    How can you tell different goldenrods apart? How can you use shape and scent to identify a plant? And what exactly is that aster in your backyard? Join Arnold Arboretum Horticulturist Brendan Keegan for a Native Wildflower Identification class to answer these questions and more, and find out which ones to plant in your garden along the way. This program takes place at the pollinator meadow at Weld Hill, a haven for native wildflowers at the Arboretum. The program is on Saturday, September 7 at 2 pm.   • Sunday, January 21, 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm – Great Horned Owl Walk

    Dusk in January is a perfect time to look and listen for Great Horned Owls, often heard calling throughout the Arnold Arboretum’s collections. Join Horticulturist Brendan Keegan and Zoo New England’s Matthew Kamm to hear about the owls’ breeding and nesting behavior, learn how to go owling ethically, and possibly hear and see a few owls as well.  The walk takes place on January 21 beginning at 4:30 pm.     Accessibility: Participants will walk over paved roads, woodchips paths, and mowed grass.

  • Tuesday, August 23, 3:30 pm – Tree Mob: Solar Array Pollinator Meadow, Live and Online

    Tree Mobs™ are interactions with scientists or other specialists at the Arnold Arboretum that provide another pathway to enjoy and learn in the landscape. Next Tuesday, August 23, we’ll hold our first ever hybrid Tree Mob in our landscape and live via Zoom. Join us at 3:30 pm.

    The solar array meadow at the Arboretum’s Weld Hill Research and Administration Building is now teaming with plant life and buzzing with pollinators. Join Arboretum Horticulturist Brendan Keegan to learn about the solar array and the native, wild-collected plants growing around it. To register for the Zoom, click here.   • Sunday, February 24, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Build a Better Birdhouse

    On Sunday, February 24 from 2 – 4 pm at the Hunnewell Building of the Arnold Arboretum, 125 The Arborway, learn how to build safe homes for native birds. This class, taught by Brendan Keegan, covers best practices for general bird house design using the Arboretum’s own nest boxes (for tree swallows, eastern bluebirds, black capped chickadees, and screech owls) as examples. You will learn tips for deterring predators and non-native competitors, as well as how to safely monitor young nestlings. Finally, you will build and take home your own “Chickadee Tube,” a design suitable for many Boston yards.
