  • October Daffodil Planting on the Charles

    This autumn, the Charles River Conservancy will be planting bulbs along the banks of the Charles in Boston, Cambridge, and Watertown.  For the next month, every dollar you give will purchase one bulb that will help to brighten our Parklands next spring.

    If you’re unable to donate funds for the bulbs, help plant them!  Volunteer events will take place throughout October and November until the ground freezes.

    You can donate securely via their website, www.TheCharles.org.  Please specify BULB PLANTING in the “Comments” box.  If you prefer, you can also mail a donation to: Charles River Conservancy, 4 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA 02138.

  • Thursday, October 8, 6:30 – 8:00 pm – Snapshot of Galapagos

    The Galapagos Islands have always attracted the imagination of potential visitors for its landscapes, fauna and high number of endemic species.  A booming tourism industry coupled with a resident population explosion from mainland Ecuador has forced the World Conservation Union to include Galapagos in the World Heritage in Danger List.  In his recent trip to these islands (another tourist?), Eduardo del Solar spent considerable time with Galagueno educators interested in conservation and reform.  For this Thursday, October 8 presentation at Mass Audubon’s Boston Nature Center, 500 Walk Hill Street in Mattapan, beginning at 6 pm, he will use his photographs and the website he created to talk about issues that face this incredible site.  For more information, log on to www.massaudubon.org.

  • Wednesday, June 15 – Sunday, June 19, 2011: This Glorious Earth

    The World Association of Flower Arrangers announces that the United States of America is the host country of WAFA, responsible for  three years of floral activity.  The 10th World Flower Show will culminate in a four day event at the World Trade Center here in Boston, June 15 – June 19, 2011.   • Thursday, October 8, 6 – 8 pm – Introduction to Fruiting Trees and Shrubs

    The Boston Gardeners’ Council will hold a workshop on Thursday, October 8, from 6 – 8 pm, at the Southwest Corridor Community Farm, Lamartine St. and Hoffman Street in Jamaica Plain.  Ben Crouch, former director of Earthworks City Fruit program, leads this workshop on planning, planting, tending, and harvesting urban orchards.  Free, but registration is required.  Call Boston Natural Areas Network at 617-542-7696, or email info@bostonnatural.org.

  • Saturday, September 19, 2:00 – 3:30 pm – Modest Spaces: Mount Auburn’s Beautiful Public Lots

    Join Dee Morris, Social Historian, on a walking tour of Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Saturday, September 19, from 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm.  As Mount Auburn developed, it set aside four public lots containing single graves. Victorians of  modest means were then able to afford a final resting place in pleasant proximity to generous family lots. Named after Saints, these lots embraced such notables as Peter Banner, the architect of Boston’s Park St Church, Thomas Grundy, a hardworking brass finisher from Stoneham, and the genteel Austin sisters of Garden Street in Cambridge.  Join Dee on this late summer stroll to learn more about some of the fascinating individuals buried in these public lots. Meet at the Entrance Gate.  $5 charge for Friends of Mount Auburn, $10 for non-members.  For more information, you may call 617-547-7105, or email friends@mountauburn.org.     Join Mass Audubon volunteer Molly Edmonds on an early morning walk through the Boston Nature Center on Saturday, September 19, from 7:30 – 9:30 a.m., to discover and learn more about birds and birding. Binoculars will be provided, if needed.   • Wednesday, October 7, 6 – 8 pm – Lynden Miller in Boston

    Lynden Miller, well known NYC public garden designer, will speak about designing, maintaining, and funding beautiful, four-season plantings for public places on Wednesday, October 7, from 6 – 8 pm. Her garden projects in NYC have become urban oases with economic benefits and the power to transform the way people behave and feel about their city.

    Lynden Miller’s life-long work is creating beautiful gardens in challenging locations. She has been featured on the Martha Stewart Show and in Fine Gardening, Horticulture, and House Beautiful magazines. Her message about the fundamental necessity of healthy green spaces is critical for today; her new book documents the ‘how to’ of her success.   • Saturday, September 5, 5 – 7 pm – The Lure of Trees

    Fruitlands Museum, at 102 Prospect Hill Road, Harvard, Massachusetts, is proud to present an exhibit by Artist-in-Residence Zsuzsanna Szegedi based on her season-long study of Fruitlands’ trees. For Szegedi, working on “The Lure of Trees” has provided a special opportunity to blend her European and American training in Fruitlands’ unique natural environment.

    Inspired by nature and our attachment to the land, her work steps beyond the straightforward representation of our environment and explores the complexity of our relationship to it.

    Hungarian-born artist Zsuzsanna Szegedi holds a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art. Her paintings can be regularly seen at the Copley Society of Art in Boston. She is the recipient of a Puffin Foundation artist grant and her latest paintings were sponsored by the Gamblin Artist Colors Co.

    The Garden Club of the Back Bay is an institutional member of The College Club of Boston, and we are pleased to announce that the Club will hold A Fall Fashion Event featuring OKW of the South End (presenting women’s fashions) and Drinkwater’s of Cambridge presenting gentlemen’s fashions on Sunday, October 4, from 3 pm to 6 pm .     Boston’s newest park, the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway, is blooming thanks to careful organic maintenance by the park’s stewards, the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy.
