  • Thursday, June 27, 6:00 pm – The Iconic Trees of Newport: Past, Present, & Future

    Since 2022, beech leaf disease has been a deadly threat to some of Newport’s oldest, largest, and most iconic trees. And it’s not the only challenge faced by Newport’s diverse, amazing, but aging arboretum. On June 27 at 6 pm at Rosecliff, the Preservation Society of Newport County will host a gathering of experts to discuss what needs to be done to ensure a healthy future for trees in Newport. The Iconic Trees of Newport: Past, Present, & Future will explore the city’s landscape history, the cause and treatment of beech leaf disease, and strategies for planting to preserve the citywide treescape. Speakers include Joe Verstandig, Living Collections Manager for the Newport Tree Conservancy, John R. Tschirch, Architectural Historian, Jeff Curtis, Director of Gardens and Landscapes for the Preservation Society, and Jim Donahue, Curator of Historic Landscapes and Horticulture. Also speaking will be scientists from Bartlett Tree Experts, a Partner in Preservation working to save beech trees at the Newport Mansions.   • Sunday, May 21, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Collections Up Close: Magnificent Beeches

    The Fagus (beech) collection at the Arnold Arboretum comprises more than 100 individuals and has representatives from eight different species. It is an extremely rich collection with many specimens from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s as well as a number collected by E.H. Wilson. Witness the majestic outline, graceful branches, slender buds and beautiful leaves of the beech. Join us on Sunday, May 21 at 1 pm on the slope near the South Street Gate for a tour provided by Arboretum staff, chat with an Arboretum Interpreter about the differences between the American Beech and the European Beech, or participate in a family activity.   • Wednesday, June 18, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Colossal Cousins: Oaks and Beeches

    Wander among the mighty oaks and beeches at the Arnold Arboretum on Wednesday, June 18, at 6 pm, to learn about the Fagaceae, a cosmopolitan family of plants found around the world. Jim Gorman will present identification features, natural history, ecological contributions and economic uses, and horticultural firsts, introducing participants to North American natives, old guard species from Europe, and newer horticultural introductions from Asia.
