  • Wednesday, March 12, 7:00 pm – Eagle One: Raising Bald Eagles

    The Athol Bird & Nature Club will present Dianne Benson Davis, author of Eagle One:Raising Bald Eagles,  A Wildlife Memoir, on Wednesday, March 12 at 7 pm at the Miller’s River Environmental Center, 100 Main Street, Athol.   Dianne spent four months living alone as the caretaker for eight baby bald eagles in the remote Quabbin Reservoir area of Massachusetts as part of an ambitious and successful effort to reintroduce the endangered bald eagle to the skies of New England. Eagle One is the record of her time with the eagles, based on the letters and journals she kept there. It is the story of a woman’s life devoted to the care of wildlife: her nearly twenty year relationship with a red-tailed hawk, her experiences caring for a baby polar bear, tagging loggerhead sea turtles, and working with countless animals at the Tufts University Wildlife Clinic and the EcoTarium. It is also a personal memoir; the story of perseverance and struggle as a single mother, the joys of learning and teaching about wildlife, and of finding happiness and fulfillment in work and family.   • Thursday, February 20, 7:00 pm – Pollinator Gardens: The Beautiful Buzz

    Come to the Miller’s River Environmental Center on Thursday, February 20, for a special meeting when Christine Beckert Long, North Quabbin Garden Club president and graduate of the New Wild Flower Society’s Native Plants Studies program, will show us how our garden choices, both of plants and practices, can significantly encourage pollinators to get to work and make our gardens bloom and produce beautifully. This is a joint meeting of Athol Bird and Nature Club with the North Quabbin Garden Club. Free and open to all 7:00 PM at MREC 100 Main Street,  Athol.

    Join The Athol Bird & Nature Club as it welcomes back one of Massachusetts premier naturalist/educators Mark Lynch. He takes us on a journey through the natural world of Central Massachusetts on Wednesday, February 12. Mark’s deep knowledge of the natural world, great photos and good humor will make for a fun and interesting evening.   • Saturday, December 21, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Solstice Headlamp Hike

    A holiday celebration for hike lovers, this Athol Bird & Nature Club romp will be on the carriage width ski trails at Northfield. Our headlamps will light the way on this longest night of the year as we share solstice facts and quotes from literary lovers of the night. A visit to a mid-mountain campfire and shared cider and snacks will sweeten this night as we turn toward the sun. Participants should bring a headlamp, dress in layers for hiking in winter weather and expect to hike 1 ½ miles with an elevation gain of 300‘. If our trails are open for skiing, snowshoes are required. Free and suitable for ages 11 and older. Pre-registration required by calling 800-859-2960. Meet at the Northfield Mountain Recreation & Environmental Center.

  • Wednesday, October 9, 7:00 pm – River Otters: Their Lives & Significance

    Join the Athol Bird & Nature Club on Wednesday, October 9 beginning at 7 pm at the Miller’s River Environmental Center, 100 Main Street in Athol to hear Elizabeth Baldwin, assistant director of Biodiversity Works, a new non-profit on Martha’s Vineyard that focuses on wildlife research, monitoring and mentoring, will give a presentation on the natural history of river otters and touch on how we study them and why they can be a potential indicator of ecosystem health.  For more information visit www.atholbirdclub.org.

  • Wednesday, September 11, 7:00 pm – Willets at the Shore

    Join the Athol Bird & Nature Club on Wednesday, September 11 at 7 pm at the Millers River Environmental Center, 100 Main Street in Athol, for their regular meeting, when field biologist Ashley Green will describe her research into willets along the New Jersey shore, including the difficulty of recapturing banded birds, interpretations of the data, and other flora and fauna of a salt marsh. These remarkable birds nested along the entire Atlantic coast before 1800, but hunters and egg-gatherers reduced their numbers so drastically that by 1900 there were gone from Nova Scotia to New Jersey.   • Saturday, May 25, 7:00 am – Exploring Quabbin: Prescott Peninsula

    Visit the beautiful historic Mount Auburn Cemetery, a famous spring hotspot for migrating songbirds, with the Athol Bird & Nature Club on Saturday, April 27. Meet at the gate of the cemetery at 7:30 a.m. If time allows, you’ll also visit the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. Bring snacks or a lunch, and water.
