    Come see hundreds of beautiful African violets and related plants on exhibit and for sale on April 25 and 26 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive in Boylston. Designs featuring blooming African violets and African violet blossoms will be on exhibit. Lectures and workshops are planned for each day.     Come to Tower Hill Botanic Garden on Saturday and Sunday, April 29 and 30, and enjoy a juried show put on by the Bay State African Violet Society. The Bay State African Violet Society was organized in 1959, as an affiliate of the African Violet Society of America (AVSA), the national organization for African Violet enthusiasts.   • Sunday, November 13, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm – Bay State African Violet Society Annual Re-potting Clinic

    Turn your lopsided, non-blooming, multi-crowned African Violet into an object of beauty on Sunday, November 13 from 11 – 3 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive in Boylston.  You bring the plants – the Society will provide new pots, fresh potting mix, and good advice.  $1 per pot.  Admission to Garden is separate.  For more information visit www.towerhillbg.org or call 508-869-6111, ext 124.

    The Bay State African Violet Society is having its annual African Violet Show and Plant Sale at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, Massachusetts on Saturday April 25th (10am – 5pm) and Sunday April 26th (10am – 4pm).

    A wide variety of African Violets in bloom, other Gesneriads and Design Exhibits will be on display indoors. Plants and growing supplies will be available for purchase.

    The show will be judged by officials from the African Violet Society of America. There will be lectures with demonstrations on how to grow and propagate African Violets.

    The Bay State African Violet Society puts on another spectacular show at Tower Hill Botanic Garden April 26 – 27 featuring America’s favorite houseplant, the African Violet (Saintpaulia sp.). All are welcome to enter their own plants and floral designs for judging to win ribbons and prizes. Participate in workshops on African Violet care. Start your own collection at the sale, where commercially grown plants and supplies are sold, along with plants grown by members.

    Saturday April 26, 2014

    Lecture Demonstration
    How to repot a violet: guidelines for when to repot, demonstration of how to repot, potting down a neck, removing old leaves and suckers. Propagation of African violets: how to leaf propagate, timetable for growth, and separating baby plantlets. This workshop will also include general care of African violets: identifying types, soil and fertilizer, watering, lights, schedule for repotting.

    3pm – Guided Walk-through of the Show
    Commentary on African violets, how they are judged, what denotes an award winning violet, discussion of the different sizes and types of violets; overview of the designs, including the hows and whys of flower design using African violets.

    Sunday April 27, 2014

    This Spring marks the Baystate African Violet Society’s 50th Anniversary. They will sponsor an AVSA-approved African violet show and plant sale. The show gives people an opportunity to enter their plants and floral designs for judging to win ribbons and prizes. You can also attend workshops on AV care. At the sale, commercially grown plants and supplies are sold, along with plants grown by our members. There is an $10 entrance fee to Tower Hill.   • Saturday, October 17, 10:30 am – Bay State African Violet Society Annual Meeting and Plant Sale

    The Annual Meeting of the Bay State African Violet Society will be held Saturday, October 17, beginning at 10:30 am at the Parish of St. Michael, Bedford, Massachusetts.  Following the plant sale, there will be a luncheon beginning at 12:30 with a guest speaker addressing members on special issues in cultivating African violets.  In addition, this year there will be a panel of experts to answer your questions.

    The Bay State African Violet Society was organized in 1959, as an affiliate of the African Violet Society of America (AVSA), the national organization for African Violet enthusiasts. BSAVS provides a forum for lovers of African violets to share their interest in the propagation and culture of these beautiful gesneriads.

    As a member, you will receive four issues of the Society’s official newsletter, Ye Bay Stater. You also become eligible to enter your plants and designs in our African violet shows, sanctioned by the African Violet Society of America.

    Activities include the annual Spring Flower Show and Sale; the annual Meeting in October with a program on AVs presented by a well-known speaker; and other activities such as potting clinics.  All offer the opportunity to socialize with and learn from other violet enthusiasts.  For more information, log on to www.baystateafricanviolet.org.
