  • Thursday, June 22, 12:00 noon – Live Bee Hive Opening

    Meet The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History’s bees up close with beekeepers George Muhlebach and crew who will open their live hives for visitors. Learn how bees have a symbiotic relationship to flowering plants and how beekeepers contribute to maintaining the biodiversity in our ecosystem. Veils provided.

    PLEASE NOTE:
    The first opening is at 12 noon, if that fills, a 2nd is at 12:45 and if needed a 3rd opening at 1:30. We only take reservations for Noon until that is full, and then open the next time slot.

  • Saturday, April 26 OR Saturday, May 3, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Setting Up a Beehive

    Join beekeeper Jan Johnson for step-by-step instruction and demonstration on setting up a beehive, beginning indoors with a close-up look at how bees arrive for installation. This Berkshire Botanical Garden workshop will be conducted off-site, and registrants will be informed of the venue in advance. Safety equipment, how to stay protected, structural components, assembly and siting of the hive will be discussed. Jan will then demonstrate how to introduce bees into a new hive. Participants will be able to observe from a safe distance.

    This program is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 26 or May 3 at 2 pm. These dates are subject to weather conditions and bee delivery. Once you sign up for the workshop, we will keep you posted about the actual day the workshop will occur. It will take place on a weekend. A list of suggested safety equipment is listed below although these items are not mandatory. Protective gear should include a hat and face veil, long-sleeved shirt and pants (or bee suit) and protective boots. Gloves are helpful. Following the demonstration, Jan will be on hand to answer questions.

  • Saturday, May 7, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm – Hive Visit and Spring Management

    Please join the Northeast Organic Farming Association/Massachusetts Chapter for a Hive Visit and Spring Management morning on Saturday, May 7 beginning at 11 am at the Boston Nature Center, 500 Walk Hill Street in Mattapan. During this springtime apiary inspection, participants will have the opportunity to closely observe bees in their habitat. Jean Claude Bourrut will begin the workshop by opening hives to check on spring development. He will discuss bee life and activity within various hives (Top Bar, Nucleus, Langstroth eight and ten frames), hive management on a natural system, and hive splitting. Bring a veil and hive tool if you have them. Registration for those without veils will be limited to 7. Anyone with a veil (more up to date than the one pictured) may register. Cost: $25 NOFA members/ $30 Non-members. Jean-Claude Bourrut has been keeping honeybees for 20 years in urban and suburban settings.   • Saturday, April 9, 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm – Hive Installation and Spring Management

    This introductory workshop on Saturday, April 9,  from 4:30 – 6 pm at the Boston Nature Center, 500 Walk Hill Street in Mattapan, will cover honeybee hive installation as well as springtime management for a newly installed hive. There will be a live demonstation of installing a package of honeybees. Feeding, life cycle of the colony, hive expansion will also be covered. Cost: $25 NOFA members/ $30 Non-members. *PLEASE NOTE: To provide participants with a live hive installation demonstration, the workshop date might change depending on hive package delivery. Because of flexible date, payment will be collected at the event.
