take place Wednesday, August 3, from 6 – 8 in the Hunnewell Building Lecture Hall.  The event is free.  For more information, call 617-384-5209, or visit www.arboretum.harvard.edu/news-events/art-shows/.  Below is “Forest in Fall” found at www.redbubble.com.

  • Saturday, October 24, 1 – 3 pm – Botanica: Scanography by Marty Klein

    The Arnold Arboretum invites you to attend a reception with Artist Marty Klein on Saturday, October 24, from 1 – 3 pm in the Hunnewell Building Lecture Hall of the Arnold Arboretum.

    Marty Klein is fueled by an insatiable and wide-ranging curiosity to see familiar natural forms in new and refreshing ways. Using a flatbed scanner as a camera, Marty Klein captures images of plants and other natural objects with incredible depth and contrast. The images are very different from traditional photographs, yet remain close in spirit, imbued with an arresting vitality. Several new works in this show use specimens gathered by special permission from the Arboretum’s living collections.  The exhibition continues through December 15, 2009.

    Marty Klein holds a BA and a Master of Regional Planning from the University of Massachusetts, and over the years has worked as an artist, photographer, blacksmith, and land protection activist.  For more information, log on to www.arboretum.harvard.edu.

  • Saturday, September 5, 5 – 7 pm – The Lure of Trees

    Fruitlands Museum, at 102 Prospect Hill Road, Harvard, Massachusetts, is proud to present an exhibit by Artist-in-Residence Zsuzsanna Szegedi based on her season-long study of Fruitlands’ trees. For Szegedi, working on “The Lure of Trees” has provided a special opportunity to blend her European and American training in Fruitlands’ unique natural environment.

    Inspired by nature and our attachment to the land, her work steps beyond the straightforward representation of our environment and explores the complexity of our relationship to it.

    Hungarian-born artist Zsuzsanna Szegedi holds a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art. Her paintings can be regularly seen at the Copley Society of Art in Boston. She is the recipient of a Puffin Foundation artist grant and her latest paintings were sponsored by the Gamblin Artist Colors Co.
