  • Saturday, August 13, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm – Build a Stone Trough Planter

    Learn how to make planters that look like old stone troughs out of a mixture called “Hypertufa”. In Europe, plants are often grown in stone troughs-ancient vessels once used for watering livestock. The craggy look of the hewn stone perfectly complements herbs, flowers and most especially rock garden and drought tolerant plants. Planting in troughs also raises the height of plants in the garden and segregates them from their larger neighbors. Learn how to design and produce unique Hypertufa troughs for your garden. Students will be guided through the process and will take home several troughs of their own creation. Debra Pope is an artisan working with Hypertufa medium to construct artistic custom troughs. Her troughs are sold throughout the northeast including Tower Hill Botanic Garden, Berkshire Botanical Garden and Stonecrop. Her popular workshops are offered at botanical gardens and for garden clubs in New England.  The workshop will be held Saturday, August 13, from 10 – noon at the Berkshire Botanical Garden, 5 West Stockbridge Road in Stockbridge, and costs $45 for BBG members, $50 non-members, plus a $15 materials fee.  For more information, log on to www.berkshirebotanical.org.   • Thursday, November 12, 10:00 am – Garden Design Luncheon at Blithewold Mansion

  • Tuesday, October 27, 7:00 – 8:30 pm – Improving The Older Garden

    One of the country’s top gardening professionals, Janet Macunovich, is coming to Wellesley this month.  If you’re looking for inspiration and practical, how-to advice on improving the look of your garden or landscape, you’ll want to come hear what Ms. Macunovich has to say.

    On Tuesday, October 27, the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association will present Ms. Macunovich’s talk on ‘Improving the Older Garden’.  It will be held at Elm Bank, the headquarters of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, in Wellesley.

    Ms. Macunovich is a noted professional gardener, author and educator recognized for her engaging how-to presentations, innovative hands-on workshops and down-to-earth writing and speaking style.  Her goal is to help people get more out of gardening and to better enjoy their landscapes.  To that end, she takes the mystery out of gardening and garden design. She replaces it with practicality and fun.

    Since 1990, Ms. Macunovich has written nine books and hundreds of how-to articles.  She uses experiences from her own gardens, clients’ gardens and a 5,000 square foot garden she designed and maintains at the Detroit Zoo where she is a 21-year veteran of that park’s Adopt-A-Garden program.  She has taught at Cranbrook House and Garden Auxiliary, Detroit Garden Center, Perennial Plant Association, and Matthaei Botanical Gardens.  Through sage observation and a deep well of experience, Ms. Macunovich offers gardening and landscaping advice that represents a specific, realistic approach for anyone who enjoys tending a garden.

    Her education in horticulture includes extensive coursework through botanical gardens, professional associations and universities. She is an Advanced Master Gardener through Michigan State University, and owner-operator since 1981 of the garden design and maintenance company Perennial Favorites. In Michigan, where she lives, she is known as “the lady with the flower house, the one with no lawn.”

  • Tuesday, October 20, 6:30 – 9:30 – Landscaping and Decorating with Bulbs

    Explore a variety of colorful bulb options you can plant now for a spring display for the mixed flower border or for indoor forcing. You will learn the secrets to growing bulbs outdoors, including when and how to plant, designing for color combination, and resources for quality bulbs. We’ll also explore options for bulbs in shady spots. We’ll go beyond tulips and daffodils to explore bulb varieties that will add interest to your garden, and expand the bulb blooming season with lasting color. Plan this fall for a colorful spring, and then just sit back and enjoy the show.  The class is sponsored by Brookline Adult and Community Education, costs $38, and is taught by Peter Medaglia, owner of Gold Medal Gardens, who traded-in a career in marketing to start his own landscape design and construction firm specializing in intimate urban and suburban gardens.     The Berkshires’ longest running and best-known community event will take place during the first weekend in October, October 3 – 4, from 10 – 5, at the Berkshire Botanical Gardens. An old fashioned, family-oriented community festival with something for everyone, including rides, games, food, music, crafts, giant tag sale, and lots more.   • Saturday, September 26, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – Pruning Shrubs and Small Trees

    Autumn is a great time to assess your woody plants for shape and structure. This demonstration/workshop, to be held at the Berkshire Botanical Gardens in Stockbridge, Massachusetts on Saturday, September 26, from 10 am – 1 pm, will focus on pruning, including: when, why and how to shape, renovate, train or rejuvenate your woody plants. Learn about pruning tools, timing, and specific techniques available to the home gardener. Participants will learn the basics of pruning, including rejuvenating an old lilac and shaping a small flowering tree. Pruning techniques specifically for hedges both evergreen and deciduous will be covered. Ken Gooch, Massachusetts Certified Arborist, is the Department of Environmental Management’s Forest Health Specialist for Berkshire County.   • Tuesday, July 14, 8 – 9:30 a.m. (and subsequent Tuesdays in July & August) – Yoga in the Garden

    Enjoy the sounds, colors and fragrances of the Heritage Museums gardens in Sandwich, Massachusetts, while you close your eyes, stretch your muscles and inhale deeply. Catherine Paulson will guide you through the practice of hatha yoga. Classes are suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners and are held in various locations throughout Heritage’s 100 acres of award-winning botanical gardens.  In the event of rain, the class will be held on the outdoor concert stage.  $15 per person, drop in registration.   • Thursday, July 9 – Saturday, July 11 – Antiques in the Gardens

    Antiques in the Gardens will return to Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay Harbor, Maine,  in an expanded format on Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11, with a gala preview party on Thursday evening, July 9. Dozens of selected members of the Maine Antiques Dealers Association will show and sell their finest wares. The Gala Preview Party will offer a first glimpse at the antiques show amid a delightful atmosphere and with superb food and drink. See below for the latest list of the exceptional featured caterers for the preview party.

    The Gala Preview Party from 5:00-8:00 p.m. includes wine, beer, and spirits from across Maine, along with delectable treats from Maine’s finest food purveyors; for example, Hartstone Inn, Treats, Sweetgrass Farm Winery & Distillery.

    Tickets to the Preview Party are $75 per person and must be purchased in advance, either by logging on to www.mainegardens.org or calling (207) 633-4333. Preview Party tickets include not only admission to the party on Thursday, July 9, but also admission to both the Gardens and show for Friday and Saturday.

    Admission to the show alone on Friday and Saturday is $12; admission to both the show and Gardens is $20. Tickets are available only at the door.
