  • Friday, December 4, 5:00 – 7:30 pm – Holiday Marketplace Cocktail Party

    The Berkshire Botanical Garden will host a Holiday Marketplace Preview Cocktail Party on Friday, December 4, from 5:00 – 7:30 pm.  This is your chance to do some early buying of handcrafted wreaths, holiday decorations, seasonal blooms and greens, herb products, crafts and gift items.  The Holiday Marketplace itself begins Saturday, December 5 and runs through Sunday, December 6, from 10:00 am – 5 pm.  This event is part of Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas celebration.  Admission on Saturday and Sunday is free, but there will be a charge for the Cocktail Party.  Call 413-298-3926 for details and reservations.

  • Saturday, November 21 – Berkshire Grown Holiday Farmers Markets

    There will be two Berkshire Grown Holiday Farmers Markets on Saturday, November 21.  The first will be held in Great Barrington at the old firehouse on Castle Street from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.  The second will be set up at the Williams College Field House on Latham Street in Williamstown, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.

    Berkshire Grown envisions a community where healthy farms define the open landscape, where a wide diversity of fresh, seasonal food and flowers continue to be readily available to everyone, and where we celebrate our agricultural bounty by buying from our neighboring family farms and savoring their distinctive Berkshire harvest.

  • Saturday, November 21, 10:30 – 12:30 pm – Specialty Perennials: Five Genera for the Shade

    Many excellent perennials thrive in the shade. A continuation of bloom with outstanding foliage is the dream of many gardeners. Exciting new cultivars will be featured including many rare forms of Polygonatum, Astilbe, Anemonella (below), Primula sieboldii and hardy Arisaema. This lecture at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts will focus on specialty perennials for the shade border. Learn from an expert propagator. Leo Blanchette is the owner and propagator of Blanchette Gardens in Carlisle, Massachusetts a nursery specializing in perennials. It features numerous rare and unusual varieties. He lectures through out the United States as well as in Canada and Japan. He was awarded the Silver Medal from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, the Bronze Medal from the American Rhododendron Society and he has been featured in national gardening magazines.  The lecture will take place Saturday, November 21 beginning at 10:30 am, and will cost $20 for BBG members and $25 for non-members.  For more information, log on to www.berkshirebotanical.org.

  • Saturday, November 21, 10 am – 3 pm – Wrapping Stones Japanese Style

    Participate in a hands on workshop at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts on Saturday, November 21 from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. It is mysterious, but basket makers and gardeners alike love and collect beautiful stones! We keep them in our studios, gardens and touch them often. Now you can learn to “wrap stones” and further that connection between stones and people. Using raffia, waxed line and cane, each participant will weave an open pattern over each stone. Start collecting! Put them on your windowsills, line your garden paths or give them as gifts. Nancy Moore Bess is a master basket maker and exhibits her baskets worldwide. She has championed Japanese basketry in the west and is the author of Bamboo in Japan. Her popular workshops always sell out. Bring a bagged lunch.   • Saturday, November 14, 12:30 – 2:30 pm – Taking Cuttings: Propagating Your Own Woody Plants

    Back at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts by popular demand! Join woody plant specialist Adam Wheeler of Broken Arrow Nursery on Saturday, November 14, from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm,  for a workshop focused on hardwood and evergreen propagation. This workshop will cover how to collect, prepare and propagate evergreens and other woody plants by cuttings. Set at the best time of the year for collecting, participants will learn techniques needed for insuring successful rooting. Cultivation requirements, timing and care of easily propagated varieties will be covered. Take home a selection of unusual deciduous and evergreen plant material in a simple propagator to grow on. Adam Wheeler is the Propagation and New Plant Development Manager for Broken Arrow Nursery located in Hamden, Ct. a specialty nursery with a focus on woody plants. He teaches wood plant propagation workshops throughout New England.   • Saturday, October 17, 1:00 – 3:00 pm – Backyard Beekeeping

    Consider keeping a beehive in your backyard for pollination in addition to collecting and harvesting your own honey supply. This discussion at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, on Saturday, October 17 from 1 – 3, will cover the basics of bees and beekeeping for the homeowner. Learn about the equipment, site selection, how to start a hive, maintenance, collection and storage of honey. Topics including bee diseases, health care and protection from predators will be covered. This class gives a realistic perspective for beginner and novice beekeepers. Learn how you can help save the bees! Dominic Palumbo owns Moon in the Pond Farm, a NOFA (Northeast Organic Farmers Association) certified organic farm in Sheffield, Mass. He produces organic eggs, meat, wool, yarn and honey.   • Saturday, September 26, 1 – 3 pm – Bring Nature into the Home: Build a Terrarium Garden

    Come to the Berkshire Botanical Garden in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts on Saturday, September 26, beginning at 1 pm, for this workshop, lecture and book signing with Tovah Martin. Learn about the whimsical yet practical world of gardening under glass – a way to bring nature indoors year round. When encased in glass, plants thrive with almost no help from out side their little enclosed world. This hands-on workshop will address the aesthetics and technical aspects of terrarium building. Plants, soil preparation, planting, container selection, design and maintenance will be covered. Participants will practice planting a glass terrarium with a selection of unique plants. A book signing of Tovah’s latest book The New Terrarium will follow the workshop. Tovah Martin is a horticulturist, writer and garden personality living in Northwest Ct. She writes for many horticultural publications and latest book is The New Terrarium published in 2009.   • July through September – Cocktails in Great Gardens of the Berkshires

    The Berkshire Botanical Garden has arranged for a series of Friday evening visits to spectacular private gardens featured in the new book, “Great Gardens of The Berkshires.” Enjoy this rare opportunity to roam these private spaces with the gardeners themselves while enjoying wine and hors d’oeuvres in the beautiful waning light of the summer day.
