    Bug Hill Farm is a small, USDA certified organic farm and apiary in Ashfield, MA that demonstrates the success of permaculture techniques.  At Bug Hill Farm, Kate Kerivan cultivates a wide variety of crops, including raspberries, gooseberries, currants, wild and cultivated high-bush blueberries, alpine strawberries, native elderberry and elderflower, native Aronia, and honeyberries.  From the berry crops, wild harvested flowers, and locally produced raw honey and maple syrup, Kate crafts non-alcoholic cordials, shrubs (drinking vinegars.) sauces, and spreads.  Growing fields and an additional 38 acres of forest are managed for the health and well-being of native wildlife and plant communities, with particular emphasis on providing habitat for native pollinator insects.

    This season, Bug Hill Farm is embarking on a research project that will employ techniques of agroforestry and permaculture to expand berry production into marginal, forested areas of the property, while managing these areas for the overall health of local forest ecosystems.  The research will include small, experimental plantings of perennial woody berry plants that are common in transitional ecosystems into early-successional forest land in order to determine which cultivation methods will produce the best balance between environmental sustainability and cost of production.  The project’s main research objective is to examine changes in soil quality as a direct effect of experimental land management and cultivation techniques, namely maintaining land in an essentially arrested state of early-successional woodland and utilizing the high-carbon wast produced by such management practices in the construction of Hugelkultur beds.  Join Kate to learn more about this highly productive edible landscape.  $20 for Ecological Landscaping Association members, $25 for non-members.  Register by calling 617-436-5838 or register on line at https://www.eventville.com/catalog/eventregistration1.asp?eventid=1010470.

  • Saturday, September 25, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm – Traveling Landscape Design Clinic

    This fast-paced, information saturated clinic sponsored by the Berkshire Botanical Garden will be held at the homes of several of the workshop participants on Saturday, September 25, from 9 am – 5 pm. An active discussion format will focus on common design principles. Problem solving, conceptualizing a landscape master plan and understanding the design process are among the topics to be explored. All attendees will participate in the process of observing and designing. Should time permit, you will visit some of Walter’s projects completed or in-process. This field trip will be held rain or shine. If you would like your property to be one of the site visits, let BBG know. There will be a $40 charge for design visits which may last up to one hour.

    Walter Cudnohufsky is owner of Walter Cudnohufsky Associates Landscape Architects, Ashfield, Mass. He is the founder, and for twenty years the director, of the Conway School of Landscape Design. Mr. Cudnohufsky received his M.L.A. from Harvard Graduate School of Design and his firm has received numerous awards and Walter has been recognized as an outstanding educator.

  • Tuesday, October 12, 1:00 – 6:15 pm, and Wednesday, October 13, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm – Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts Tri-Refresher

    Come to Ashfield, Massachusetts Tuesday, October 12 and Wednesday, October 13 for a two day intensive course in the foothills of the Berkshires.  This course of study will explore Beaver Lodge, a residence designed by Marie Stella, who spoke to The Garden Club of the Back Bay in March, 2010.  This handsome laboratory setting will offer information on the promotion of sustainability, innovative use of native plant materials, construction of rain gardens, green roofs, and vegetated walls.  Rainwater harvesting and organic vegetable gardening will also be featured.  A “petting zoo” of green materials will help familiarize you with the latest products available.  Enjoy locavore gourmet meals and learn about Slow Food.  Beaver Lodge is Platinum LEED certified, the highest level of achievement designated by the US Green Building Council in Washington, DC, and the only such home in western Massachusetts.  Cost per person for the two day Tri-Refresher Workshop (Landscape Design, Gardening Studies School, and Environmental Studies) is $200 for eight hours of instruction.  Room and Board: Per night including breakfast (12 persons can be accommodated dormitory style at Beaver Lodge), $75.  Tuesday dinner and Wednesday lunch – organic local produce and products: $75.  Note: One group can stay overnight Tuesday and the other on Wednesday.  Total immersion is an integral part of the Beaver Lodge experience.  A list of items to bring will be mailed to participants, as well as directions.  To register, or for a copy of the complete schedule, contact Marie Stella, 719 Barnes Road, Shelburne Falls, MA by emailing marie@mariestellabeaverlodge.com.  You may also check her website at www.mariestellabeaverlodge.com.
