  • Friday, June 19 – Sunday, June 21 – The Newport Flower Show: American Beauty, Timeless Style

    New England’s premier flower show celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2015 with American Beauty-Timeless Style.  Long before it became home to the Newport Flower Show, Rosecliff was the birthplace of the American Beauty Rose. This iconic flower, which became a symbol of excellence, is the inspiration for our 20th anniversary. Join us to celebrate the classic and timeless style of the American Beauty.     Peter Hatch will be the featured special guest. Peter J. Hatch is a professional gardener and historian with 38 years experience in the restoration, care, and interpretation of historic landscapes. A celebrated author of four books on the gardens of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, where he served as Director of Gardens and Grounds for 35 years, Hatch has lectured in 36 states on Jefferson and the history of garden plants. Presently, he gardens and botanizes from his home on Lickinghole Creek in Crozet, Virginia, travels extensively to promote his latest work, A Rich Spot of Earth: Thomas Jefferson’s Revolutionary Garden at Monticello, and consults on the installation and maintenance of both public gardens and private estate landscapes.

  • Friday, June 21 – Sunday, June 23 – Newport Flower Show – Jade: Eastern Obsessions

    Discover the mysteries of the East.  Gardens, treasures, traditions, and native plants all blend to create the simple yet stunning beauty of this exotic part of the world.  The Newport Flower Show will take place June 21 – 23 at Rosecliff in Newport, Rhode Island, and Bartlett Tree Experts is the presenting sponsor, and supporting sponsors include Northern Trust, National Trust Insurance Services, LLC, Brooks Brothers, and Coca Cola.  Featured speakers will be Hitomi Gilliam and Harriet Henderson.  All proceeds benefit the preservation and restoration of the historic landscapes of The Preservation Society of Newport County.   • Thursday, April 5, 7:00 pm – Pruning Outdoor Trees and Shrubs

    Pruning is a practice that is periodically required on all woody landscape plants and a yearly pruning program helps to maintain the health, beauty and safety of plantings. Jack Kelly of Bartlett Tree Experts will discuss those techniques that are safe and reasonable for the home gardener to do as well as discussing when it’s time to call in an arborist for consultation and management of large or difficult specimens. The lecture, entitled Pruning Outdoor Trees and Shrubs, will take place at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s headquarters at Elm Bank in Wellesley on Thursday, April 5 beginning at 7 pm. The event is free but registration is recommended at www.masshort.org.

  • Friday, June 25 – Sunday, June 27 – Safari Flora & Fauna

    The 2010 Newport Flower Show will take place at Rosecliff from Friday, June 25 through Sunday, June 27.  Tickets may be purchased at www.newportmansions.org.  The Opening Night Cocktail Party will take place from 6 – 9 pm on Friday, although the show itself opens at 10:30 am that morning, closing at 5 pm to ready itself for the benefit gala.  Hours on Saturday and Sunday are 9 am – 5 pm.  Bartlett Tree Experts are the Presenting Sponsor.  All proceeds from the Newport Flower Show are dedicated to the ongoing restoration and maintenance of The Preservation Society of Newport County’s 88 acres of gardens and landscapes.

  • Tuesday, June 8, 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm – Wildlands and Woodlands Conservation Vision

    In 2005 scientists associated with the Harvard Forest published a report: “Wildlands and Woodlands: A Vision for the Forests of Massachusetts.” The authors called for a bold new land protection effort to stave off accelerating forest fragmentation. Join David Foster, director of the Harvard Forest (and Polly Hill Arboretum research associate) on Tuesday, June 8, from 7:30 – 9 at the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Hall, pictured below, for this special lecture.  Receive a copy of the report and learn more about the group’s latest publication, “A Wildland and Woodland Vision for the New England Landscape: Local Conservation, Biodiversity and the Global Environment.” This report recognizes the important role of the region’s forests and farmlands and puts forth a conservation and management proposal benefiting our local and global environments. Foster will discuss the direct relevance to conservation planning on Martha’s Vineyard. Bring your questions and concerns.
