  • Saturdays, July 26 and August 2, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm – Patterns from Nature

    The Arts and Crafts movement was noted for its nature-derived patterns.  Elaine Searle is your guide in this Wellesley College Botanic Gardens fun expansion of your art.  On the first Saturday, July 26, look at historical references and learn how to simplify a botanical form to make a pattern repeat.  Work up your unique pattern in between classes.  On the second Saturday, August 2, learn about restricted color palettes and use gouache paint (supplied) to work up your design.  Elaine will offer an email critique of your final work.  WCBG Friends – $225; non-members $280.  Register at 781-283-3094, or email wcbgfriends@wellesley.edu.

    The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc, and the Southeastern District present “Handwork” a standard flower show at the Barnstable County Fair,  Fair hours: July 16 -24 , 12:00 noon – 10:00 pm.  Cost: Fair Admission ($10 adult, $8 Seniors and Military, Children under 12 free).  The Barnstable County Fair has been an annual summer tradition on Cape Cod for 164 years.   • Sunday, May 23, 12:00 noon – 5:00 pm – Newton House Tour

    Eight private Newton homes located in several of Newton’s historic neighborhoods and villages will be open from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, including the 1732 Durant-Kenrick House (below) . The tour, sponsored by Historic Newton -  The Jackson Homestead and Museum, proudly celebrates 28 years of touring Newton’s homes.  Take the opportunity to view distinctive homes, unique additions, and inspiring interior and landscape design.  If you’re looking for renovation ideas or want to appreciate the beautiful work done in these homes, the House Tour is for you. Proceeds from the tour benefit Historic Newton and support programs and events at the Jackson Homestead and Museum, and the community.   • Thursday, December 10 – Sunday, December 13 – Christmas in Edgartown

    There are events all day and night throughout the weekend, with something for everyone. The colonial white homes and buildings of Edgartown make the perfect backdrop to classic holiday decorations that brighten up Main Street. Other cherished annual events include Donaroma’s Evening of Enchantment, the Festive Inn Tour and the Chowder Contest.

    Shoppers looking for unique gifts can visit the Handmade from the Heart Sale, the Holiday Arts and Crafts Show and the Elves Fair featuring rummage sale items. The Minnesingers, once again, cast their magical spell at the Whaling Church, as they perform Holiday favorites.

    Activities for kids include a treasure hunt and appearances by Santa. Local shops and other businesses greet visitors with cider, hot chocolate and treats. There are raffles, decorating workshops, and open houses at galleries, banks and realtors, as well as the Main Street inns.

  • Friday, October 9 – Sunday, October 11 – Warner Fall Foliage Festival

    The 62nd Annual Warner Fall Foliage Festival opens at 6 pm on Friday, October 9, continuing through 6 pm Sunday, October 11.  The Festival is Warner’s invitation to share the natural splendor of New Hampshire’s vibrant autumn colors while enjoying food, entertainment, arts and crafts along the main streets of Warner, located 18 miles northwest of Concord, exit 9 off Route 89.  The Festival is organized and operated by hundreds of local volunteers.  All money raised is spent on community projects.

    The Program includes open class corn competitions, The Moose Exhibit “Forever Locked – The Battling Bull Moose of Fowlertown,” arts and crafts farmer’s market, pie eating contests, music, parades, and the Granite State Cloggers.  For directions and more information, log on to www.wfff.org.

    Eight houses will be open from noon to 5 p.m., including an 1865 Mansard Victorian, four Colonial Revivals built between 1903 and 1925, and a 1920 Arts and Crafts house. The tour, sponsored by the Newton Historical Society, will take place in five historic neighborhoods.
