    Capture colors and textures of autumn with this container garden floral design class with Betsy Williams at Tower Hill Botanic Garden on Septembver 19 at 10:15 am. Fill a 14″ pot with brilliant mums and asters, richly colored kales, variegated ivy, heucheras and other hardy plant material. With proper care your autumn container garden will brighten your doorway or patio until Thanksgiving. Plants in containers often make it through the winter if kept in a sheltered location and can be planted outdoors in the spring.

    All materials are included in this program. If you register as a pair you will receive ONE SET of supplies.

    Instructor Betsy Williams teaches, lectures and writes about living with herbs and flowers. A lifelong gardener, herb grower and cook, Betsy trained as a florist in Boston and England. She combines her floral, gardening and cooking skills with an extensive knowledge of history, plant lore and seasonal celebrations.   • Wednesday, July 28, 9:30 am – 11:30 am – Capture the Herbal Harvest

    Midsummer is herbal harvest time. On July 28 from 9:30 – 11:30 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, learn how, and when, to pick your culinary herbs and how to prepare them for drying or freezing. We will begin by harvesting fresh herbs from Tower Hill’s vegetable garden, then discuss classic, time tested ways to preserve the flavor and fragrance of kitchen herbs by enhancing commonly used condiments. Learn how to make a variety of herb vinegars, including fire cider vinegar, as well as herb butter and herb salt so you can enjoy the benefits and flavors of your favorite herbs all year round!

    Each student will make a quart of herb vinegar to take home and enjoy. Recipe sheets are included. Instructor Betsy Williams teaches, lectures and writes about living with herbs and flowers.   • Sunday, October 25, 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm – A Pumpkin Full of Flowers

    Join Betsy Williams of The Proper Season for a fascinating session at Tower Hill Botanic Garden on Sunday, October 25 beginning at 12:30 pm, entitled A Pumpkin Full of Flowers.  Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater may have kept his wife in a pumpkin shell, but you can fill your sugar pumpkin shell with beautiful fall flowers as a grand welcome to the harvest season and Halloween.  After you have hollowed out a pumpkin, you’ll fill it with colorful, long-lasting fall flowers, preserved leaves, grasses and berries. All materials are included. Please bring floral scissors and an apron to class, since pumpkin cleaning can be a messy job. This program will be held under our open sided outdoor canopy tent. If it is too cold indoors, we will retreat in one of our well-ventelated classrooms. Group size will not exceed current state restrictions (10).

    Spending more time cooking from home or enjoying your garden? Join beloved gardener, herb grower and cook, Betsy Williams and the Stevens-Coolidge Place to learn the secret to growing, using and preserving savory herbs to enhance your daily meals.

    During this new online offering, Betsy will explore the following topics in a 45-minute webinar presentation followed by a Q&A moderated by Trustees staff. On July 22 from 11 – noon, Betsy will discuss herb salts and sugars.

  • Wednesday, July 1, 10:30 am – 1:00 pm – Hummingbird Garden in a Container

    Experience the magic of watching a tiny, whirring hummingbird feed on flowers blooming close by! Plant a 14” container for your patio or garden the hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and other pollinators will love. With proper care, your Hummingbird Garden will bloom all summer. All materials are supplied: plants, container, soil and a bamboo frame for climbing vines.

    This July 1 Tower Hill Botanic Garden class will begin at 10:30 am at the Garden in Boylston and will be held in our outdoor classroom.

  • Wednesday, April 1, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm – Early Spring Container Garden – Postponed

    Plant a spring garden that can be grown indoors or enjoyed outside your door on nice days. Fill an attractive container with colorful spring-flowering plants: cyclamen, tulips, primroses, daffodils, violas or pansies accented with lacy ferns, trailing ivies and green moss. Your portable spring garden will look equally charming on a table, windowsill or doorstep. When summer arrives, plant the bulbs in your garden and move the violas, ferns and ivies to a dampish, shady spot to enjoy all summer. This Tower Hill Botanic Garden workshop will take place April 1 from 11 – 1, and is $80 for Tower Hill members, $85 for nonmembers. Fee includes materials. Register at www.towerhillbg.org.

  • Sunday, December 8, 12:00 noon – 2:30 pm – Boxwood Table Tree

    Tower Hill Botanic Garden will host a Boxwood Table Tree workshop with Betsy Williams on December 8 from noon – 2:30 at the Garden, 11 French Drive in Boylston. The stories, legends, fragrances and textures of our ancient and traditional Christmas greens come to life in this lovely 20″ table tree. Made with fresh boxwood, pine, juniper, rosemary, holly, ivy and bay, the finished tree “grows” out of an attractive pot. Decorate your tree with pine cones and berries. This is a beautiful tree! It will make the perfect centerpiece for your Christmas table. You will learn the Christmas stories of each of the greens as you work. Please bring hand clippers and an apron.     Betsy Williams and Tower Hill Botanic Garden present a flower arranging class on October 23 from 10:30 – 12:30 at Tower Hill, 11 French Drive in Boylston. Decorate your home with the beauty of fall flowers and the storied protective powers of the Herbs of Halloween. We’ll combine the vibrant hues of autumn flowers with accents of ancient Halloween magic to create a truly magical centerpiece. Make a long lasting, richly colored arrangement of glowing sunflowers, chrysanthemums, grains, garlic and a selection of Halloween’s most magical herbs and flowers. You’ll learn the stories and ancient magical uses of the flowers and herbs as you work. Please bring an apron and floral scissors to class.
