  • Saturday, June 4, 10:00 a.m. – Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop

    The Shirley-Eustis House, a National Historic Landmark house museum and carriage house in Roxbury, Massachusetts is pleased to announce another fruit tree pruning workshop on Saturday, June 4, 2011.  As part of the Boston Orchard Program, The Shirley-Eustis House is partnering with Boston Natural Areas Network and The Food Project to bring you this free pruning workshop where you will learn how and when to make pruning cuts that will boost fruit production and improve the health of local trees. Ben Crouch, sole proprietor of Jamaica Plain’s Land of Plenty Gardens will provide information and hands-on demonstrations about pruning at the Shirley-Eustis House Orchards located at 33 Shirley Street in Roxbury.

    This free program, for everyone interested in learning more about protecting their trees, will begin at 10 a..m. Reservations are required by Thursday, June 2.   • Sunday, April 3, 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm – More Fruit Please! Expanding Your Home Harvest

    With proper planning and plant selection, fruiting trees and shrubs can be an attractive and low-maintenance option for growing food in the home landscape.  Former City Fruit program director for Earthworks Ben Crouch will provide basic tips and outline resources for planning, planting, tending and harvesting a home orchard at this Sunday, April 3 workshop at the Hunnewell Building at the Arnold Arboretum. Learn the particulars of growing blueberries, apples, pears, plums and other less common fruit.   • Thursday, October 8, 6 – 8 pm – Introduction to Fruiting Trees and Shrubs

    The Boston Gardeners’ Council will hold a workshop on Thursday, October 8, from 6 – 8 pm, at the Southwest Corridor Community Farm, Lamartine St. and Hoffman Street in Jamaica Plain.  Ben Crouch, former director of Earthworks City Fruit program, leads this workshop on planning, planting, tending, and harvesting urban orchards.  Free, but registration is required.  Call Boston Natural Areas Network at 617-542-7696, or email info@bostonnatural.org.
