Join Michael Wojtech, naturalist and writer, at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, Massachusetts on Saturday, March 24, from 1 – 4 for an indoor/outdoor exploration of bark, which is always visible, in any season. You will learn about a system for distinguishing bark characteristics and discover clues to bark ecology.   • Saturday, January 8, 9:30 am – 12:00 noon – Beyond the Traditional: Modern Mass Design

    Learn the elements of floral design in a fresh new way, with award winning designer Julie Lapham of Julie Lapham Designs at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, Massachusetts.  All experience levels are welcome, and all materials, including container, plant material, and mechanics, are provided.  On Saturday, January 8, from 9:30 – 12 noon, Julie will conduct a class in Modern Mass Design.  Create a mass design with strong groupings of colors and textures.  Registration deadline for this session is noon on Wednesday, January 5, so act right now.  $60 for Tower Hill members, $65 for nonmembers, and you may register on line at www.towerhillbg.org.

    Visit Tower Hill Botanic Gardens in Boylston, Massachusetts on Saturday, September 25 or Sunday, September 26 for the annual plant show sponsored by the Buxton Begonia Society and the New England Gesneriad Society.   The Gesneriad family consists of over 3,000 species and over 133 genera.  It was named after 16th century Swiss naturalist Konrad von Gesner.  Most Gesneriads are from tropical parts of the world.  Some of the most common plants in this genera are the Cupid’s Bower (Achimenes), Lipstick Plant (Aeschynanthus), Flame Violet (Episcia), Goldfish Plant (Nematanthus), African Violet (Saintpaulia), Florist Gloxinia (Sinningia – below), and Cape Primrose (Streptocarpus).
