On the eve of the Beacon Hill Garden Club’s 95th Hidden Gardens of Beacon Hill Annual Tour, 2024, celebrate the Club’s long tradition of urban gardening and hands on maintenance of civic properties. Kerry Ann Mendez is dedicated to teaching the art of low-maintenance perennial gardening and landscaping. As a garden designer, author, and lecturer, she focuses on time-saving gardening techniques, workhorse plants and sustainable practices. She has been featured on HGTV and in numerous magazines including Horticulture, Fine Gardening, Garden Gate and Better Homes & Gardens. Kerry Ann was awarded the 2014 Gold Medal from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, an honorary medal presented to those who have made significant contributions to the enjoyment and appreciation of plants and the environment. Stephen Byrns, who many will have enjoyed in his recent talks on the Untermyer Gardens given to The Garden Club of the Back Bay, The Beacon Hill Garden Club, and the Cambridge Plant & Garden Club, returns for a new online presentation on March 29, The Untermyer Gardens Winter Lecture on Samuel Untermyer: Forgotten Hero. Stephen has taken time this winter to do more research on Samuel Untermyer—his origins, incredible success, progressive activism during the last 30 years of his life, and especially his role in the Jewish community. He will present these findings, accompanied by many historic images, at the annual Winter Lecture, which will be delivered virtually on March 29th. This promises to be an in-depth look at the Garden’s founder, who was involved in many historic and signature moments of his time. At the conclusion, he will show select before and after images from a new book, Forgotten No More: The Restoration of Untermyer Gardens, which was undertaken on the occasion of Untermyer Gardens’ tenth anniversary last year and will be published next month.
The annual tour of the Hidden Gardens of Beacon Hill celebrates a long tradition of urban gardening. From its first garden tour in 1928 when the club was founded, members have opened their gardens on the third Thursday of May. This year, members of the Beacon Hill Garden Club are excited to bring our hidden gardens to you. Seven enchanting gardens will be featured in a film created this May.
